Canales is a class act. Calls out all his coaching influences, gives credit to his staff and the players

There is almost ZERO patience in the NFL these days.  Kudos to Canales and Bowles for sticking with their belief in RUNNING the ball even when it was struggling.  Its paying  DIVIDENDS now:

" . . .in the last five weeks the Bucs have had three 100-yard rushing days, in addition to a 99-yard outing at Green Bay. Tampa Bay has averaged 114 yards per game over the last five weeks, in which the team has a 4-1 record. That average over the last five games would place the Bucs’ ground game in the Top 13 during that span.

Because of the improved run game, Tampa Bay’s offense has become more balanced and less predictable, and scoring is up as a result. The Bucs have scored no fewer than 20 points in any of the last five games and are averaging 26.8 points per game over that span."

The current average of 26.8 per game puts them near the top of the league in offense jusrt as we enter the critical playoff run.

"Percentage of Mike Evan's routes that are go routes:

2022: 30% (highest mark of his career)

2023: 19% (lowest mark of his career)

Turns out it helps when you let a strong route runner run more than go routes"

- Timo Riske per Twitter

Looks like our zone beating, man beating "not a real #1 receiver who the offense doesn't flow through" has benefitted from...checks note...a competent OC who actually utilizes his strengths.

Weird...

More head coach talk . .  ugh

"Canales spent 13 seasons with Pete Carroll and has some Carroll-like qualities when it comes to optimism and energy. His track record with quarterbacks is strong, helping bring out the best in Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and now Mayfield. While some candidates like this might be a year or two away, this field is wide open, and sometimes teams want to get ahead on a skilled offensive guy before they reach full potential."

This could just as easily be Tony Dungy speaking soon after he was hired by the Bucs:

“The consistent part of it is, ‘You don’t change. You continue to be about the fundamentals, about the ball, about eliminating those pre-snap penalties. About all the simple basic things.’”

"How basic did it get for Canales? He admitted his goal was not to stack wins but to stack practices. Have a good practice on Wednesday. Follow that up with a good practice on Thursday. Good practices should lead to better play on gamedays. That’s how basic Canales got."

That is/was the Dungy philosophy.  As the team stacked up losses, he just told them the wins were coming, focused on fundamentals . . .

one reason Canales is alreadyin the HC discussions

Canales in trouble in Carolina.  Some of it is the defense, but thought this was interesting because it was offered as a predictable "fix"

1. Get more aggressive with the play calling

"As for Canales, he arrived in Charlotte with the reputation as a quarterback whisperer following his work with Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield. But he only had one year of previous play-calling experience, and too often he looks like he’s afraid to take chances."

and offered this example from the Pats game (note the reference to "scripted"):

"Canales’ scripted first series at New England produced a touchdown. Leading 6-0, the Panthers were driving again on their second possession before facing a third-and-10 from the Patriots’ 43. Canales called a draw for Rico Dowdle, who picked up 2 yards. The Panthers punted in Patriots’ territory and Marcus Jones returned it 87 yards for a touchdown, the first of 42 consecutive points for New England."

 . . .

“Thought we had an advantage in some of the fronts we were getting. Thought we had a clean look right there to try to steal some yards, potentially get us into a four-down situation where we can keep the drive going and try to get a touchdown out of it,” Canales said. “So we were kind of in that zone. The run did not work out.”

It didn’t work out when Canales did the same thing later in the game, with the same result: A 2-yard gain on a Dowdle draw on third-and-15 with the Panthers trailing 21-6. Again, the Panthers punted, and again Jones had a huge return (61 yards) that helped put the game out of reach.

I think Waldron is with the jags? passing game coordinator?

Carroll's Raiders drafted RB 1st and have taken their run percentage from 35% to 43% . .  while losing
