Bucky Brooks Discusses Bucs’ Jameis Winston, Mike Evans and Dirk Koetter’s Offense By Jenna Laine Bucs/NFL Insider June 23, 2015 How Much Can Jameis Winston Grow With the Bucs Offense and Mike Evans? How Will the Defense Look in Lovie Smith’s Second Year?Bucky Brooks breaks down Bucs QB Jameis WinstonNFL.com and NFL Network analyst Bucky Brooks was on Sports Talk Live with Jenna Laine for a conversation regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and how much they can improve their 2-14 season, and specifically, how much they can improve with Jameis Winston at quarterback. He also talked about rookie left tackle Donovan Smith, what he expects out of Mike Evans in his second year in the league. He also talks about how Dirk Koetter’s offense how the defense will look in Lovie Smith’s second year with the team.A lot of people are eager to see what kind of jump Jameis Winston will make from minicamp to training camp. Right now he’s still splitting reps with Mike Glennon. From a front-office standpoint, from a coaching perspective, what are some of the things you’re looking for growth-wise when he comes back for training camp? “I think the big thing you’re looking for with young quarterbacks is their grasp of the offense. Does he understand what he’s supposed to do at the line of scrimmage during the pre-snap phase? Does he know where to go with the ball during on passing plays? Does he understand how to read the field — whether a ‘levels read,’ whether you go from deep to short, or a ‘pure progression read,’ where you’re going from right to left and left to right? I think for Jameis, Jameis is really experienced in playing in a pro-style system because he came from Florida State where they did some advanced-level concepts. Just how he assimilates into Dirk Koetter’s offense, how he understands how to take care of the ball and more importantly, does he play with the kind of decisiveness and confidence that he played with at Florida State? If he does those things as a rookie, he is well ahead of the curve and that will set him and the Bucs offense up for a lot of success.”Winston had that big target in Kelvin Benjamin at Florida State. Now he’s gonna get two of ‘em in Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. Really eager to see how he’s able to function with Evans but also too, how Evans is going to hopefully be able to elevate his game in year 2.“The one thing that he has the luxury of is he’s surrounded by talent on the outside. He has an established receiver in Vincent Jackson, Mike Evans made his mark last year, and also the tight end, Austin Seferian-Jenkins. So you’re talking about three big-bodied targets that he can find. And for Jameis, you give a young quarterback the opportunity to expand the strike-zone because those guys can make plays on the outside because they’re so long, they’re so rangy, they excel in jump balls — that helps your young quarterback. If they are able to develop a running game, that will really allow his game to go to the next level. Because now, you have the opportunity to go against one-on-one coverage on the outside, if Doug Martin or Charles Sims are able to command that eight-man box, and that allows a young quarterback to really be successful because now, you don’t have to worry about the exotic coverage that some quarterbacks will see if they don’t have that balanced running attack behind them.”Lavonte David, they’re hoping to get a new deal done for him. I know of course some of that’s going to be predicated on things like what type of deal Bobby Wagner is able to get done. What kind of value does Lavonte David bring to this team?“He brings a lot of value. He’s a key play maker. He’s at the weakside linebacker position that’s geared to make a lot of plays. He does that really in an underrated fashion. A lot of people on the national scene don’t necessarily appreciate his game but he’s a guy that’s very dynamic in the way that he plays… They’ll eventually get a deal done because they understand that he’s a key cog in that defense… They’ll find a way to get it done.”Hear Brooks’ insight below:audio link
