Kellen Moore my choice
According to Schefter/Pat McAfee Show - Carolina has offered Canales the HC job and Canales is almost certain to accept - Dave Canales is now the HC of the Carolina "Shithole" Panthers.
He's gone. Carolina is such a shit show lol... dude has 1 year of calling plays.
Insane
I used to believe you had to be a good playcaller to be a good head coach. But after watching so many really, really good play callers fail as Head Coaches, that belief started to wane. Being a Head Coach is more about being a leader than it is being a good playcaller. Hell, three of the four Head Coaches remaining in the playoffs never were Offensive/Defensive Coordinators (Kyle Shanahan is the lone exception) before being hired as Head Coaches.
I have no idea if Canales possess the qualities necessary to be a good HC or not. But his lack of experience as an offensive playcaller won't be what stops him. Since Carolina is division opponent, I don't want him to succeed. He's already starting out behind the eight-ball with that dickhead owner he'll be working for.

IMO Canales hasn't even proved he's a good playcaller or Offensive Coordinator yet, let alone done anything to indicate he's going to be a clutch HC. Although, I do agree, being a great coordinator doesn't automatically mean you'll be a great HC, a Head Coach needs to be the CEO who oversees everything, he doesn't necessarily need to be great at calling offensive or defensive plays.
Feels like another Raheem Morris situation to me, a dude who got promoted WAY too soon, who will inevitably fail to turn around literally the worst franchise in the NFL. Canales will inevitably be fired and spend another decade+ in the coordinator carousel, much like Rah (who's STILL waiting for a 2nd opportunity at HC lol).
It's a lot easier to find a new OC, being that there's a plethora of young creative offensive minds, both in the NFL and NCAA, than it will be for Carolina to find a starting NFL caliber QB, offensive playmakers, OL and completely turn around a terribly run franchise.
Sure, it sets Tampa back a bit, but its not like Canales showed up and instantly turned Tampa Bay into some offensive juggernaut lol despite our late season successes, for MOST weeks, Canales play calling was pretty suss, especially all of those vanilla runs on early downs that constantly but the Bucs into 3rd-and-long unwinnable situations.
Tampa is in a much better situation than we were going into 2023 - we have a starting QB, we have a decent OL that could be stellar, if we upgrade Center and Guard, opposite Mauch.
I have a feeling Tampa will be fine. I hate to lose Canales, because he definitely seemed like he could grow into a good OC... but it wouldn't be worth promising Canales our own future-coaching job, just to keep him around another season or 2.
This will backfire on Carolina, probably in a big way.
He's gone... Panthers new HC
Hope is he will fix Bryce Young
On the flip-side of all this, can someone explain to me how both Coordinators of last year's 2-15 Carolina Panthers (worst team in the league by far) are getting Head Coaching interviews? As I said above, this isn't all about playcalling ability. But damn - their team was 2-15 FFS.

I generally agree Biggs. I used to think that way as well, then once John Harbaugh took over and had much success with Baltimore I too started looking more closely at other attributes. As you said I think organizational skills along with leadership/motivational skills and the ability to delegate play larger roles in the success of a head coach. Sure experience as a play caller is definitely a plus, but really only makes a huge deal if said coach is going to be calling their own plays ( which I think Canales will take a shot at ). I know coaches are mercenaries much like players, but this one stings a little more as I was looking forward to seeing what his offense evolved into in year 2. If he does ultimately take this job with the Panthers then I wish him nothing but failure for the duration of his time as their HC. He's comes across as a nice guy and is obviously very bright, but to go to a division rival feels like (what i would imagine) your fiancé leaving you to marry your brother.
On to the next matter at hand. Who are some of the bright up and coming offensive minds in the college and pro ranks ? I've heard Brian Griese mentioned, but aside from him who's out there that could really help this offense grow ? Also as I mentioned in the offseason post, how is this year different from last year in terms of Bowles job security ? I know he won a playoff game (against a nosediving Eagles team ) but will we have an easier time finding coordinators this year, or will it be back to the same ole same ole that we went through with our coaching search last year due to questions of Bowles job security ?
Panthers D was top 5 , no ?
Panthers D was top 5 , no ?
4th in Yards
29th in Scoring
23rd in Rushing
3rd in Passing
What those numbers tell me is opposing offenses weren't really trying to push the ball down the field because they already had the game wrapped up pretty early. The 2-15 record and -180 point differential help confirm that.
Ok thanks
Things will be murky for the next OC now because Bowles will want to be married to the idea of Mayfield as his QB1. I don't know how many OC's will want to be tied down to him but after the season he had Canales.......someone hopefully worthy bitesI think he's gone. I wasn't aware with his ties with Dan Morgan. It sucks that we lose him to our division rivals and the second most hated rival in the division.
Now it'll be on Bowles to find another good OC.
The Bucs will promote Thad Lewis or Canales will
This will impact whether Mayfield resigns here as well as Evans. Everything has to be on hold until a new OC is hired. I don't think you can just assume they hire from within.
Mayfield will end up in Atlanta with belichick
