Spytek on the Bucs radio last week:

"“Obviously, I think there’s a bunch of great quarterbacks in the draft this year. We’ve won far too many games picking 26th now to factor into that,” Spytek said. “There’s a bunch of really good receivers, which I know how much everybody loves receivers, but again, picking 26th makes it hard. I mean, if anybody has any good ideas out there about how we can get up to [pick No.] 6 or 7, we might have a shot at some of them. But they’re just too good.

He mentions QBs and Receivers.

Hmmm

I mean the Bucs do have contingency plans in place if they need to reload the offense because free agency goes sideways.

Draft picks I’m ok with but trading stud proven players to potentially pick a Bryce young or Daniel jones, yikes. Could set us back big time.

it would take like an AWJ or Vita Vea to move up that high and we best be getting a Joe burrow if you’re going to do that.

No thank you. Not worth the risk

So the key piece of con text missing (because I didnt hear the interview) is whether the statement above is from an answer to a question? Or, if he threw it out there?

Evans saying yesterday he was excited to see where he ends up. I think he was in TX.

Lots of posturing.

Agree but i think one of the examples that blows up the Trask stuff from last year is KC and the way they got Mahomes when they already had Smith.

Obviously that worked out great and there are many examples of the disastrous opposite outcome.  But, the ultimate truth in the NFL is that you build successful teams and win Super Bowls by DRAFTING well.  All the more so given the current rookie contract structures.

We won pur most recent SB by getting Brady, which was an infusion of immense talent but also incredible LEADERSHIP. But, its not like those players that were here before Brady were all chumps.  They had the talent to win WITH THE RIGHT LEADERSHIP and a few key pieces.

Drafting well is STILL the #1 way to build a team and the true way to build a dynasty is around the very elusive concept of a franchise QB

I would think so.

Something has to give.  Maybe that is Godwin restructuring his deal, but it could also be moving on from him to keep Evans.  This was the "dilemma" SR discussed a few times.

I think one thing they may have learned this season is that Godwin might struggle a bit as a true outside receiver (early in the season) as compared to his more traditional slot role (later in the season).  We have two complementary receivers, so which is easier to replace? Evans should be slowing down, but he showed he can expand his routes in a Canales-style offense.  Still need a complement though, so there is there dilemma.

a first for Godwin?

Tyreek Hill was traded back in 2022 for a first round pick, a second round pick, a fourth, and a subsequent year 4th and 6th.

Davante Adams was traded back in 2022 for a first and second round pick.

Amari Cooper was traded back in 2022 for a 5th round pick.

Chase Claypool was traded for a 6th round pick

Brandin Cooks was traded for a 5th and 6th round pick

DJ Moore was traded to move up from 9th to 1 with also having to give up another 1st and 2 seconds; so who knows what that equates too in terms of above

Calvin Ridley was traded for a 3rd and a 5th round pick

AJ Brown traded for a 1st and 3rd

i think we can all agree that Godwin is not in the Hill and Adams category and likely closer to the Cooper/Ridley category.

i like Godwin and trading him would leave a hole for our #2.  It's likely Bucs will extend Evans and with Godwin just having one year left, they will have to make a decision.  it's likely in the Bucs best interest to extend Godwin given he has a cap number of $18.8M in 2025 without being on the roster.  However, if we can get a first for Godwin it's something they may consider.  I'd rather have Godwin because he will keep us competitive and one of the best #2 WR in the league.

I dont think his value is a one though.  He's likely a third or maybe a second and i rather have Godwin.

Think i read the compensation was from New England, and they'd send a first (assuming in 2025) as well as an un-named CB (don't remember the name was mentioned in what I read) in exchange for Godwin.  If that's the case I'd personally jump on it provided it takes place post June 1st as that would free up 20 mil with 7 in dead cap, where if pre June first opens up 3 mil with 26 mil in dead cap.  Godwin is a good #2 but he's lost a lot of explosiveness after that nasty knee injury a few years ago, and given the dead cap that he'll carry next year for me makes it a no brainer.  I'd like to have Godwin back beyond 2024 ( but minus the 18 mil dead cap, and certainly at a considerably lower rate than he's making now )  I mentioned in another post that Godwin is our highest salaried player on the roster, and in the playoffs where his numbers should have reflected that he had 8 catches for 85 yards and a TD at a 75% catch rate, Evans also had a 75% catch rate but hauled in 11 catches for 195 yards and a TD, and Palmer had I think a 75% catch rate hauling in 3 passes for 88 yards and a TD.  If we do move on from Godwin this offseason let Palmer slide into #2 and draft a replacement for Godwin early incase Palmer is better suited for the 3rd WR spot.  That extra 20 mil and a CB also opens up e door for Tampa to possibly move on from CD3 opening up almost 40 mil between the 2 moves for Tampa to spend on an Allen, or Burns type Edge to pair with YaYa, as well as more flexibility in the draft.

Godwin isn't worth a one.  He's only got a year on a big contract and he's slowing down. He's been a great player for the Bucs, but he's taken a beating during that time.  He may have a few years left if he avoids another major injury, but his production will gradually decrease from year to year.    I just don't see any team wanting to give up a high pick to take on a one year $20 mil contract, because they won't want to give him an extension at the pay level he's accustomed to.
