TKraz seems pretty convinced Canales will be back. Either he won't be offered the job in Carolina or he won't take the job. Sure the Panthers job is not the best, but how secure is his job with the Bucs? Not so long ago it looked like a good bet that the entire coaching staff would be hitting the road. Now everything's rosy at One Buc... for now, but what job security does Canales have in Tampa Bay? If the team tanks next year, where will Canales be then?
IMO Licht is going to have to give Canales some more security if he doesn't want him to take the Panthers job if offered. How much do the Bucs want to give to Canales after just one year? Do they want to offer him the Mayo contract, guaranteeing him the HC job if Bowles departs? That may be a bit much for a one year OC, but the Bucs have to do something more than just give Canales a pat on the back if they expect him to decline the Panthers job.
well he wouldn't be interviewing for the Carolina job if he didn't want a head coaching gig so if they deem he is qualified, he will go there. No way, he wouldn't accept it unless they make him head coach in Tampa (Koetter/Lovie style) but don't think the Bucs would do that. Bowles coming off back to back division titles (say what you will) and simply not realistic they would do that.
His gig in Tampa isn't secure as all this playoff run did was secure Bowles another year. What potential occurrence for next year would be a 2-7 start and potential mid-season firing with Canales being interim. Not saying it's likely but can certainly happen and in that case Canales gets a trial run with Tampa.
I'd garner that more often than not, interim head coaches do not get the head coaching gig. Doesn't mean it cant happen, ala Antonio Pierce, just saying odds are stacked against you.
AND....if the Bucs do move on from Bowles after the 2024 season, they wont handicap a new head coach by saying, well you need to keep the offensive coordinator.
so sadly there is nothing they can do in this situation but fingers cross Carolina doesn't pick him. But if we have to replace Canales, here's hoping we can do better than Leftwich! haha
No way, he wouldn't accept it
Yes, I agree you are correctly stating the general rule.
You can almost hear his agent saying "this chance might not present itself again (he could even point to Leftwich LOL) so even if the job is less than perfect you have to strike when the iron is hot."
The things we have going for us are the general INSANITY that is the Panthers ownership or maybe the Bucs make him an Asst HC with a big raise and tacitly set up some transition, OR he GENUINELY means what he says about himself and the Bucs players (ie he thinks there is more good to come here)
The job of HC is so tough tot get though. Thats why I asked in one of these threads, what if we sign Mayfield but lose Canales?
Panthers' new GM, Morgan, has a connection with Canales from both of their tenures at Seattle. Could be worth watching.

Ouch. Didnt know that

well couple things.
1 - it's a lot easier to find a competent coordinator than it is a competent QB so i think we will be fine as long as our coordinator isn't Leftwich or Matt Patricia lmao. In a situation where we have to pick one....98% of us are picking Mayfield while of course there are 3 that would pick Canales and go with Tony who picks up trash on Tuesdays. Going 4-13 is better than winning playoff games, that will give us a chance to draft a Bryce Young, Kyler Murray, Trevor Lawrence, Daniel Jones, etc.
2 - Maybe they can try your method of assistant head coach which would then all but assure the short leash for Todd. Certainly set up better in Tampa. Good WR core - Evans, Godwin; mid tier everywhere else sans Wirfs. Team looks like a juggernaut next to Carolina who doesn't have much and not even a first round pick to boot.
Sports Illustrated on why Canales SHOULD be the next Panther HC

There is a way to make him the HC in waiting similar to Mayo in NE. You can put it in the contract that he'll be hired once the current coach leaves. That can sometimes convince a coach to want to wait for the opportunity from a good organization rather than jumping on the first dumpster fire team that comes up. But I just don't know if Canales has established himself enough to warrant that kind of deal after just one year, and Bowles is not near retirement so there's not a timeline for him leaving. Could be next year or ten years from now.

problem i see with that is Canales did not warrant that type of guarantee to be head coach in waiting.
Our offense went from averaging 18 points a game to 21 points a game. In our Super bowl caliber days, we were at 30. Top SB Contenders are in the 27 and up range. Not surprising to see SF, Baltimore and Detroit over that mark in the top 5 this year. (and of course Chiefs manage to just flick a fucking switch magically)
that number jumped to 24 on our 6-2 finish so we have some positive momentum.
best case scenario would be to see how the offense goes in year 2 with Canales, Mayfield, more experience for guys like White and Otton, Godwin and Evans back.
but if we had to choose as i sit here today....in 2025 season if Bowles was let go after 2024, we either get what's behind door #1 - Dave Canales or door #2 Freedom to choose whoever....be real hard not to choose door #2
I been concerned once i heard about the 2md interview. And now the reports are coming in that he is a very strong candidate. This isn't good. But guess we will know soon enough...
Give him a pay raise, he definitely has loyalty to the people that help him get where he is. I can see him being our HC in the next 5 years. Right now he has an all star staff and front office. I would not want to go into Carolina and be tasked with turning around the Panthers with no first rounder and a qb who may have been stunted by being in that offense. He sounds like he likes the Tampa area and will probably wants to stay. A bit of a raise maybe an extra 500k will show good faith and loyalty.
@badabingbucs He may want a HC gig but it doesn't mean he wants the Carolina job. A lot coaches take these interviews for experience down the road. Personally, I think its career suicide for him to take that Carolina job. The owner sucks, the QB sucks and the draft capital is limited this year. Hes gonna get 1 year to prove it or be fired like the rest of them .
Look if the opportunity is there he'll take it. Look at Leftwich. He turned it down and now he's a PE teacher in middle school... or whatever he's doing who knows. There's a #1 pick QB who needs some serious coaching. Theres familiarity with the GM.@badabingbucs He may want a HC gig but it doesn't mean he wants the Carolina job. Even if Canales were to be fired after a year, that's still more stability than he has currently in Tampa Bay. If Bowles gets fired after next year and the offense stalls because who knows Baker or Evans gets injured or who knows what can happen. He's out on the street and he probably doesn't have much of a golden parachute with his current contract. So what are the Bucs prepared to do to try to keep Canales? I imagine Licht has that as his priority right now, but it may not be enough whatever it is.
I just looked at Carolina's salary cap for next year on overthecap, and sportrac and all I can say is woof ! They're currently slated with 28 mil in cap space for 2024, while also having 18 players slotted for UFA, the big ones being CJ Henderson, DJ Chark, Luvu, Burns, and Shaq Griffin. That along with the previously mentioned lack of draft capital, Dan Morgan and whomever is ultimately signed as their next head coach are going to have a massive project on their hands.
I think he's gone. I wasn't aware with his ties with Dan Morgan. It sucks that we lose him to our division rivals and the second most hated rival in the division.
Now it'll be on Bowles to find another good OC.
