I rather not pay a guy 20mil for less than 10 sacks, Mack isn't the guy thats gonna take us over the top, I rather start Diaby and robert ayers kinda player in free agency like Judon, a guy we were thinking about. Falcons totally misused him putting him in coverage half the time
Judon can be used in coverage so that isn't really a misuse and that is what Bowles like to do too. But Judon opposite of Diaby and the Bucs draft an edge rusher in round 1 and the Bucs edge situation changes dramatically for the better.
what i mean is, cant have one of your best pass rushers not rushing the passer. Falcons put him in coverage way more than he needed to
Out of our last three first-round picks, two did not perform well enough to earn a second contract. How do we address first-round misses like this? Should we simply acknowledge our mistakes and aim for better selections in the next draft? Or to avoid a decline in performance, should we fill that gap with a free agent?
I strongly believe in primarily building through the draft, but when we miss on first-rounders, it’s crucial to offset that lost potential by bringing in a top-tier free agent—essentially treating it like a successful draft pick. Let’s make up for those missteps. Instead of signing a 34-year-old, let’s target a young edge rusher in their prime.
"Tampa Bay desperately wants Chris Godwin back. After suffering a serious injury last year leaving his availability at the start of the season in question, I was expecting a one year “prove it” deal for Godwin. But I’m told there is a competitive market for his services and he’ll get a multi-year deal with some guaranteed money. And he’s likely to get it from Tampa, which really wants him back. They love Godwin and so does Baker"
We don't know his recovery time. That's the big variable. A two-year deal would suck if Godwin spent a good chunk of the first year getting back up to speed like he did last time. No fault of his, that's just how long it took. We've heard what a professional Godwin is and how hard he works on his rehab. What we haven't heard is any level of confidence of him being ready for the season or any time frame at all for that matter. No news is bad news IMO, because if he was going to be ready for the season his agent should be shouting that from the mountaintops."Tampa Bay desperately wants Chris Godwin back. not sure why you are dying on this sword? Godwin got hurt in week 7 last year. He got hurt in week 15 in 2021 and was back for week 1 the next season.
would think even if we ease him back with reps to start the year, having Godwin at full force for 2nd half run/playoffs is well worth it.
Without Godwin, this team isn't nearly as scary
He wasn't full speed for most of that season. Every injury is different, so for all I know he'll be healthy as a horse. But I just find it odd. Godwin's agent should be drumming up interest in his client. If he was expected to be ready by the end of training camp, you'd think that would be information to be shared any interested parties and he would leak to the press. We don't know his recovery time. It's probably all much ado about nothing and he'll be signed before it becomes open season like everyone says he will. But cap wise it would really behoove the Bucs to get a deal done before all the void money becomes due. If they can't get it done before the bargaining period opens, then you have to think he's probably going elsewhere.
Going to switch gears real quick rather than create a new thread....Joey Bosa IS the defense changer we need...Yes he'll be expensive but he's also 29 and I'd rather the money go to a younger proven producer than go to an aging Mack, Hutchinson, Maxx Crosby if he hadn't been extended, or any other available "name FA" . I believe we can secure both Bosa and Godwin

Not sure why you keep saying that because its not like we are in the complete darkness. More IMPORTANTLY though, the Bucs are not even close to being in the dark and they are the ones doing the negotiating.
Even just for the fans, we all know when he was hurt. We know he suffered a "grade 1" dislocation (ie the least severe). We can see multiple NFL players and their timelines for similar injuries. For example, I previously described Prescott's return form a much more severe injury.
And recall, initially he was working to get back for the playoffs, so you're talking about a full offseason for one of the most dedicated training guys in the NFL.
Not worried at all about Godwin getting back fully healthy. Recovery from an ACL tear in week 15 vs a grade 1 dislocation in week 7 are not even close. Plus we know how hard of a worker he is.
I'll take either Mack or Bosa. Bosa's injury history scares me a bit. I don't think either guy is going to command a massive salary.

I dont think it works the way you are describing.
Godwin is going to give the Bucs every chance to reach a deal with him. Every chance. It might not work out BUT simple experience says the Bucs have the inside track. Last season, Mayfield was going to leave or break the Bucs bank account (he did neither) and Evans was going to leave (he did not).
So the Bucs have to be the HEAVY favorite to keep him and certainly best positioned to make a FULLY INFORMED decision on his health and contract . . because he's in their building every day. They have been with him every day since his injury and he is a LEADER on the team, very close to Bowles etc. Both sides KNOW his recovery status.
And BOTH SIDES want a deal so we are a long way from agents and "leaks to the press" because it just not that type of situation. I am not sure Godwin's agent needs to drum up interest in him anyway, but even if you accept that characterization the agent wouldn't be doing so through "the press." I think Godwin is represented by CAA, one of the biggest agencies, so they are in regular communication with all of the teams.
Anyway, it is still a marketplace and $$ is important so its possible Godwin leaves, but maybe it is NOT the case that our current lack of insight as fans translates into "something is wrong."
Both sides KNOW it, but why don't we? Why isn't Godwin coming out and saying "I'll be good to go Week 1!" Back when he was injured they thought he MIGHT BE BACK FOR THE PLAYOFFS. Now when Stroud comes on to TKraz he can't give any information. I'm just trying to point out that there is no reason anybody should be keeping anything information wraps - unless the news isn't good. Then the Bucs aren't going to say anything and neither is the Godwin camp. We never heard a whole lot about Ryan Jensen's injury for a long time because there was never any good news to report. Nobody wanted to say anything bad. I hope this isn't the same type of deal.Godwin's agent should be drumming up interest in his client. If he was expected to be ready by the end of training camp, you'd think that would be information to be shared any interested parties and he would leak to the press.

Joey Bosa IS the defense changer we need..
14 sacks over the past 3 seasons while missing 22 games, and still most likely wanting a contract in the $20M per range.
Hard. Pass.
Let him go play with his brother. At least until Week 5 when he goes on IR.
@donkey_hunter Agreed. Not enough of a difference maker. Not going into another season with guys we’re hoping will outplay their past few seasons.
Agree. Stay away from the injury prone free agents.Joey Bosa IS the defense changer we need..

I see what you did there.
