I'm not impressed with the guy personally at this stage...I don't see good technique out of him and believe he's in for a rude awakening when he plays against NFL tackles.
which college DEs do you believe have good technique?
That's a question better reserved for the draftniks on this board. I haven't watched much college ball because of my schedule but I did make it a point to tape a couple of his games..I've seen a few times where instead of attacking the line of scrimmage, he gets turned sideways and is manhandled. My impression of him is he's probably been able to beat everyone with his athleticism and relies on it to make those highlight plays but generally is very unpolished.
Well part of the Clonwey problem is that for all that speed he isn't a speed rusher. He doesn't threaten the edge. The problem is without that long speed I'm not sure how well he can force the OTs onto skates where he gets them off balance. He can toss around college linemen but NFL guys will eat that crap for lunch.
BS. He has a slow first step. He'll probably run in the 4.65 - 4.7 range at the combine. No trade ups, but I'll take a chance @ 7.
This is a lie. Slow 1st step? Complete fiction.
4.46 is Dwight Freeney speed. Clowney plays like a LDE with his awesome 3 sacks this year, and 2 of those sacks were gifts, when he was blocked into the QB, rolling to his side. It sounds like you already bought into the workout warrior hype. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.
It sounds like you're just really naive. Every team game planned for him and he was sometimes triple teamed with the majority of the plays going away from him yet he was still a big hassle. Maybe you should watch football instead of read the stat sheet. He's going to get double teamed frequently as a rookie and has the potential to be beating doubles in his prime. That plus McCoy would open up so many possibilities for our defense
You sound really naive thinking the Bucs actually have a shot at drafting Clowney. Ain't happening. I've watched every draft pick for the past 20 years. I don't fall for workout warriors with a ton of hype and a signature hit. How many championships does Mario Williams have? Zero. What impact did Mario Williams have against the Bucs this year? Nothing.
change the word "McCoy" to "a good DT", and "our" to "a" and then nothing in my post has anything to do with the Bucs and the main point remains the same. How many Championships did Mario Williams have? You think you have a point there i guess. How many championships did Dan Marino have? JJ Watt was the best defensive player in the NFL on a great defense 2 years ago now, he was the best player on a bad defense. Eli Manning has 2 championships which is more than most great players, and he isnt great himself. You cant single out a player and think you have some kind of point like that.

Clowney uses jukes and good footwork off the line like a good receiver does to beat press man. There not too many DEs out there that can do stuff like that, I suggest you re-watch him and look for that stuff because its going to destroy OTs in the NFL and has nothing to do with tossing around lineman.

That juke move is the problem. He jukes and powers but this isn't a Reggie White rip and arm bar. The thing is if he can't threaten the edge then OT will sit on that inside move. If he can't get the tackles off balance because they are on their heels to come under them he will have problems.
dal - are you saying clowney is a slow, weak prospect? a guy that cant get the edge and cant bullrush?
I think he could potentially do really well with the explosiveness and strength drills, but 4.46 is close to impossible for a man his size. I'd think the fastest someone his size is capable of running is in the 4.55 range, which is still really good.

He isn't an edge bender IMHO. He is agile enough to get under college tackles and strong enough to move them around. I don't think he is going to have that same luck with NFL tackles. Reggie White wasn't an edge bender but he was uncannily strong and technically sound so he could do that but he is a freak. When I look at Clowney I see a guy who can't get around NFL tackles. That means that they are not going to be bailing out at the snap - this is how Rice and Freeny got a ton of their sacks, think of the first sack Rice had in the Super Bowl. The tackles will sit on that under move, be on balance, and Clowney isn't Reggie White strong to push them out of the way without them being off balance.

He's supposed to have incredible natural strength so I think he'll be able to put his hands on NFL OTs but the few knocks I've read of him is he isn't as flexible as you'd like an edge rusher to be and may be more of a physical, explosive bull rusher. He might be the next Michael Strahan.
dal - is there a current nfl DE youd compare clowney to? would you consider him a r2 or r3 talent? i dont watch a lot of film, just thought he was considered elite/once in a decade type of guy.
I jumped on the bandwagon awhile back, I think he is the real deal. BPA. I will be surprised if he doesn't go #1 overall.
1. I don't believe it. 2. I don't care about 40 times for a DE.
A fast 40 time, points to fast twitch muscle fibers. A big part of a fast 40 is the getoff.

40 times have very little to do with quick twitch. It's mostly about proper technique and top speed in shorts. The 10 yard time, 3 cone drill, and shuttle are much better predictors of quick twitch and acceleration. Even the long and vertical jump show more about explosiveness than the 40. The 40 is the most overrated and mostly useless event at the combine. While it can be useful for some positions, it means next to nothing for the O-line and D-line.

Agree, I was sayin the getoff [first step] was the only relevent part.

A bit Carlos Dunlap, long athlete but without the premier burst. People who really like him see a latter day Bruce smith.
