HOPEFULLY MY EDIT DOESN’T CAUSE THIS TO GET EATEN
So I figured I’d check into how Defense DVOA and Coverage Grade correlate vs Pass Rush correlation.
My hypothesis is “in the modern NFL, there will be a tighter correlation to Coverage Grade than Pass Rush Grade.”
2018 Results for top DVOA
This team’s DVOA was FAR beyond the rest of the pack.
* 95.9 Elite Coverage Grade (best in league)
* 75.4 Good Pass Rush Grade
TOP 3 DVOA
* All 3 with Elite Coverage Grades of 88.8 or better
* 3 Good Pass Rush Grades from low to mid 70s.
TOP 10 DVOA
* 9/10 with Elite Coverage Grades with 85.3 being the lowest. The only one that didn’t (# 10) had a very good 81.5 Coverage Grade, but they also had the most effective (Efficiency and explosiveness and conversion rate) running game in the league.
* All 10 teams from high 60s (Above Average) to mid/high 70s (Good) Pass Rush Grades.

Hypothesis looks pretty sound at this point.
Another strong line of evidence?
* The team with the best Pass Rush Grade (almost 90) was ranked # 26 inDefense DVOA. Their Coverage Grade was mid 70s.
