Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Can the secondary contain a No. 1 WR? by Jose Martinez 1h ago Last Sunday felt like a wake-up call. This season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense has been lucky when it comes to opposing quarterbacks. They played rookie Marcus Mariota, Drew Brees, who battled through a rotator cuff injury for a majority of the game, and Ryan Mallett.Failing to capitalize on these opportunities is another story, but there is something else that gave me pause. Have you seen how poor the Buccaneers have been against a team’s No. 1 wide receiver? A somewhat shocking realization when you consider that the Bucs give up the ninth-lowest passing yards per game (210.3).In Week 1, the Titans’ Kendall Wright caught four passes for 101 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown where he gashed the defense right down the middle. Last weekend, DeAndre Hopkins was a terror on the Bucs, amassing eight receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown. It’s hard to say which Saints wideout would be considered their No. 1, but Brandin Cooks and Marques Colston combined for nine catches and 131 yards. And that came against Brees who, as previously mentioned, was less than 100 percent.Down the road, the Buccaneers will face the Falcons, Giants, Cowboys, Colts and Bears that have No. 1 receivers in Julio Jones, Odell Beckham Jr., Dez Bryant, T.Y. Hilton and Alshon Jeffrey, respectively. If the Bucs want to remain competitive in future games, making an opposing quarterback steer his attention away from his favorite target is a very good start. For a majority of their Week 3 contest against the Texans, Hopkins was being “shadowed” by Tim Jennings. The same cornerback who was dropped by the Bears before the start of the season because he couldn’t crack it at the slot. The sample size may be small, but what we do have to work with raises some eyebrows. Is this a reflection of the ineffectiveness of the Tampa 2 defense or the players playing within the scheme? Well, that’s another conversation for another day.link
