"Mayfield had five passes farther than 20 yards. Two were completed, both to Emeka Egbuka. Interestingly enough, both were touchdowns.

While five passes over 20 yards may not seem like much, consider last year in Week 1 against the Commandos, Mayfield attempted one pass over 20 yards, which was incomplete.

So Grizzard kept his word: He wanted to keep Coen’s offense but just sprinkle in a few deep throws. That is how things transpired in Atlanta on Sunday."

Longer passing than Coen will disrupt some flow, but if it delivers more TDs, so be it!

Bowles

"When the game sped up in two-minute, I thought he was at his best,” Bowles said of Grizzard on the Buccaneers Radio Network. “That’s when he was the calmest because he didn’t have to think. So he was just calling the plays right off the top of his head that he knew he wanted, and knew that would work against them. He called the game great. I think we started out slow, a little butterflies there. But I think after the first quarter, he really picked it up and I think he called a solid game.”

I wonder if we come out no huddle, up tempo?

Week one, and I can say with certainty.  We are much better off with Grizz as our OC.  Think about Barton getting shuffled from calling out blocking assignments and figuring out where a blitz/stunt may be coming from, to being the blindside protection at left tackle.

We are an entirely different team without Wirfs.  Period.  Grizz did an amazing job in a hostile environment.

after one game? lol

offense looked like shit in the first half but will chalk that up to lack of preseason reps

in any event, the Bucs could have scored 50 and you would still have to caveat it with it being one game.

after 1 week, they are ranked 24th in yards and 13th in points scored compared to top 5 in both categories last year.  So while i was pumped with the second half offense, need to ensure the sluggish starts aren't a recurring item.

Given the talent on our offense, it would appear we are fine with anyone with half a brain at OC

  • Baker Mayfield playing top 10 QB level and ascending
  • a top 10 offensive line - 3 studs on the offensive line (when healthy) in Wirfs, Goedeke, and Barton.  Interior guards are good as well
  • An elite WR score with Evans, Godwin (when healthy) and Egbuka.  Not to mention solid pieces in McMillian and Otton.
  • Bucky Irving at running back

i mean shit that offense better be top 5

in any event, it appears Grizz is better than Canales but would still have to see a season worth of games to see if he was as good as Coen

and can't compare Coen on the Jaguars where he has a lesser QB and talent.

This is probably the most important comparison between Grizz and Coen, as I think ehinote correctly pointed out in one of his summaries. The Bucs were (I think) the top 1st Qtr scoring offense last season and it mattered in a big way because those early leads kept the run game going.  The Bucs alos seemed to lose when they did not get off to their usual quick start, biggest example being the playoffs.

Having gone back and watched the game again, people have to resist the urge to compare Week 1 Grizz to 2024 Coen.  And the way the Falcons game played out only makes things worse because the slow start stands in such contrast to 2024 Coen.  if you can get past that though, Grizz is successful running as the game goes on and is alos successfully calling some plays that directly impacted the game.

Its just one game so no way to pass any meaningful judgment, but maybe (hopefully) its not as bad as some seem to think.

Baker is also processing more, cuz Bredesen is likely not calling blocking/blitz assignments that had been Barton’s job.

Barton also did an amazing job at LOT - sure he had some mental lapses - but he’s also facing the most athletic linemen every play at a position he last had game experience at Duke over a year ago.

Thats a lot of new mental processing by everyone. Grizz, Baker, Barton, Bredesen, and two Jordan did ok at it against ATL - but Texans edge/d-linemen are going to kick it up a notch or two.

Baker can be counted on in crunch time, Grizz is figuring it out, and Barton will have to step up awareness/reaction even more.

Sheesh, watching that Texans against Rams, Texans defense is really good. Our 4 man rush is going to have to generate some pressure/sacks to keep CJ off-balance.

And…another Texans offensive lineman bites the dust.

There should be ZERO excuses as to why we don’t have CJ flat on his ass throughout the entirety of this game.

At first, I couldn’t believe we’re 2.5 point dogs; but then I remembered Bowles’ outstanding primetime record.

Well here's the comparison:

Coen Game 1 - 30 carries, 112 yards 3.7 YPC.

Griz Game 1 - 23 carries 104 yards 4.4 YPC.

OK so what was your point again?

Okay.

Now take out the Baker scrambles from each game.

OK. Non-Baker rushing:

Baker 3 for 21 in '24 so that's 27 for 91 equals 3.4 ypc for Coen Game 1.

Baker 5 for 39 in '25 is 18 carries for 65 equals 3.6 YPC for Griz Game 1.

In 2024, it was 25 carries for 93 yards (3.7 YPC)

In 2025, it's 18 carries for 62 yards (3.4 YPC)

My math is right from the stats I saw but whatever.  In any case the OPs point is disproven.  There wasn't a big difference between Coen and the Griz week 1.  But the Coen Crew excelled as the year went on and of course we have yet to see what the Griz Gang will do going forward.

Canales called a pretty good game in his first outing against the Vikes so I have a similar vibe with Grizzard's play calling against Atlanta.  Difference is I think Grizzard will improve at a faster rate while Canales took a bit longer to have the team fully buy in and also have a feel for play calling.

Correct.

Hence, why I'm not putting a ton of stock into it. Especially, with the makeshift line they played with.

I like what I am seeing from Grizzard.  As the PR staff noted in their post game articles for the Bucs vs Houston matchup Grizzard is showing an intelligent as a play caller to try to help this rag tag OL and have Mayfield release the football quickly.

Love the play calls by Grizzard.  What they are doing with no OL and 1/2 of the starting WR out is amazing. Loving the deeper shots.  When there is a full slate of WR with both tackles there will be an additional 10 more ppg.

Bucs lost PPG because of missed kicks. They would be in the top ten in PPG if the kicks are made so that is impressive if you consider all the injuries along the OL and WR.
