The Canales philosophy
Yet, came from a team and system that wasn't even close to that percentage.
It's almost as if...
As if what? I'm not sure I follow your point.
Something to do with Baker's limitations I assume
Don't be like Drunk Driver Esq.
You're better than that.
Let's look at it:
- We have a HC who pissed and moaned all offseason that we didn't run the ball nearly enough last year. That there needs to be an emphasis on it. There needs to be an identity to it.
- We have a HC who constantly talked and preached about the importance of not turning the ball over. Dictating the flow of the game. Making sure the defense was rested and not on the field all the time.
I mean, would you seriously suggest that Canales, who came from a system last year (that had one of the lower run rates on 1st down in the NFL...and one that currently isn't even remotely close to us regarding pass-pass-dropback rate), to ALL OF A SUDDEN doing the exact opposite?
You're crazy if you don't think Bowles has a BIG say in this offense.
Queipo and Ledyard have even suggested as such (numerous times).
which leads me to believe BM made his mind up presnap about where he wanted to go with the ball.
Speaking of having his mind made up presnap, check out Queipo’s tweet showing a play with Edmunds.

I just can't figure out why the playcaller can't make things easier and adjust for the QB?????
Yeah this is a presnap decision for sure. Ball is in the air pretty quick. No safety help... Baker played like ass for sure.
Not sure why he thinks our wr3 vs their cb1 is a good matchup.
logic is the first casualty of the Red Board.
the play is to Palmer. Mayfield is being criticized for going to the primary read but when that primary read (the play design) puts UDFA Palmer against a 1st round corner on a go …. That’s … not…. On…. The … OC … who called the play?
in this specific game we throw a screen into a zone defense, our RB gets blasted … it’s … not … the … play call
it’s … not… Canales calling a man beating play into a zone
Mayfield is supposed to NOT throw the screen and instead throw deep to the non-play side!

Ah Bowles... yes, I agree. He is in Baker's earn and Canales' ear for sure...
None of us know for certain who the first and second reads are but statistically I think it's safe to assume it's Evans and Godwin.
The play to Palmer does seem like read #1 but we cannot know for certain that Baker didn't check out of it or see the safety help shadowing elsewhere and decided to go there...
More than anything, I think it's silly to look at every play and say someone was open. Well yeah no shit... I'd hope if you run 4-6 routes and least 1 gets open... the question because:
1.) Can Baker go through his progressions that fast?
2.) Can the line keep the pocket clean that long?
3.) Can Baker create time in the pocket?
4.) What is the order of progression?
And none of us know... but if we go back to the play where Otton was open then let's look at it.
1.) Clearly he couldn't or didn't
2.) It did that play but his internal clock probably said it's too long
3.) He didn't need to
4.) I'd say Otton was probably last but none of us know
We all agree Baker played like ass this game and last... but where we don't agree is that he hasn't been good this season.
He's played like a top15 QB and the numbers back that up. Every QB leaves points on the board. Every play there's someone open.
It comes down to the coach and coordinator to put a player in a position to be successful.
Canales at times has done that. In the last 2 games he's done that LESS than he did the prior 6 weeks when our offense stared to click.

That wasn’t the case last season. That’s one of the main reasons it’s refreshing to see, but then frustrating when the QB can’t find them or throws poor passes when he does find them. That shouldn’t happen for NFL QB.

Again, this is only true because of the dreadful QB play in the NFL this season. I posted the list of shockingly dreadful starting QB’s a couple weeks ago. Yes, Mayfield is better than most of those jabronis. If you combine all of the injuries (Rodgers, Burrow, Cousins, etc.) with poor QB rooms (Atlanta, Washington, Pittsburgh, New England, Tennessee, etc.), there was a lot of shitty QB play this season.
And no, there isn’t someone open on every play across the NFL or Tampa in general. It’s not that easy in the NFL.
He’s actually top 10 in most categories so the top 15 includes adding the likes of injuries guys like Kirk cousin, Justin Herbert and Joe borrow etc
hes probably anywhere from 12 to 18
not winning a superbowl with him but then again this teams talent is….you guessed it….anywhere from 12 to 18
2023 draft had 3 QBs go in the first 4 picks. Bucs picked at 19th so QB wasn’t an option
trask hasn’t shown them any glimmer of hope in their previous 2 years together
baker mayfield came in on a prove it deal and exceeded expectations. Let’s face it most would have guessed he’d be benched by week 10
licht looks like a genius
Ah Bowles... yes, I agree. He is in Baker's earn and Canales' ear for sure...
And, keep in mind, I've made this comment numerous times throughout the season.

Fair point but we all agree Lefty was maybe the most overrated coordinator in NFL history.
He was hilariously bad...
But he's an outlier
Regardless of QB injuries... his stats look good. He'd be ranked lower, sure... but the stats look good. I'd say they look better than the actual eye test, which I'm sure you agree with...
Baker was also pretty dang clutch this year. He's a gamer but he will never be elite.
Heck I see Trevor Lawrence and I wonder if they are in the same camp?
While every pass play has a primary target, from what I have seen, Canales runs most of his passing plays with all targets live. I think the screens are really the only ones that are single target. There have been way too many pass plays when a receiver was open right in view of Mayfield and he wouldn't throw it, with most of these being in the 10-20 yard range in the middle of the field. He doesn't like to throw there as the interception opportunities are higher if the pass gets tipped up or goes through the receiver's hands. The one game that he did attack the middle of the field, he had an elite game in adjusted QBR and score a bunch of points. Godwin got the ball a lot and the ball kept moving down the field. Then he stopped doing that. It's just not in his wheelhouse. The play where he had Edmunds open in front of him, but locked onto Palmer, can't be excused. He locked onto the guy and never tried to look the coverage off, or look to see if somewhere else was a better throw. He's done this quite a lot this year.
As far as Canales running so much, I put that squarely on Bowles, as we're doing the same run it up the middle crap we did with Leftwhich. Doesn't mean Lefty's play calling outside of the runs didn't suck, as they did, but the running up the gut all the time is definitely a Todd thing.
