With bubble gum and paper clips at pass rusher and corner. And the Baker contract isn't a flex.

I don't know. Mayfield's $100,000,000 contract is pretty impressive for a "capped out" team.

Baker's deal is a steal when Jordan Love is the highest paid NFL QB and had almost identical stats with a better offensive mind (but worse receivers).

FTR, I'm not commenting that Mayfield's contract was either good or bad. I just want to make that clear before the Red Board GM makes this about the quality of Mayfield contract. That's not the point. The point is the team had the cap room to sign Mayfield, Wirfs, Winfield, & Evans to big contracts, and many others to normal contracts. That directly contradicts the annual "capped out" wolf-cry from the Red Board GM.

It truly is that gift that keeps on giving.

I mean, it kind of is.

He's an average/middle of the pack quarterback and he's being paid as such.

Plus, you've even admitted that it's nothing more than a series of 1-year deals.

I think JC said back then that the contract would be a disaster, so now saying it is "not a flex" is about as close as JC will ever get to saying he wrong

The Evans, Winfied and Mayfield deals contain $43.2M of void money. You got me, Greenberg is a cap genius.

How much void money is your team carrying again, Mr. GM?

He must be. He does what you say is impossible year after year after year after year after year.

You can either drop the charade or keep up the wolf-calling.

"The structure of these payments shows the Bucs did well in the deal in two key areas. First off, considering Wirfs is the most decorated tackle out of all the players who have signed deals this offseason, for him to not top the others in early cash flows should be considered an immediate win for the team. Secondly, by evenly spacing the cash flows and not front-loading them, it reduces the chances that Wirfs will want to re-negotiate his contract in 3-4 years before the deal expires."

"The Bucs reduced Tristan Wirfs’ 2024 cap hit by over $12 million with the extension. "

* * *

"The only parts of those payments that are fully guaranteed are his 2025 and 2026 payments. But the Bucs are rolling his guarantees. If Wirfs is on the roster the fifth day of the 2025 league year his 2026 salary becomes guaranteed. If he is on the roster the fifth day of the 2027 league year $10 million of that year’s salary is guaranteed.

This means that if for some reason the Bucs needed to get out of the deal early they could do so before the fifth day of the 2027 league year for just a $10,362,586 dead cap hit for that year (assuming they don’t restructure anything prior to that).

* * *

The Bucs will have a good amount of flexibility to reduce future cap hits for Tristan Wirfs. Currently his deal is set to have no dead cap when it expires. But if the Bucs need cap space from 2025-2029 they have plenty of opportunities to convert salary to pro-rated bonuses and reduce his cap hits"

"The total deal serves both sides as Wirfs, rightfully, gets to be the highest paid offensive tackle in the league while still ranking in the top 3-5 in his position group for years 1-3 cash flows. The Bucs get cap flexibility, a crucial fifth year on the deal and cash flows that don’t entirely break the bank early on in the deal."

@bucsbits love the article, thanks for posting.

It tracks with I have been considering: it does seem that along with adding players, a competent coaching staff, building a culture - the organization/front office has taken a developmental step.

Haven't ever seen an organizational step like this since I’ve been following the Bucs.

Successfully managing contracts and the cap!? That allows us to be competitive over a longer period of time.

Great time to be a Buccaneer fan!

Is this the Queipo write up?

If not, you should check that out. Great read as usual.

With Wirfs deal the Bucs have $20 mil in cap space in 2024.  What will they do with it?  They could roll it over to next year apparently.   Or....?
