Only problem with this is your basing your decision off of his contract year.

at least we have you recognizing a different potential "end game."  lol

You've moved on to 'they will just make a dumb decision in the future" but at least we've moved on from this:

"I don't see what the end game here is. "

Marcus Jones door: He balls out and gets a big contract that he isn't worth. This is the most disastrous outcome.

Gaines Adams door: Realize he's a bust and get whatever you can for him. In this case it was pick #64. This is the best outcome.

Kwon Alexander door: Let him walk and get a 4th round comp pick. We get the least compensation and waste the 2023 cap space on him.

Look at you . .  now there is not only a previously unseen end game, but it has THREE doors!!

And none of them include him being a good player on a 2nd contract. So again, why the hell is he still on the team

They would apparently receive a 3rd round compensatory pick if White walks as a free agent.  Maybe that's what you are talking about, because if he walks next offseason the comp pick wouldn't come until the following draft- 2025.  So as a result it doesn't make any sense to trade White for anything less than a 2nd rounder.   If you trade him for a 3rd rounder in this draft, sure it's two years sooner but then you don't get his services for this year and you have to spend a draft pick on a linebacker this year.  So I've said either pay him or trade him this year rather than let him walk for nothing, but it only makes sense if you can get at least a 2nd round pick or better because they will get the comp pick.

i understand the CP's process.

it's how you all think it's guaranteed we'll receive 3rd rd compensation for Devin and not a 5th or 6th rd, or we don't sign a big FA next year and lose the CP...

it was the same thing with Mike Glennon, i was on the bandwagon who didn't want to trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick cause you know QB gets paid in FA and we should receive a high CP... and then he sign with the Bears for a contract worth 3rd rd value in the CP (great!!!), but Licht sign DeSean Jackson for a big contract too and the CP is gone (not so great)!

+ we're all like "hey we all see, Devin's not worth $18-20M!" but some of you can guarantee the NFL guys who watch tapes wont see the same issue and spend $20M/year?

imo, unless Devin shine this year, there is more chances to see him in a Saints uniform in 2024 on a $8-10M one-year prove it deal than becoming the highest paid LB in the League.

i'll take the "trade him now" bandwagon over any waiting approach for a non-guaranteed CP. (+ you can create some needed cap space in the process)

I don't see what the end game here is. 4 years of film prove that he's not a good player despite elite traits. Now he's being malcontent. If he has a great year to get the $100M contract it's fool's gold. GM's get into bad contract because they evaluate players just on contract years and it's a false reading. The only thing White provides at this point is whatever draft capital he can yield back. But Licht has his head so far up his ass he's not going to be proactive here.

That's the question of the day - what is the end game.

For Licht I think it's pretty simple and straight forward.  Licht isn't going to make the call on his top ten pick before his rookie contract is done.  He gave Winston and OJ Howard their full time and then made the decision about whether to keep them or not.  He's doing the same with White.  Let him play out his rookie deal and then make the decision to give him a 2nd contract or not.  If they don't, they'll get the comp pick.  No haggling.  No trade.  Not complicated. Even if at the end it costs the Bucs more money, they're just going to let it play out.

Only problem with this is your basing your decision off of his contract year. It's a terrible thing to do. Bucs had a similar situation with Marcus Jones. After 4 years you knew he wasn't the guy. In his contract year he was unblockable. He signed an extension that is equivalent to $20M per year today. He had 3 sacks the next year and the Bucs ended up cutting him.

I'm not saying it's the smart thing to do.  I just think that's what Licht is doing.   Perhaps it's about more than just Devin White.  It's about Licht having principals about how he operates.  He's not going to trade a first round pick before his contract is up just because he demands it.

I have seen multiple articles that think we can get a 2nd rounder for White.  If we can get a 2nd rounder, it's a no brainer.  The cap savings alone make it a no brainer.  I hope Licht is just trying to keep leverage and a deal happens during the draft.

I also have seen multiple articles by "EXPERTS" saying that the Bucs could get a high draft pick for White. None of these "EXPERTS" are running NFL teams. They are full of it and most of their articles are pure fiction. Until another team calls the Bucs and actually offer a high draft pick, then White isn't going anywhere this coming season.

Problem with your logic, and the Bucs situation in general, is that Licht himself valued White as being worth the #5 overall pick in the draft. So even if a team offered a pick somewhere between 40-60 Licht still might believe he's worth more.

The reason you want to trade DW now is so his replacement can start training in 2023 alongside LVD and not next year.  Personally I think Bowles likes DW but not to the point he disrupts what Bowles is trying to build on defense.  Bowles wants interchangeable pieces on the front seven and the backend.  So, I am pretty sure Bowles knows about DW limitations which is why Licht and Bowles would be okay to have him play out his contract. But right now there is no way they hand him a second contract regardless of how he performs in 2023.

So based on that I think the team may try to trade him afterall and continue the youth infusion into the front seven and backend of the defense.

Not gonna happen.  We all wanted them to trade OJ Howard and that didn't happen.  Licht is the one who does the trading. Licht wants White to play out his contract, and that's what will happen.   You can argue all day about the merits of trading him, but it's all for nothing because Licht won't do it.

Bowles overvalues White more than anyone in the building.

I mean, numerous times, boasting that he’s the “2nd best player on that defense”.

Embarrassing

Will you ever learn your lesson about definitively proclaiming what will or will not happen with things you have absolutely no control over?

I’m pretty sure Bowles was the reason he was drafted in the first place. All of his comments since then have only confirmed that for me.
