Well at the time when you had Ware, Spencer, Ratliff and Hunter you might have thought you had the guys for his scheme...plus Lee at LB. The problem is of those guyts only one played all the year and most of them missed most of the year. Kiffin was juggling guys in and out and it looked exactly like our early years with the one gap system did - guys would not play their jobs and allows some huge plays.
Monte's defense has been awful for YEARS. I used to think he was a lock at one point for Canton but he has tarnished a great career by sticking around too long. USC was god awful and so were the Boys. Monte has LOST it. I wouldn't want him anywhere near a defense. Quite sad.
I know. He's an old school coach who can't adapt. Now when he had players who fit his schemes he was a genius but without those players and without the ability to adapt he is just an old coach who probably should have gotten out of coaching after the Superbowl. After they blew up his team.
Someone posted that he still had the number one D in 2005. Great players make great coaches no doubt but he's had some great players and stunk out loud. I have a feeling that he may have some issues.

About as laughable as you thinking Asst HC is a demotion from DC.
Jerry knows Marinelli would bail if he just fired Kiffin, so he gave him a new title. Who knows exactly what Monte will do or how he'll like his new job. Maybe he'll be an intemediary between Garrett and Marinelli...
I would say that 75% of the problem is personnel.

I'm not sure I get this US - why would we use a "purebread" Tampa-2 (whatever that actually is), when Lovie didn't use one in Chicago? And I'm not sure I understand you take on Marinelli - first of all, he was terrible in Detroit, but go back and look at the defensive personnel as well. In Chicago, he was the DC for the 4th, 4th, and 1st ranked defenses (according to Football Outsiders). In Dallas, his work with a tattered DL was one of the few bright spots on the entire D.

Assistant coaches have less responsibility. They aren't directly in charge of anything. Its most definitely a demotion.
