I like the hire. This meets what I was hoping for… someone out of the McVay or Shanahan tree.
In a way, Bowles' hands were tied. He had to hire someone who could work with Baker much like Leftwich was there because he was Brady's OC. Whereas Canales was Bowles' hire and owed his job to Bowles, Coen was hired because of Mayfield. Do we think he'd have been hired here if Mayfield wasn't coming back? He wouldn't have been on the radar. Mayfield goes from one year being relegated to career backup at best if not out of the league to a year later he's a critical piece so much so that the Bucs are hiring an OC to suit him.
Bowles hired Canales because he was impressed with him. Was he as impressed with Coen, or was Coen the one who checked the boxes? What's the point? I guess its just that there could be a different dynamic this year than there was last year.
Coen was the guy that came up with and installed the gameplan for Baker in his first game as a Ram last season. I think he left back for Kentucky right after the game. In the post-game presser, Baker gave him credit for helping him get up to speed as quickly as he did.
He's a better hire than Canales was and a better hire than AVP who has been stagnated by Stefanski who up until this season was as adept at blowing games as well as winning them
I saw him play at Pitt, watched him in Buffalo and then in Cleveland... he's been mediocre at every stop
