5 Dark-Horse Candidates to Make Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Final 53 Man Roster By Luke Easterling Jul 5, 2015 Patrick McDermott/Getty Images With training camp on the horizon, Tampa Bay Buccaneers are starting to focus their attention on which players will be challenging for the final few spots on the team's final 53-man roster heading into the 2015 season. The Bucs improved their depth at multiple positions this offseason, which could make it more difficult for returning players to keep firm grips on their roster spots. Waiver-wire pickups, late-round draft picks and returning role players from last season will all battle in training camp for one of those last coveted spots.Who are the dark-horse candidates who could surprise in training camp and snatch a roster spot?CB Brandon Dixon
Jeff Haynes/Associated Press Tampa Bay has fairly strong depth and experience at corner on the outside with Johnthan Banks, Alterraun Verner and Mike Jenkins, but that doesn't mean a surprising young cover man won't sneak in and grab a roster spot.Brandon Dixon appeared in 14 games in his rookie season for the Bucs in 2014, tallying nine tackles, two defensed passes and an interception, coming on particularly strong over the last five games of the season. The Northwest Missouri State product has already grabbed the attention of the coaching staff, performing well when called upon due to injuries throughout the secondary later in the season.Don't be surprised if Dixon turns in an impressive performance during training camp, locking up a spot on the final 53-man roster.DE T.J. Fatinikun
Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports It's no secret the Bucs have lacked an explosive edge-rusher in recent years, but they may have a diamond in the rough waiting in the wings.T.J. Fatinikun is undersized at just 6'2", 250 pounds, but as teammate Akeem Spence points out, he has the explosiveness to make an impact as a pass-rusher this season, per Scott Reynolds of PewterReport.com:“ He’s not very big, but man is he explosive off the edge. He’s a Tasmanian devil. He never slows down. He’s 100 miles per hour, 24-7. I love T.J. He’s done nothing but get better every time I see him. He’s beaten guys like Demar Dotson and Anthony Collins when he was here. That little dude has done nothing but get better. He’s a great asset to our team. Keep an eye on him.”The Bucs didn't do much to address their need at defensive end this offseason, and the potential of "that little dude" might have something to do with that. Look for him to make the final roster and be given an opportunity to get plenty of action on passing downs in the regular season.P Spencer Lanning
Jason Miller/Getty Images Many Bucs fans expected the team to move on from punter Michael Koenen last offseason, but they kept him around for another season, and he failed to impress in 2014.This time around, he'll have another challenger in training camp in Spencer Lanning, who was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Browns this offseason.Lanning posted higher averages than Koenen last season, dropping 25 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard-line, compared to just 17 for Koenen. At just 25 years old, Lanning is younger and cheaper than Koenen, who is scheduled to make $3.25 million this season, according to Spotrac. It wouldn't shock me at all if this is the year the Bucs finally go in a different direction with their punting duties, hoping to improve their ability to win the field position battle in 2015 and beyond with Lanning booting the ball on fourth downs.LB Orie Lemon
Reinhold Matay/Associated Press The Bucs added a pair of linebackers this offseason—one in free agency, the other in the fourth round of the draft—but Bruce Carter and Kwon Alexander aren't the only ones who will help bolster the team's depth at that position this year.Orie Lemon appeared in the final 10 games of the 2014 season, making his mark mostly on special teams. But he also showed promise in limited snaps on defense, ending the season with 23 total tackles and making three starts at linebacker.Injuries are inevitable in the NFL, and Lemon proved last year he can be a valuable contributor when called upon to jump into the starting lineup. I expect the strong impression he made last year to carry over into this year's training camp, culminating with him earning a spot on the final roster.RB Joey Iosefa
Wilfredo Lee/Associated Press It's been quite a while since the Bucs have had a true power back who can pick up the tough ground in short-yardage situations, but they may have found their man in the seventh round of this year's draft.Averaging 4.3 yards per carry during his career at Hawaii, Joey Iosefa is a physical runner between the tackles who can also make plays as a receiver out of the backfield, catching 60 passes over his 29 starts. Despite playing in just six games as a senior in 2014, Iosefa racked up 643 yards on the ground and tied for the team lead with eight rushing touchdowns.Veteran Jorvorskie Lane showed flashes of brilliance last season, but he's coming off a broken leg that ended his 2014 campaign prematurely. Iosefa's versatility to be both a lead blocker at fullback as well as a short-yardage ball-carrier and check-down option in the passing game could easily give him the nod over Lane on the final roster.link
