Wilson is about as franchise as it gets. The defense is great, but that shouldn't take away from what Wilson does. The Broncos shut down Lynch and held him to just 39 yards, but Wilson completed 75% of his passes for 2 TDs and zero turnovers. He also converted 2 important 3rd downs with his feet. The fact that he even got the Seahawks to the Superbowl with no #1 or #2 WR is pretty impressive.

The point should be made that Russell Wilson was pedestrian in most games and was not the reason the seahawks pounded the Broncos.  He had a great super bowl and is only in his second year so who knows where his ceiling is.  Focusing on anything other than defense in the NFL is fools play.  Complaining about a rookie that did as well as Glennon is even more foolish.  FOCUS ON AREAS OF NEED!!!!!

Yes and no. The QB is a very important piece of the puzzle. Focusing on ONLY defense is foolish period.

How would the Seahawks ever have beat the Saints in the playoffs without their "franchise" QB lighting up the Saints for 100 yards passing and zero TD's.I just don't see how they do it.....

Wilson didn't throw a TD in the Superbowl until it was already 29-0. I think he's a solid QB, but I wouldn't call him a franchise QB. He definitely wouldn't be able to carry a team with a crappy defense.

lolwut?

Right? Its impossible to say that they didn't need a franchise QB to win a SB, because they just had their franchise QB contribute to a SB victory.

I think people are confusing franchise with elite.I would guess Ryan is a franchise qb in ATL, but certainly not elite.

Wilson is a game manager right now. He may be the best game manager in the NFL - as he makes plays to extend drives - especially on third down. But anyone who believes Wilson is the reason they won the Super Bowl has no idea what they're talking about. He had two games all season where he threw for over 300 yds.  He only had 8 games where he threw multiple touchdown passes (Same amount as Mike Glennon, btw). He had six games where he was held under 200 yards passing (Glennon had 7). And for a mobile QB, he rushed for over 50 yards just 3 times and had 1 rushing touchdown.Elite? Great? Franchise? Not in my book. Seattle's superb defense and Beastmode are the primary reasons for their success.

Some people prefer their articles to be from unpaid high school kids like Leo Howell and Sanders Philptasky.

No, but I prefer them to make sense and add something.  Did Pat really just figure out that Lovie took a team to the SB with Rex Grossman? I don't care if the author was paid, unpaid, in high school, or in the retirement home.  People love to mock the amateurs (and personally I'm not a fan of Howell's at all), but sometimes the "pros" set a pretty low bar.

Wilson converted 5 of the first 7 3rd downs in the game, the offense scored 13 points, and didn't punt. Whether he threw a TD pass or not, he put a lot of pressure on Denver to keep up.

Seattle didn't need a franchise QB to win their Super Bowl. Glennon barring injuries and with some upgrades in coaches and on offense will have us in the playoffs very quickly.

Wilson is not a franchise QB? Dude. He's top 10 on most folks' lists.

As for the original topic, Rex Grossman was actually pretty good for a lot of 2006. He finished eight regular season games with a QB rating of 98.0 or better. That's really good. His bad games were of course beyond awful, but he was legitimately good a lot of that season.

I understand the argument and there's no doubt Seattle won the SB because they are a complete team, but I think you place a bit too much emphasis on the wrong bits of data. Some of those sub 300 yard games are pretty darn good - high completion %, high yards per attempt, with total yards low because the Seahawks had leads and just ran out the clock. And he's not a running QB, he's a mobile QB. 500+ yards is plenty. I wouldn't call him elite and great only because it's too early. But he's well on his way. Top 10 certainly. I think he makes too many big plays to be really called a game manager. It would be interesting to see what he could do with some bona fide receiving weapons.

That's a bit strong. He's been pretty much the same boom/bust guy most of his career. Big games followed by full-blown disasters. You can get through a season like that if the games line up right though.
