Rush Limbaugh has some thoughts on RG3. (Getty Images) Conservative commentator, football fan and short-lived ESPN NFL studio analyst Rush Limbaugh has some thoughts on why Robert Griffin III has been so heavily scrutinized in recent years, and apparently it has little to do with Griffinn's on-field struggles.“RGIII, the quarterback — don't know for how long — of the Washington Redskins, came into the league amidst great fanfare,” Limbaugh said, via CBSDC.com. “First-round draft choice. Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Redskins, traded up to get RG3, and he's had some injuries and he just hasn't maxed his potential.“Well, some people think he's bombed. And the media, it's kind of strange, because here we have an African-American quarterback and yet the media has been kind of mean to RG3. And one of the reasons is that it's suspected that RG3 is a Republican."Seems reasonable.In related news: Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, future first-ballot Hall of Famer beloved by all, has donated to Republican senators and presidential candidates' campaigns for years. Oddly, no one ever brings that up when talking about his likeability or, more importantly, his ability to play football.So why was Limbaugh discussing Griffin at all? The Redskins quarterback gave a speech to the United Nations General Assembly last week about protecting the Earth's oceans. The implication, presumably, is that a Republican wouldn't advocate for such things. (Which would mean that any criticism directed towards RG3 has to do with football, right?)“So in light of all of that, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was among the many celebrities — including Samuel L. Jackson — to address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday to advocate for the protection of the earth's oceans," Limbaugh explained, before pointing out that, “We couldn't destroy the ocean if we tried, just like we could not destroy the ozone if we tried.”Meanwhile, we're pretty sure that former Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell isn't blaming the environment or Griffin's political leanings (whatever they may be) when he says the fourth-year quarterback "has gone backwards" in his football development.
