It's the same paint with the exception of some airbrush darker pewter accents around the earhole and on the ridges from the hairline back to the crown.

I read about the hand painted darker areas, but I never saw anything about it being the same exact pewter as before. You got a link?Wouldn't be a total surprise if it is though. They changed it a few years back. I think it was when Nike took over, or maybe even before that. The helmets have definitely been less brown the last few years. I just wish they'd have done away with the metal flake paint job. It has zero to do with pewter and metal flake doesn't exactly scream pirates either.

On Buccaneers.com the helmet looks like a gun metal in the pics with the black background. So I dunno. If they look anything like the last pic of DJ's and it's not just the lighting then I'm damn good with the new helmets/logo.

Keeping the trademark pewter doesn't mean they didn't tweak it at all. The mention of a "darker pewter" in this quote shows that they know there is more than one tint of the same color. It certainly looks lighter to me. Could be the silver outlines and Chrome mask that make it appear lighter though....We won't know for sure I guess until we see it in the sun , I guess.
I think even if it is the old pewter, it's not the same pewter from 1996. They changed it up a few years back and I think it changes it's look depending on the light and colors around it. I think it will look good with greay pewter unis instead of brown. Or maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into it so I don't jump off the skyway when they reveal more brown ugly jerseys. More importantly, what do the new cheerleader unis look like?! I hear they get new bike riding shorts.
