As much as it pains many here, if the DEFENSE doesn't play as it it did the game is a BLOWOUT for the Panthers.
Just going off mayfield's INTs it should be 17-10 Panthers at half and then 24 to 10 Panthers in the 3rd quarter?
The teams trade TDs in the 4th quarter and we get only 2 FGs. We lose by 8
Easily the lone bright spot on this coaching staff.
I understand the sentiment, but I have to give a tip of the hat to Kevin Carberry, OL coach. Bucs OL has improved a lot from last year with rookies and 2-3 year experienced players.

minus the last drive where they gave up the game clinching td, the defense played well
Only caveat is Carolina is a bottom 5 offense
still, giving up a TD there…SMH

SR was asked about Bowles being on the hot seat after last night's game. This was his response:
"While the defense didn’t play great against second-year quarterback Bryce Young, who threw for a touchdown and ran for one more, Bowles’ unit did a great job against Hubbard, who was held to just 43 yards on 12 carries. Tampa Bay’s offense struggled with uncharacteristic miscues like a slew of penalties and a pair of interceptions thrown by Baker Mayfield in regulation. And it didn’t help that the Bucs were 0-of-8 on third downs to start the game before finishing 2-of-12.
But I will say this about Bowles’ defense. Tampa Bay held Carolina to just two field goal attempts after Mayfield’s picks. And while the defense benefited from a pair of missed field goals, the Panthers did score just 23 points. That’s better than the 30 points the defense has allowed on four occasions this season."
Watch that TD again on the replay and, in particular, watch AWJ's reaction to a ball thrown to JJ Russell's guy
at some point the talent on the field matters
Panthers version of most and least impressive (studs v duds)
Dud: Panthers run defense
The Panthers also played pretty tight coverage and seemed to have Mayfield confused for much of the game. This was their best defensive performance in some time. However, one exception to the rule was their effort against the run. While they started out strong containing Tampa's run game in the first three quarters, Bucky Irving and Rachaad White were able to blow the gates open in the fourth quarter and overtime. They combined for 228 yards on the ground and both averaged over six yards per carry."
and this:
Dud: RB Chuba Hubbard
In a rare exception in an otherwise strong season, running back Chuba Hubbard had a rough performance. He only managed 43 rushing yards on 12 carries. You can place at least some of that blame on the offensive line, where the Panthers didn't get the push they usually do in the run game.

Was referring to the more senior coaches.
But, yeah, Carberry has been outstanding. Excellent hire by Liam.
"Carolina's defense did not allow a third-down conversion until the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay finished the game converting on 2-of-12 opportunities (16.7%). Coming into the matchup, the Buccaneers ranked second in the NFL in third-down conversion percentage (50.4%)."
Let's not pretend Theilen didn't score an earlier TD.
We just got a super lucky call. Defense didn't really "stop" them
The play calling could have been better as Baker was reeling backwards on several plays in passing attempts. But Coen also can do only so much as a player caller if Barton is taking some bad penalties and fumbling snaps. Mayfield could make better decisions with the football but his teammates are dropping passes that they should catch.
Bucs defense, given the short field that Carolina was working with most of the game, did better than I thought. An NFL caliber punter should be able to flip field position but Gill was just flat out bad and put the defense in a bind.

Yep. It's frustrating we can't get a punter who can...punt.

Well, but then the official stats dont mean anything because breaks go both ways but ultimately the score is what matters right? In other words, the arguments will just increase to "yeah but they missed two field goals . . ."
again, not saying the defense is great just saying that compared to the offense they contributed above their ability for much of the game and thats with extreme backups in a couple positions
That game is close because the offense sucked and the defense, as poor as it is, held us in it. Its been the OPPOSITE of that mostly
I know Coen is a "genius" and all that, but his unit was the problem most of the game, right?
The Panthers first half TD drive starts at the Bucs 36 yard line. We had a 22 yard punt BUT that punt comes from our 14 yard line AFTER a holding penalty and a 13 yard sack take the offense backward about 25 yards.
Bad snaps, fumbles, holding, lineman downfield, false starts on WRs, and outside run on 3rd and goal from the TWO.
Imo, those are indeed all coaching issues. Emphasizing and impressing upon the players the absolute significance and gravity of those small details is what separates good coaches from great ones. Coaches like Belichick and Andy Reid hammered the small stuff. That's why they almost never those kinds of issues come the playoffs.
Now, to be fair, it's Coen's first season as OC, and the first season for the entire offensive unit in his system. And they probably don't even have th entire playbook installed yet. So mistakes are to be expected. Throw in the loss of Godwin, and for a short time Evans as well, and the install most likely was not only interrupted, but it was also surely abbreviated for the younger/inexperienced players trying to absorb all the new concepts. So these kinds of mistakes we're seeing should be expected. In fact, I'd say it really could've been a lot worse these last 4-5 weeks. But if this team is going to make any nois in the playoffs, they're going to have to eliminate most of these procedural mistakes, or they'll be one-and-done, and it'll be assuredly on drawing too many flags at crucial times during the game.
Coen has rookie McMillan, Barton and Irving so it isn't easy for him. The defense has T. Smith as a rookie when he is playing, but beyond that it is a veteran squad. And they should play a lot better as they are more seasoned than players on offense overall. Otton and White are veterans but they are a lot younger than a lot of veteran players on defense.
Yep, matches what I saw on the field.
Im sure the X experts were all over that..
