Peter Schrager, every week on GMFB, gives out his Coach of the Week Award.

Today, he gives it to Liam Coen.

Going to now be a household name outside of TB.

He’ll get multiple HC offers this offseason.

Tampa Bay currently has the #3 overall offense and #4 scoring offense, including the #5 passing offense and t4th rushing offense.

Incredible job by Coen and his staff, as they are over-performing their talent level. It's the exact opposite of the 2022 Byron Leftwich-led unit.

Some say he's still calling the HB dive on first down with the high school team he's coaching

It’s no surprise his biggest supporter is also one of Bowles’ biggest supporters.

Mediocrity loves mediocrity.

Not sure how anyone can argue in favor of Lefty at this point..is he even employed?

One possible scenario is to:

2025- bring back Bowles and Coen, make Coen Asst Head Coach/OC, essentially HC in waiting.

2026- move Bowles to FO as Defensive Consultant, and move Coen to HC.

Saves some face for Bowles and keeps Coen in Tampa for minimum 4-6 years.

These are very similar to the options I laid out a few weeks ago.

Its logical, after all - many teams seeking a new head coach may not have the same advantages (great o-line & running attack, great receivers, good tight ends, etc). However, some are trying to make the two mutually exclusive.

I don’t want to lose Coen either, but it’s not like Tampa Bay wouldn’t be an attractive destination for FA’s/assistant coaches. So, there are advantages to staying with the Bucs.

It was really only one dumbass.

And no, despite begging people for interviews and jobs, he is still unemployed. That's how bad his playcalling tape is.

The current offense is light years ahead of Lefty's 2022 offense. That was so hard watch. It's really fun to watch Coen's offense. Even plays that are unsuccessful still show the creativity and imagination that was sorely missing before.

@bucsbits Well it looks like the Jags are wanting Coen and a lot of you said he will be back . I hope he turns it down but I knew the interest would be out there . You cannot let this guy go .

Why? He was awful, which is why he's had to beg for interviews and still doesn't have a job. Why should anybody stop saying as such?

Coen will have to learn from Bobby Slowik's mistake.  if there's a half decent head coaching gig available, you take it!

That dude's star certainly regressed from last year Stroud's first year!  I imagine he will still get looks but wont be as sure fire a hire this year.

Ben Johnson is the top commodity no doubt

but let's look at the risk for Coen.  His end goal is obviously to become head coach.

If he stays and....

father time catches up to Mike Evans

Baker, who looks to have turned a corner, reverts back into his roller coaster career performance

Injuries happen to key players on offense in 2025 - Baker, Evans, Wirfs, Bucky, etc. that make the offense not as robust and bottom half of league.  Reference the 49ers this year as to what can happen to a team.

Bucs have a terrible 2025 as a result, go 5-12, 6-11; Bucs clean house and are smitten by a big name -Bill Belichick as an example...or maybe Mike Tomlin or John Harbaugh becomes available.

Coen would need a written guarantee from the Bucs that he is to take over after Bowles....but does that then mean a time limit for Bowles?  What if Bucs win Superbowl one of next two years and Bowles doesn't want to retire...Bowles would jump from 5th overall successful Bucs head coach to #1.  Again, all hypothetical, but not sure the Bucs can make that guarantee unless Bowles has indicated to them his plans

Well, I did NOT say he wouldn't have interest but the Jags put out a list pf people to interview, just to be clear

I still think he may be back and I laid out the Ben Johnson example.

We will see.

Either way life will go on and the Bucs will survive. Some of the posters here might not because that would mean another season of Bowles lmao

One reason Coen could easily come back:

"Stat to know: The Buccaneers recorded more YAC over expectation (plus-498) than any other team this season, per NFL Next Gen Stats. NGS outputs an expected number of yards after the catch based on the positioning, speed and direction of all 22 players on the field when the catch is made. And the Bucs have four players with at least 90 YAC over expectation: RB Bucky Irving (123), WR Chris Godwin (112), RB Rachaad White (99) and TE Cade Otton (90). YAC accounted for 54% of Tampa Bay's receiving yards, the seventh most in the league. -- Walder

a healthy Godwin

add him back in and hopefully keep McMillan playing well, Otton back . . . the offense could average 40 ppg

Posted a couple times that Coen might come back because inside One Buc its UNDERSTOOD that the defense is in need of a rebuild when we pay off the Brady SB debt.

Licht quoted in the Times:

“It’s just kind of the cycle that we’re in with this team,” general manager Jason Licht said a few days before the Commanders game. “Two years ago when we had the — I don’t want to say rebuild — but we knew it was going to take some time to fill every spot on the defense. Is there some spots that we could add to? Of course. But it takes time.

“And what he has done with what we have, I think, has been remarkable.”

As I posted, its at least possible that the Bucs look at Bowles as a coach who got the best out of a CAP DEAD team and veen that they made a conscious choice to start with the offense first when Mayfield showed up, thinking that Bowles could manufacture some defense "with what we have."

Or maybe Licht is just trying to help Bowles out before firing him!

Don’t think Bowles will be fired. As BC has pointed out, Dungy faired differently, so anything is possible.

Just think the owners won’t let Coen leave without a fight.

Coen will be back, and if yesterday is an indication of how we close out this season, Bowles likely will be as well.

I’ve alluded to this before, but due to the needless hand-wringing I thought I’d introduce it back into the conversation; we have no worries. smart, wealthy owners don’t make mistakes they’ve made before.

Spot on

I’m still very concerned about clock management & situational issues with Bowles, as he still defaults/defers to the defense and err’s to the side of being overly cautious when we needs to trust & score points with the offense - not just think he can get a stop from his defense, because the analytics say the DC should punt:

also hoping he is able to improve his defense well above “below average”.

Still concerned with those aspects that caused me to go negative on Bowles. Hoping he can improve/grow in those areas of head coaching. We know he’s a good/smart DC - he’s GOT to learn to trust his offense in critical spots and that goes for clock management.

Glad we locked up Coen for another year as OC - didn’t think the owners would let him get away. They have grown and learned and spend money when warranted. Good for us!

WT is busily returning to draft issues..
