The Best Player Who Could Be Cut from Every NFL Roster This Offseason By Alessandro Miglio , Featured Columnist May 20, 2015 Cuts_Zpsia3Jn3Fq.jpgDavid Banks/Getty Images Tough roster cuts are inevitable in the NFL, and plenty are yet to come as teams move into the preseason and have to trim down to 53-man squads. That means some quality players may be hitting the market in the coming months—but who?Let's take a look at some of the best players who could get cut during the preseason. These are guys who might be pushed out by incoming free agents or rookies, or they are simply bad fits on their own teams.Arizona Cardinals Best Player Possibly Cut: RB Marion Grice The backfield has become rather intriguing in Arizona.Marion Grice wound up in the mix to start last season with Andre Ellington battling injuries and ineffectiveness, but he could be battling to stay on the roster this offseason. For starters, Ellington heads into the season much healthier than last year. Also, the Cardinals drafted David Johnson in the third round this year. With Stepfan Taylor and Kerwynn Williams also around, Grice might be the odd man out.Atlanta FalconsBest Player Possibly Cut: DL Tyson JacksonThis one could simply be a matter of a bad fit for a new defense.Tyson Jackson may not have a natural place in new head coach Dan Quinn's defense, as Scott Carasik mused earlier this offseason:This could be a very real situation in which Jackson doesn't make the roster because he's not a starter and the others just fit the substitution roles better than he does. Jackson was a poor signing in the first place, and if Quinn truly does have the final call on the 53-man roster, he could be gone before opening day.Jackson could be a nice piece elsewhere, however. He was a quality component of the Kansas City defense just a couple of years ago, after all.Baltimore RavensBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Aldrick RobinsonThe Baltimore Ravens were hurting for wide receivers this offseason, but it might be curtains for Aldrick Robinson after the draft.Baltimore brought in the speedy wideout on a one-year deal, and he's a sneaky threat to make the roster and do some damage with quarterback Joe Flacco's cannon arm. But the Ravens drafted Breshad Perriman—another speedster—in the first round along with big project Darren Waller in the sixth, leaving Robinson on the fringe of the depth chart.Buffalo BillsBest Player Possibly Cut: QB EJ ManuelCould the Buffalo Bills really be thinking about cutting former first-round pick EJ Manuel after just two years? Joe Buscaglia of WKBW Buffalo thinks so:If former first-round pick and quarterback EJ Manuel doesn't show some serious progress this spring and summer at OTAs, minicamp and training camp, he very well may be enjoying his final few months in Buffalo as a member of the organization. It's a stunning revelation, and one that is met with questions like, "they wouldn't actually do that, would they?"Oh, they would, alright--as long as it's warranted. The "make or break" rhetoric used by the decision makers over at One Bills Drive when it comes to Manuel's third season in the league isn't just throwaway, clichéd football speak. They mean it.Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News tweeted that Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman said that report was the "furthest thing from the truth." It's not all that hard to believe a new regime would get rid of an ineffective quarterback, but it's not as if Matt Cassel is Tom Brady. Carolina PanthersBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Jarrett BoykinThe Panthers nabbed Jarrett Boykin once the Green Bay Packers let him go, but he might not be long for Carolina.Boykin showed some promise before being overtaken by Davante Adams last year, and he had a decent shot at some playing time with the Panthers when he signed.Carolina drafted big wideout Devin Funchess in the second round, however, and Boykin suddenly finds himself on the roster bubble. He'll need to hold off Corey Brown, Stephen Hill and Brenton Bersin for that last spot on the depth chart.Chicago BearsBest Player Possibly Cut: OLB Lamarr HoustonIt was a brutal first year in Chicago for Lamarr Houston, one that ended on a torn ACL suffered in celebration of a meaningless sack during a blowout loss to the New England Patriots.Chicago signed Houston to ostensibly replace Julius Peppers, but all he did was disappoint. Still recovering from his injury, Houston might not make it through the preseason.Part of that is the new management—general manager Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman aren't around anymore. But the Bears also made an effort to bolster the pass rush by signing Pernell McPhee to a big contract.Cincinnati BengalsBest Player Possibly Cut: DT Devon StillDevon Still's daughter, Leah, has been an inspiration in her fight against cancer. The NFL has rallied around the family to show support in many ways, and she was declared cancer-free just before her dad signed a one-year deal to come back to Cincinnati.Unfortunately, the big defensive tackle may not have a job with the Bengals for much longer.Cincinnati has a bit of a glut at defensive tackle behind starters Geno Atkins and Domata Peko. Not only did the Bengals re-sign Still to a one-year deal this offseason, but they also signed Pat Sims. Those two will battle Kwame Geathers, Brandon Thompson and DeShawn Williams for roster spots, meaning one or two of them might be on the outs. However, Still is talented enough to land on his feet if he does get cut.Cleveland BrownsBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Brian HartlineBrian Hartline is home again! But for how long? The Ohio native signed with the Cleveland Browns after the Miami Dolphins unceremoniously dumped him. At the time, he was a de facto starter with Josh Gordon suspended for a year and all.Fast-forward a couple of months, and Hartline's two-year deal seems far more tenuous than before. The Browns signed Dwayne Bowe to a bigger deal and Marlon Moore to a longer one, and they drafted Vince Mayle in the fourth round of this year's draft. With Taylor Gabriel, Andrew Hawkins and Travis Benjamin contending for roster spots, there may be no room for Hartline come September.Of course, the same could be said about a number of those wideouts.Dallas CowboysBest Player Possibly Cut: CB Morris Claiborne or Brandon CarrFor the most part, Morris Claiborne has been an abject disappointment in Dallas. It's at least part of the reason the Cowboys just drafted Byron Jones in the first round, a move that could ultimately cost Claiborne his job. They already elected to forgo his fifth-year option, per Cowboys.com writer David Helman. Of course, similar things could be said of Brandon Carr, who has been an expensive mistake for most of his time with the Cowboys. One of those guys could be cut this preseason. Their performance in the coming months could determine who goes and who stays.Denver BroncosBest Player Possibly Cut: OT Chris ClarkWho to choose from in Denver?Had rookie tight end Jeff Heuerman not torn his ACL in rookie minicamp, we might be looking at a hard choice between Owen Daniels and James Casey. We could slot Brandon McManus in here with Connor Barth potentially taking over as the place-kicker and newcomer Karl Schmitz as the potential kickoff specialist.Let's go with an offensive tackle instead.Chris Clark wasn't exactly effective last season in lieu of Orlando Franklin, who had moved to guard. With offensive tackle Ty Sambrailo as this year's second-round pick alongside 2014 third-rounder Michael Schofield, Clark's days may be numbered in Denver.Detroit LionsBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Ryan BroylesIt might be time for Ryan Broyles to move on from Detroit. The speedy wideout has never been able to get things going, largely due to injuries. He's had just 10 receptions over the past two seasons, and the Lions seem to be angling to replace him with signees Lance Moore and Greg Salas. But if he can stay healthy, Broyles could provide a deep threat for a needy team.Green Bay PackersBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Jeff JanisThere is a lot of love for Jeff Janis in the draftnik community, particularly from those who embrace metrics. That's because Janis was a metrics darling coming out of college, and he couldn't have landed in a better place than Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers running the offense.Unfortunately, metrics aren't everything, and Janis might not stay with the Packers for long. The former seventh-round pick is jockeying for position at the bottom of a crowded depth chart in Green Bay. The Packers drafted Ty Montgomery in the third round, presumably shunting Janis onto the bubble with 2014 fifth-rounder Jared Abbrederis and a host of 2015 undrafted rookie signees.Houston TexansBest Player Possibly Cut: DT Louis Nix IIIThis is admittedly far-fetched, but could the Houston Texans cut their losses with 2014 third-round pick Louis Nix after just one season?Considering the Texans didn't get anything out of him as a rookie and he heads into his second year in poor standing with his own head coach, that may be a possibility.Bill O'Brien said earlier this offseason that he'd like to see Nix just make it through a practice, per the Houston Chronicle's John McClain. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement. It's hard to imagine Nix has done anything to earn a pink slip just yet, but showing up to camp out of shape could doom him in Houston.Indianapolis ColtsBest Player Possibly Cut: S Winston GuyIf you had talked to Colts general manager Ryan Grigson a few months ago, you would have thought Winston Guy was a surefire bet to make the roster, perhaps even challenging to start. Here is what Grigson said of Guy a few months back, per Steve Andress of Colts.com:He’s a guy that started five games for Jacksonville (in 2013 and 2014), won that position in camp and the offseason, and was a former sixth-round pick of the Seahawks (in 2012). He impressed us all during the season on the practice squad, making plays day after day. He may have been our MVP (of the practice squad).Guy could well be on his way back to the practice squad instead of being cut outright, but it doesn't look like he will have a spot on the roster given the way things have shaken out in Indianapolis this offseason. The Colts signed Dwight Lowery and drafted Clayton Geathers in the fourth round, with Mike Adams, Colt Anderson and Dewey McDonald already in tow.Suddenly, things don't look so rosy for Guy.Jacksonville JaguarsBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Bernard PierceThere may have been something to Bernard Pierce's presence on the Jaguars roster, but that notion is all but gone.Jacksonville scooped him up after the Baltimore Ravens let him go due to his arrest for an alleged DUI, per ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley. He flashed his ability a couple of years ago, but he hadn't quite lived up to expectations he set in the 2012 NFL playoffs, when he averaged 5.2 yards per carry. When the Jaguars drafted T.J. Yeldon in the second round, however, it was all but curtains for Pierce. Barring an injury to Toby Gerhart, Denard Robinson, Storm Johnson or Yeldon this preseason, Pierce is merely a camp body.Kansas City ChiefsBest Player Possibly Cut: CB Marcus CooperIt wasn't that long ago that Marcus Cooper was starting at cornerback as a rookie. That was more out of necessity due to attrition than anything else, but he showed promise when thrown into the fire. Now, Cooper is going to have a tough time sticking on the roster altogether.Kansas City drafted Marcus Peters in the first round and Steven Nelson in the third, pushing Cooper well down the depth chart in the process. He and Jamell Fleming figure to be fighting for that last spot on the roster at cornerback as a result.Unless Cooper moves to safety and wins a spot there, he will probably be looking for a new gig this fall.Miami DolphinsBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Rishard MatthewsLet's pretend Dion Jordan doesn't exist in this scenario. The athletically gifted outside linebacker was banned for a year, and the Dolphins might just cut bait to get it over with. Since he is already suspended, though—much like Josh Gordon—let's focus elsewhere on that roster.Miami overhauled the receiver position in a big way this offseason, bringing Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings in and shipping out Mike Wallace via free agency or trade. The Dolphins also drafted DeVante Parker in the first round. All that movement leaves Rishard Mathews standing fifth in line at the position and disgruntled to boot. The former seventh-round pick is boycotting offseason workouts and seeking a trade after the flurry of moves, per Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald. It's more likely he'll just get cut.Minnesota VikingsBest Player Possibly Cut: CB Marcus SherelsMarcus Sherels may not have a spot on the roster in Minnesota, even though he can return punts. The sixth-year cornerback will be pushed out of the depth chart on defense after the addition of Terence Newman and incoming rookie Trae Waynes. The death knell to Sherels' time in Minnesota sounded when the Vikings took Stefon Diggs in the fifth round. In reality, any number of players can return punts for the Vikings. Without a role as a depth player on defense, Sherels will be left out to dry.New England PatriotsBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Brandon BoldenThings were looking up for Branden Bolden when Shane Vereen signed with the New York Giants. Then the Patriots deflated those hopes by signing Travaris Cadet and Dion Lewis this offseason.Bolden's role would have likely been limited to pass-catching duties—although you never know with head coach Bill Belichick—but both Lewis and Cadet can handle those responsibilities. With LeGarrette Blount, James White, Jonas Gray and perhaps James Develin ahead of him on the depth chart already, it's tough to see Bolden making the 53-man roster.New Orleans SaintsBest Player Possibly Cut: LB Dannell EllerbeThe New Orleans Saints acquired Dannell Ellerbe and a third-round pick as part of the trade that sent Kenny Stills to the Miami Dolphins. Chances are the third-rounder was more valuable than Ellerbe. He had been a disaster for the Dolphins, though he could bounce back with the Saints. He would also cost them $1.1 million in dead money if cut.It might be worthwhile to get rid of him if he continues his poor play this preseason, however. New Orleans drafted Stephone Anthony in the first round—who could step in and start right away—and there is plenty of comparable talent around Ellerbe.New York GiantsBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Rashad JenningsThis seems outlandish given how good Rashad Jennings looked when healthy last season, but I can't shake this nagging feeling that he might not be in New York much longer.Last season, the Giants drafted Andre Williams, who looked like a plodder for most of the way until coming alive late in the season. They might be planning to expand his role already, which would lessen the load on Jennings as a runner.Williams doesn't catch well out of the backfield, though, which is where Jennings really buttered his bread last season. Unfortunately for him, the Giants took away the loaf when they signed Shane Vereen, whose specialty also lies in pass-catching prowess. If Jennings has to battle injuries at all this preseason, the Giants might just move on. New York JetsBest Player Possibly Cut: CB Darrin WallsPoor Darrin Walls.A starter last year, Walls has been rendered obsolete by an aggressive offseason from new Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan. New York now boasts a secondary featuring new cornerbacks Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine.Former first-round pick Dee Milliner figures to lock down another spot on the depth chart, leaving the last one or two up for grabs between Dexter McDougle, Marcus Williams and Walls, among a few others. Considering how surprising Williams was last season and the fact McDougle was a third-round pick in 2014, Walls is going to be the man on the block.Oakland RaidersBest Player Possibly Cut: WR Andre HolmesEven after Oakland parted ways with James Jones, the Raiders will have some decisions to make at wide receiver in the coming months. That's because they signed Michael Crabtree and drafted Amari Cooper with the No. 4 pick in the 2015 draft. They join Rod Streater, Kenbrell Thompkins, Brice Butler, Andre Holmes, Seth Roberts and a few other rookies jockeying for depth chart positioning.Holmes led the team in receiving last season, but he was also the worst-rated wideout on the team, according to Pro Football Focus. That doesn't mean he's awful—Crabtree actually rated worse for the San Francisco 49ers—but his job is far from assured.Philadelphia EaglesBest Player Possibly Cut: OG Evan MathisWill he stay or go?Like with many Eagles players, rumors have swirled that Evan Mathis was on his way out in Philadelphia this offseason. Geoff Mosher wrote for CSNPhilly.com in March that Mathis might get cut if the Eagles weren't able to trade him, and so far one part of that equation has come true.He might be 33, but Mathis has performed at a high level for years. He was the second-best guard in the entire league last season as rated by Pro Football Focus.Still, head coach Chip Kelly has proved to be downright capricious with roster management sometimes, and there is too much smoke around Mathis to think this isn't possible. Pittsburgh SteelersBest Player Possibly Cut: OT Mike AdamsMike Adams hasn't parlayed his physical gifts into a productive NFL career thus far with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 6'7", 323-pound monster out of Ohio State played in just six games last season, even though he was active for the entire season. He just hasn't been able to get anything going in Pittsburgh, and he may be on his way out if he has another bad preseason like he had a year ago.Of course, who could resist such a physical freak of nature as a backup?San Diego ChargersBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Donald BrownIt didn't take long for the Chargers to fill Ryan Mathews' shoes.San Diego took Melvin Gordon with the 15th overall pick in the draft, and he should be the starter from Day 1. Behind him are Branden Oliver, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown to vie for roster spots.Brown signed a three-year deal a year ago, but that won't be much of an impediment if the Chargers decide they don't need him. After all, he was overtaken by Oliver, who was an undrafted rookie last year. With Woodhead back from injury to resume his role as a third-down back, Brown is the logical choice to get squeezed off the roster in that backfield.San Francisco 49ersBest Player Possibly Cut: P Andy LeeWhy would the 49ers cut one of the best punters in the league over the past decade?Simple—you don't take a punter in the fifth round if you don't plan on keeping him. That's what San Francisco did in selecting Bradley Pinion out of Clemson. It doesn't help that Lee has the fifth-highest average salary at his position, not to mention he lost 1.4 yards per punt on his average last season. He will also be 33 before the season begins.Granted, he was still sixth in the league at 46.8 yards per punt, but simple economics might force him out.Seattle SeahawksBest Player Possibly Cut: CB Will BlackmonThe Seahawks went to work immediately to replace Byron Maxwell after he took the money and ran to Philadelphia in free agency.Seattle signed Cary Williams and Will Blackmon away from the Eagles and Jaguars, respectively. The latter only got a one-year deal, however, while the former signed a three-year deal worth $18 million. The biggest saving grace for Blackmon might be Jeremy Lane's injuries in the Super Bowl, where he tore his ACL in one of the worst injuries in championship game history. Lane may not be back until midseason, if at all, which could keep a roster spot open for Blackmon.Even if that is the case, he will still need to fight Tharold Simon, Marcus Burley, Steven Terrell and fifth-round rookie Tye Smith for a roster spot.St. Louis RamsBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Isaiah PeadThis could be Isaiah Pead's last hurrah. The former second-round pick has 17 carries to his name in his three-year career, a bitter disappointment for a variety of reasons. The clock started on his tenure with the Rams once Todd Gurley was announced as the No. 10 pick. That isn't to say Pead wouldn't be useful, but Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham and a host of undrafted rookies are going to make it difficult for him to stick on the roster. Injuries have been part of Pead's problem, and he could turn things around if he can stay healthy.Tampa Bay BuccaneersBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Doug MartinCould we be in for a shocker of a roster cut in Tampa Bay?The Buccaneers haven't exactly shown a lot of love to the artist formerly known as Muscle Hamster, not since Lovie Smith took over as the head coach. Martin was benched early in the season, and he has had miserable production when he has been healthy over the past two years.Bobby Rainey and Mike James performed admirably—to varying degrees—in his stead last season, and second-year back Charles Sims has a lot of promise and hype behind him. Tennessee TitansBest Player Possibly Cut: RB Lache SeastrunkThe backfield isn't particularly exciting in Tennessee.Bishop Sankey, Shonn Greene and David Cobb might be the most plodding trio in the NFL, but it doesn't look like any of them will be displaced among the top three on the depth chart. Least of all Sankey—the first running back off the board in the 2014 draft—despite a lackluster rookie season. Adding Dexter McCluster to the mix doesn't exactly spice things up, either.Lache Seastrunk could actually be more talented than some of the guys ahead of him, but he needs too much development to catch them on the depth chart. Update: Seastrunk was apparently cut by the Titans just a day before this article was published, unbeknownst to the writer as several sites still had him on the team at the time of his writing.WashingtonBest Player Possibly Cut: CB Tracy PorterThe cornerback position will be an interesting one to watch in Washington this summer.Chris Culliver was a big addition in free agency, and veteran DeAngelo Hall will be back from injury. Bashaud Breeland showed out at times as a rookie last season, and David Amerson should get another shot at significant playing time in his third season. If it all pans out that way, that leaves Tracy Porter clawing for the fifth spot on that depth chart. The hero of Super Bowl XLIV—which seems like a lifetime ago—might be looking for work come August if the preseason doesn't go his way. All contract information courtesy of OverTheCap.com.link
