Bowles actually acknowledged the play calling problem, but say run MORE

“We didn’t stick with [running Rachaad White],” Bowles said. “ We couldn’t get a groove going and the offensive flow going as far as the play calling was concerned. And we got behind the 8-ball a few times with a few penalties, but we gotta stick with [the run game] no matter what. We gotta make sure we get those 50-plus pass [attempts] down.”

Well you'll start passing more once you're down two scores even in the first half. Again from memory the first 3 drives (maybe it was 4) started with a run. We kept playing for third down on the road with a loud crowd.

Everything about the game plan stunk

God dammit I hate this website. I was editing my post to add the drive context then posted it and I guess it took too long so it got deleted.

The short of it was we did run on first a decent but not as much as I thought...

My favorite run plays were the 2nd & 10 run for Tucker and the run for two yards to start the second half.

And there was technically 3 screens, 2 were to White but both were flare/bubble with linemen staying in to block

Almost right. Drive 1 is a run. Drive 2 is a pass.  Drive 3 is 2 first down runs.  Drive 4 is 2 1st down passes. Every one of those first down passes was incomplete or extremely short.

The one curiosity is that you seem to describe running for 5 yards on 1st down as playing for 3rd down. The Mike Evans injury pass is preceded by a 5 yard run on 1st down that give them tghe freedom to call anything on 2nd.

Maybe its that analytics make you impatient!! lol

Both offense and defense seem slow to start. On defense it seems like Bowles comes out a little vanilla and then adapts to what he sees. Not sure thats true, but it seems that way.

Is it possible Grizz is similar? That would be strange, but in most games you can see an adjustment.  Lions game expecting zone, etc

I thought Bowles pitched a gem outside of a couple deep zone coverages on third downs

I hate playing for third down. It's bad analytics no matter how good you are.

Can you explain what you mean by "playing for 3rd down?" A 5 yard run on 1st down is a wasted play? Or, you mean using 2nd down as a down to take a shot?

In my eyes, playing for third down is just that.  How can we make the most of our fist two plays designed to be either runs or underneath passes, so we can have a manageable third and short where the entire playbook is open to defend.  Obviously if the first two plays get a first, even better, but playing for third down comes more into play when talking about clock management, playing with a lead to kill the clock.

Third and two doesn't need to be a passing down.

Playing for third down is anytime you run the ball on 2nd and 5 or longer.

My biggest gripe with it is running on 2nd and 8 or longer to set up third and manageable.

If you run on 2nd and 5 you're playing for third down but I'm somewhat ok with it.

Again from memory the first 3 drives (maybe it was 4) started with a run.

We had 8 1st down runs with a 37.5% success rate.

Didn't run a single PA on 1st down until the 2nd half.

Again, this was a very poorly called game by Grizz.

Hope he bounces back against NOLA.

It's surprising he didn't run PA on first more in the first half since he wanted to go deep

The play where Evans is injured is a PA pass on 2nd and 5, set up by a successful 1st down run.

I think you made a Lefty comparisons.  Did you see that Bowles and GRIZZ made the SAME COMPARISON, albeit in a way that might differ from what you guys are saying?

"Yeah, 50 throws in a game cannot happen,” Grizzard said. “It’s got to be through leaning on the run, trusting the run, and sticking to that – especially in the first half – being able to establish it.

“Once you got into the fourth quarter and it was, what, 13–14 minutes left and it essentially turned into a two-minute drill, then you’re really forced to throw it. If we can handle [moving the ball on the ground] earlier on and keep that [game] closer, that way we can now turn the fourth quarter into having an opportunity to run some of them, I think it evens the game out a little bit.”

AND WIRFS (look out for that "playing for 3rd down")

“You never want to get behind the sticks like that and then have it end up being a game where you are slinging it and they are pinning their ears back,” Wirfs said. “That is never fun.

“I know we were all feeling that the next day. … Yeah, that was not fun.”

We [have] to do our best to get the run game going so we are not in that situation [of passing 50 times],” Wirfs said. “[The line can] help everybody out.

“Put it on our shoulders.”

if that is accurate one reason would be that their O-line was getting destroyed. First drive. they start with a good run by White and then come right back with a PA pass.  When Mayfiled tusn around the who D-line is in his face. He scrambles and trips
