Just leaves a bitter taste the way it was done. I'm sure some people can get over it and I certainly can but people don't forget.

Dude this guy... Cheese
but Coen didn't really do anything wrong.
Definitely time to move on and forget about it, but he absolutely did something wrong and it was intentional.
He lied to both parties to enrich himself and he knew what he was doing because he lied and kept his trip secret. He's no innocent.
When the Bucs say whats your number the honest response would be, "I dont have one yet because I want t see about my HC opportunities first." He did NOT give that honest response though because IF he was to complete the Jags interviews and NOT get the job he would have lost all the leverage that got the Bucs to ask him about his number, making him the highest paid OC etc.
So, rather than HONELY bear that risk himself, he put it on the Bucs and he even used the Bucs because by LYING about his acceptance of the condition (no second interview) he got the Bucs to announce the deal. That then gave him the leverage he used against the Jags.
Even if you try to say well the circumstances changed because they fired Baalke . . then the easy response is that the HONEST thing would be to go to the Bucs first and let them know he was going to the 2nd interview. He lied about that though because he wanted to keep the leverage of the $4.5 million deal to use against the Jags.
Good for him. Lots of way to write that off, downplay it, justify it . . "they all do it" . . etc, but it is actually intentional deception.
He and his agent knew what they were doing. The agent even called the Bucs FO and put them off. Coen called Bowles after he had alreayd met with Khan to let him know he was thinking abut it. The Jags stayed silent to compete a Rooney Rule interview.
I'm thankful that Coen came to Tampa and demonstrated what is possible with the Bucs offensive personnel. It's a shame we don't get the opportunity to see what could have come to fruition in year two of the Coen offense.
As for Coen, Khan, and the Jags, I hope they get what they deserve. A three win season in 2025, and a mid-season firing in 2026. May they continue to tread water and barely keep their nose above it.
GO BUCS!

i mean it hurts because we were on the receiving end of being used but 99% of us would have done the same exact thing in that situation. Coen needed to sign on the dotted line with the Jaguars. You never quit a job before you execute the new employment agreement, do you? You may have been 99% confident you were getting it but picture this
You currently make $250,000.
You get offered another job at $350,000 but dont have the agreement executed yet. You bring this to your company and they say, well we can do $275,000 but Rebecca is retiring in a year and once her job opens up, you will have the fast track to that position. You know we had a down year or else we would get you to that compensation now, yada yada yada
The other company is still working out some kinks but you are 99% certain. Well, why not take the payraise now? You'd be foolish to quit before you executed the $350K deal.
You never quit a job before you execute the new employment agreement, do you?
No need to do that here. It was an opportunity for a promotion, not a lateral move.
He wouldn't have to quit the Bucs or have been fired. He just would have done what most coordinators do. He would've gone for an interview.
In fact, if he goes for the Jags interview and they offer him the HC job he can even go back to the Bucs and get their best HC offer. The OC position might have been it from the Bucs, but at least then it is all above board.
Thats why I was pointing out it was not about anything BUT THE MONEY and that why he went to INTENTIONALLY leveraging his situation by deception.
He doesn't get the same $ opportunity WITH EITHER TEAM without the lying.
Again, worth moving on from. They both deserve each other lol. The Jags lied too.
The one innocent possibility is that Coen did not want the Bucs HC job because he had too much respect for Bowles to take it from him. If you look at his statement after he gets the Jags job he specifically thanks Bowles for his "CONTINUED" support.
By every account I have ever read, Bowles is very much a stand up guy, supportive of his players an coaches, so maybe that is it.
or, it was understood by everyone that the Bucs HC job was NOT on the table.

im pretty sure the head coaching job was not on the table
i am sure that was discussed between Coen and Licht as well. Had to be....like hey im looking at head coaching opportunities and you got a mediocre one here.
and i am sure as the offense was top 5 all year that the Bucs had a long time to think about this. We all knew after Canales that Coen would be a hot commodity this year. I had my hopes that a team wouldn't do it but i was in denial
The Bucs knew there would be reputational damage by firing Bowles, who for all intents and purposes has had the Bucs performing above expectations post Brady. Now again, much of us will point to Baker Mayfield (although some were in denial in 2023, even suggest Trask could perform just as well - what a hot take that didnt age well) and the top 5 offense in 2024 led again by Baker and Coens improved play calling. BUT, it still happened with Todd as head coach.
If Bucs fired Bowles after 3 straight playoff appearances and division titles and quite frankly low expectations post Brady, then yeah other coaches would look at Dungy, Arians, and Bowles and be like...damn...nothings good enough for that franchise. (que the Arians wasn't forced out crowd and just had a epiphany to retire suddenly when Brady returned) It wouldt be good and the players would feel Bowles got a raw deal. I dont thin it would have played out well for us.
The Bucs gave their best shot at it but we were simply used by Coen for him to get his way in Jacksonville by firing the GM.
sure, i am rooting against Coen. Fuck him, he's no longer a Buc...but can't hate the player...gotta hate the game. This was about 2 things - Head coach and money...and we couldn't give him either.
i am sure that was discussed between Coen and Licht as well
the reporting is still that Licht is "furious" with Coen, a point Coen pretty much concedes in an interview
“And I want Jason to be good with it,” Coen said. “I love Jason. Those guys gave me an opp! I’ll never forget that. But time heals. Time heals. We’ll be all right.”
I dont see Licht as some hyper-emotional irrational person so more likely than not he has a reason to be "furious" and that would NOT just be that Coen got a better job.
I dont remember any fire directed at Canales? Maybe? I certainly do not remember Canales saying he hopes Licht gets over it lol

while Dockey Hunter loved Canales, he was an ok coordinator. He looked hall of fame compared to Lefty but he was replaceable. None of us were worried about his departure and in fact many of us were surprised he got a head coaching job
to me the Coen hurts because the offense was elite. Name a non brady left offense that was elite for this franchise? You'd be grasping at straws.
Coen didnt handle it well but i keep coming back to $12 million a year and head coach, as Coen even said; It was a foregone conclusion he was gone.
NOW...Licht is upset because it made him look like a Buffon and with the news coming out, really screwed over the fan base emotions. It made the Bucs look foolish and that why he was upset.
BUT....if the Bucs knew the numbers being thrown around by Jacksonville they should have known it was unfinished business. Could see if Jacksonville was offering Coen 4-5M per year and we matched...but to nearly triple our number...not sure why we would think we'd keep him
suppose we will never know but would have loved to be a fly on the wall for Coens first Jaguars interview and also the Bucs meeting agreeing to make him highest paid OC
Petrino quitting mid season was much worse. Coen just had to man up and say he wasn't done with jacksonville, either way the teams gonna be somewhat pissed at you, but at least you respect it.

Licht looks the fool so he's right to be bad.
Coen is right, time heals all wounds.
I do think Coen LONG TERM would have been better off waiting a year and taking over in Tampa but 12m/year?
Money talks. That's 3x what we offered. He's gotta take care of his family so I'm not angry there.
How he handled it was juvenile but I'm over it now. After seeing the duval video I'm starting to wonder if he is head coach material. Time will tell. He's a goof.
He didn't handle it well, but he was probably under strict instructions from the Jaguars not to say anything. So I'm guessing he was caught in a Catch 22 - if he talks to Licht he pisses off his prospective employer and possibly doesn't get hired, and if he doesn't tell Licht whats going on obviously he burns his bridges there. He chose to not piss off his future employer and ended up with a sweet deal. If that's what happened then I can't say I blame him too much.i am sure that was discussed between Coen and Licht as well

This is why he lied to both sides and why Licht is rightfully mad.
All water under the bridge now, but we offered to make him the highest paid COORDINATOR and he leveraged that ANNOUNCED deal to be the 2nd highest paid HC
Maybe he's more Ben Johnson than Aaron Glenn. I guess we will see . . .. DOOOOOOOOOVVVALLLLL
