Oh for sure and perhaps his grades should be on a curve for that...
But that doesn't mean he was good in those first few games.
But the most important thing is he's getting better.
Or, given what he had to work with and never having called games before, he was indeed good...
I am sure Grizz is getting better but it's not that hard to see the first few games as more handcuffs than play calling. One of the easiest examples is Otton. Staying in to help versus getting out.
either way though, it's working

Yeah, still feeling like he's way better than Coen after he just shit the bed vs a bunch of practice squad players and threw deep all game like Canales?

You are super emotional. You should probably go shave it, and have a glass of wine.

Coen from Oregon? yeesh
Not sure anyone says "way better." Some say the offense is doing okay even with very substantial injuries. last night was the exception, not the rule.
Lots of game tape and stats now and so you can see an OFFENSIVE trend that was really highlighted in the Lions game. Wonder if the Bucs will adjust the offense at the BYE? They probably have to because the Lions just showed the league the best way to defend the Bucs.
IF ONE WERE TO summarize the comparison to Coen's offense so far this year, it would be that the Bucs have thrown the ball deeper. It has mostly worked, somewhat INEFFICIENTLY, at least UP UNTIL THE LIONS GAME when Mayfield was mostly throwing against ZONE DEFENSES. This is form a Lion's website before the game:
“Baker Mayfield has attempted a downfield pass (10+ air yards) on 37.4% of passing attempts this season, the 2nd-highest rate of any quarterback. On these downfield passes, Mayfield has completed 45.2%, a mark below league average (48.2%). However, he leads the league in downfield attempts (73), resulting in 33 completions for 845 yards (3rd-most), and 9 touchdowns (1st). His 7 deep touchdown passes (20+ air yards) are 4 more than any other quarterback this season.”
"Mayfield currently has the sixth-best passer rating in the NFL (108.5), and sixth-best EPA per dropback (0.23 points per passing play), and is the No. 1 quarterback in the NFL in EPA per dropback against zone coverage (0.41). For reference, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is No. 2 behind Mayfield, and we saw him take advantage of the Lions’ zone coverage schemes in Week 6."
If there is an area where Mayfield is less effective, it’s against man coverage: 0.05 EPA per dropback (22nd).
THIS IS WHERE THE LIONS GAMEPLAN KICKS IN:
"The Lions utilize man coverage at a very high rate (fifth most in the NFL), which could set up a way for Detroit to slow down the Bucs’ efficiency."
“This season, the Lions defense has used man coverage on 39.3% of dropbacks, the 5th-highest rate of any defense. When using man coverage, the Lions fare slightly above league average in yards per attempt (6.8) and have allowed the 2nd-most touchdowns (9). Baker Mayfield has completed 52.3% of passes against man coverage, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt (8th-fewest).”
When teams utilize man coverage, it slows down the unfolding of the play and puts extra pressure on the Bucs’ offensive line (who have had to replace two starters) to hold up. As a result, Mayfield has been forced to scramble on 21.2% of his dropbacks vs. man coverage. While Mayfield has produced 79 rushing yards and 35 passing yards on scrambles vs. man coverage this season (second most in the NFL), the Lions’ defensive line has done a nice job of playing contain against mobile quarterbacks this season, holding Mahomes to 32 rushing yards last week and Lamar Jackson to 35 rushing yards in Week"
So where Mayfield has punished pressure a few times this year witrh key runs and deep pass completions to push defenses back, he did neither against the Lions,. He fell on his only real run against a Lion defense that has kept all running QBs in check. He missed nearly every -- maybe every - pass over 20 yards. We lost our MAN beater (Evans) early and Egbuka was playing injured.
WILL WE ADJUST AT THE BYE?

This joke continues to be hilarious. I'm taking notes for my open mic night tomorrow.

Our run game is back to Lefty levels of inefficiency... Largely because he's predictably running on first over and over then again seems to think 2nd 8 --> 3rd and 5 (playing for third down) is a recipe for success.
Grizz shit the bed and because he can't scheme the run game he's relied on Baker continuing to play lights out.

I dont know about Lefty levels, but yes the run game is the glaring difference. That was Coen, in game changes, triple RPO and of course the Pony Package. So, I think Grizz is trailing there for sure, BUT no right side of the line and no Irving makes that a little tough to be JUST play calling?
I doubt you are able to get a cohesive run game with some of the stuff Coen ran with the line changing all the time. Otherwise, he'd be doing it right? Even just mimicking, Grizz would be running the stuff he has from Coen

Well, Grizz hasn’t had his #1 most of the year, so…
Wasn’t the run/pass breakdown for the game, 90% pass, 10% run?
I agree that the initial runs came on first down a lot, but he didn’t seem to mix it up early, and didn’t stay with it to see if it could stop the aggressiveness of the d-line (especially later in the game). Of course, as we fell behind, the pressure mounted to pass in an effort to catch up.
Just a bad game.

It was certainly predictable

I definitely could be wrong (let me emphasize that lol), but I think this is a bit of a misnomer? I think its one of those "feels that way" things that people express during the game, but then doesn't necessarily match up when you look back.
In the first half the Bucs have 8 drives. If you take out the 8th because its all passing over the last 21 seconds of the half, then on the other 7 drives the Bucs ran on 1st down (an intentional run, not a scramble) a total of 4 times. They passed on 1st down 5 times. So thats already favoring passing and while down two scores OR LESS.
More important to me though, the Bucs WIN 2 runs (1st down run of 4 yards or more) and lose 2, but the 5 passes yield only 1 win play and and a fumble and an INT.
Anyway, I havent bothered to look, but I am pretty sure Coen's offense under similar parameters is very lose to 4 run/5 pass. For the season we were something like 45% run play.
The real difference if we are looking for one might be that Coen's offense with its very short passing had a lot of rhythm and often scored early. Grizz is playing without the same talent (especially a consistent line) and also throwing longer, which is often less rhythm because of the variability.
I know this is hard for many to accept but the Lions defense just beat us, especially in the trenches.
Coen's offense in all of 2024 averaged about 29 points a game. Grizz's offense before the Lions game is 27.5, but thats without the consistent O-line and without Irving and Evans or Godwin.
Grizz is not really the problem and was not the problem in the Lion's game. thats should be pretty clear just from the number of obviously missed passes from Mayfield. I think he is something like 0-7 on passes over 20? I dont know what he's been before the Lions game, but not that. Not all on Mayfield, some of that is PRESSURE (he under throws a TD to Egbuka arguably because of pressure)
Agree. As I said previously, I think this game under Grizz, aligns with the terrible game Coen had in Denver. Let’s hope Grizz learns on a similar trajectory.I know this is hard for many to accept but the Lions defense just beat us, especially in the trenches.
