When it comes time, Licht will pay Mayfield what he's worth. It's going to put pressure somewhere else.
Yes I agree.
One thing (of several) that Licht seems to be doing right is that he keeps drafting and retaining good players. At least under the current CBA those productive draft picks are big
Need in having good players when all hands on deck for playoffs.

"You know, right now, I’m under contract through 2026,” Mayfield said. “So it was really just about getting guaranteed money for 2026, and they did that. And that’s all I can ask for. I signed the contract and knew what it was. You know, right now it’s winning. I know good things will happen after that. But I trust this place. I love being here. Obviously, [I’m] used to bouncing around. I’ve done that before, but I don’t want to leave.”
No skin off the Bucs nose since it would be inconceivable to move on from Mayfield in 2026. Mayfield will hit the cap for $49 mil in 2026 - no small amount and it will never have a lower cap hit. I don't think Licht will backload the next contract. Now that there is certainty for 2026 this sets the stage for an extension next offseason, but both sides are already are getting out their calculators to figure out where they'll go from there. It will only be going up.Culture:

Thats what makes it a perfect move and you can see Baker's reaction. "I love this place." "I never want to leave."
Licht has come a long way and right now the team is in great shape in term of the way you would want to build and maintain an NFL franchise.
Mayfield will hit the cap for $49 mil in 2026 - no small amount and it will never have a lower cap hit.
I’ll bet you $1,000 it will.

How do you plan on settling up?
I prefer cash.
I'll go one dollar. You do realize there already is $9.375 mil that will hit the cap in both 2027 and 2028 deferred from the current deal.Mayfield will hit the cap for $49 mil in 2026 - no small amount and it will never have a lower cap hit.

But in general I think that Licht has spaced out the big money players pretty well. Next up is Goedeke, McCollum and possibly Hall in 2026. Mayfield, Vea, Mauch, Dennis 2027. Winfield, Kancey, McMillan, Smith 2028 and so forth.
It's nicely spaced out. I don't think Licht is going to go "all in" on any particular year and blow things later. He's going to continue to be consistent, and so no reason to try to heavily backload the next Mayfield deal IMO.
I'll go one dollar.
Good move. But, I'll still take your dollar.
You claimed:
Mayfield will hit the cap for $49 mil in 2026 - no small amount and it will never have a lower cap hit.
Guess what?
It's already lower, bud bud.
His cap hit for 2026 is $38.9M.
So much for it never being lower.
Again, thanks for the $1
You do realize there already is $9.375 mil that will hit the cap in both 2027 and 2028 deferred from the current deal.
You do realize that there's a $30M dead cap hit that comes due in 2027.
Assuming they sign him to a new deal, that will have to be prorated between 2027 - 2029.
Let's say they do this at the tick of 40%, 40%, 20%.
If he's in the neighborhood that I projected (4yr - $200M w/ $100M guaranteed), they'll convert the majority of the first year salary into a signing bonus and prorate it across the life of the deal. Not factoring in void years (assuming even and proportionate cash flow).
Barring any changes between now and then, his cap hit will be less in 2027 than it will be in 2026. My guess is between $10M - $12M less, depending on how we look as a contender.
If you'd like, I'll give you a chance to earn back that dollar. Wanna bet?
I didn't say the cap hit would be exactly the same every year, but they won't be wildly different. And I think your numbers are low. He'll get more than Purdy who got five years 265 with 182 guaranteed. But the first couple years of Purdy's cap are relatively low and then balloons to over $70 mil later on. I don't think Licht will put the Bucs future in a bind like that. I think he'll be more balanced than Purdy.I'll go one dollar.

Actually, you said his cap hit was $49M in 2026 and that it "would never be lower".
Per usual, you were wrong.
But the first couple years of Purdy's cap are relatively low and then balloons to over $70 mil later on.
Purdy will never see a season where his cap number hits $70M. It'll get restructured before the 2029 season, if not sooner.
He'll get more than Purdy who got five years 265 with 182 guaranteed.
No, he won't.

How am I wrong about something that hasn't happened yet? Baker's numbers will never be lower than $49 mil cap hit after 2026. He already has almost $10 mil deferred money that will be hitting the cap. So you are saying that he'll have less than $31 mil cap hit in the first year of his new contract. There's only so much that restructuring can do. You can end up with a lot of dead money you are paying to guys who aren't playing for you anymore. Licht will do that to a greater or lesser extent, but I think more toward the lesser side going forward. We went through some hard times in the post-Brady year because of dead cap money. There will always be some dead money, but I think Licht is not going to do again to the levvel that he did during the Brady era. Going forward he's going to try to be more balanced. Just what I think. We'll see.

Because you keep saying his 2026 cap hit is $49M and it’s not.
