Godwin would be a #2 on most teams, but McMillan will be the #2 on this one. It's pretty obvious that he's the man for the job. He was drafted to be Godwin's replacement, let's be honest about that. There isn't a missing piece on defense. There's about half a dozen. And $20 mil is too much for a 3rd WR on a running team
So, you’re willing to let a WR2 walk for a near $20M dead cap hit.
Great strategy!
As for Godwin's void money, $7.5 mil dead money will hit the cap if Godwin stays. Another $7.5 mil would be pushed to next year and $3.8 mil the following year. So an additional $11+ mil gets pushed back by resigning Godwin and that would come due if Godwin didn't resign.
Hope that clears it up a bit for you.
McMillan gives us plenty to be excited about but he's still very lean and thus will be prone to injury.
Godwin is a true Wr2 and was having a career year. His injury won't cause him to lose speed.
It's a clear and obvious signing we need and if we lose Coen we will need all the help we can get.
if we lose Coen
I would think if we keep Coen that even increases the odds they resign Godwin because that would mean a push to get beyond where we are now

Either way we need Godwin
The offense did just fine without him. We need better depth WRs though. We need depth at WR to upgrade from the practice squad level talent we have with Palmer and Shepard, but we can get that for much cheaper. I'd love to have Godwin back, but he's a luxury we can't afford at the market rate anyway.if we lose Coen

How is Godwin a luxury?
if you want to win or compete for a Superbowl, he is a must
you are banking on McMillian progressing?
You basically sign Godwin to a 3 year deal, spread out the cap hit
you extend Evans another year to also spread cap hit.
you restructure a few guys - Vea, Wirfs, Winfield
you cut Dean
You are able to afford 2 top level free agents on defense
I'd love to have Godwin back, but he's a luxury we can't afford at the market rate anyway.
We can absolutely afford it.
This has been proven over and over and over again.
And, since you’ve been shouting from the hilltops that 2025 is a title window year, why wouldn’t you want to re-up your WR2?
if you want to win or compete for a Superbowl, he is a must
If Coen comes back -- seems a little "iffy" at the moment - it would be a SB run so yes they would bring Godwin back
If you sign Godwin to a big three-year deal mostly guaranteed you are asking for trouble. The guaranteed money is likely to be about two thirds guaranteed. So $40 mil for a player who is coming off another major injury just after coming back from one. He deserves a ton of credit for the player he is and how he regained his form after the last injury, and he'll get his money from somebody possibly the Bucs. I just think that a three year $60 mil contract with $40 guaranteed is a contract the Bucs could be sorry they sign up for.The offense did just fine without him. We need better depth WRs though. I'd agree with most of this. Paying Godwin top-of-the-market rate is probably not in the cards, nor should it be, with his injury history.
However, Evans just took less than market rate, right? Maybe Godwin would be amenable to taking a hometown discount to keep the band together.
Good teams dont usually like to "reward" a team-leading player who goes down to injury . . by cutting him. Not exactly a great way to motivate the troops.
Hope they work it out
Bucs have about $12M of cap space heading into the offseason
Cutting Dean would open up about $10M of cap space
Restructuring Baker, Wirfs, and Winfield would open up - $56M
"There are a few ways to make that cap number go up. The first is restructures — per OTC, restructuring Baker Mayfield's contract would open up $21,558,750, Tristan Wirfs' would open up $19,864,000 and Antoine WInfield Jr.'s would open up $14,872,500, among others. You could also cut some players as cap casualties like Jamel Dean, who would open up $10,568,941 in cap space if he were to be cut post-June 1."
Pretty sure signing Godwin to multi year deal and extending Evans would make it a win win.
Offense is pretty much in tact, not much needed there. Use the remainder of the cap space to sure up the defense, likely can get 2 top 5 free agents at their positions at edge and CB.
The offense did just fine without him. We need better depth WRs though.
I wonder if re-signing Chris Godwin would help the depth in WR room? Crazy thought, but you never know - it might work.
So the caveat that has not been mentioned is yes Godwin has an 18 mil dead cap hit BUT.....He would have to be extended BEFORE Feb 27th I think it is in order for the hit to get pushed down the road, otherwise if it's after that he'll have an 18 mil hit + whatever the hit is for the first year of a new contract so that's motivation to get it done on the Bucs side sooner rather than later...I'd like to see a 3 year 60ish mil contract offered with maybe 40 guarantee and try to make it where this years contract only hits next years cap for 10ish million(assuming it's before that Feb 27th date) if it's after then Tampa should let him hit the market and see what kind of offers he gets....Worst case he counts toward the compensation formula the next year.....Let me say for the record that I don't want to see Godwin go elsewhere next year, but I also don't want the team to basically have the equivalent cap hit of if he was franchised if he signs for market value after that date (18mil=22-23 mil new salary on top of it) especially considering we have no idea what version we'll get after a severely dislocated ankle
