No shit. It was just a thought - not necessarily saying it was a legit option, nobody knows besides the people in the draft room. There were two teams yesterday that snuck back into the first round that we could've made a deal with potentially in ATL and NYG. Obviously we could not and therefore went BPA.i dont understand the pick. The best course of action was to trade down, stock pile picks and address the side that cost us games.
I really hate when fans say, "We should have traded down"
You can't just call the commish and say, "we want to trade down, we think that's the best course of action". You have to have teams willing to trade up and give you what you think is fair in return.
The teams that draft the best are always teams that don't reach for need. The draft BPA in the first round and often that works out in the long run. We have 2 highly paid, aging WRs both coming off injury plagued seasons. Hamstrings don's get better with age and Godwin's ankle/leg injury was severe.
The Bucs will add some defensive players that will help fill those needs in the next few rounds.
Our depth at wr last year took a hit when both Mike and Godwin were hurt. I think they were still solid but I think we want that position to be at its best because it's so important for our success. We have a high powered offense partly because we have such good talent there. If we want to make sure the offense doesn't skip a beat if someone goes down. Have someone else there just as capable.
I think if we didn't have those injuries offense is so much better down the line in the season with the continuity and consistency they have. If they can stay healthy even better because then they make sure their fresh and can create a ton of mismatches as a result of that. Wearing defenses down with that and bucky. Just go defense heavy the rest of the way.
Our CB depth took a hit too, and Dean is the least reliable starter on the team in terms of health and production. Barron went one pick after Egbuka, who would've fit the need + value for this team. Seeing as Dean is penciled in to miss at least a month worth of football due to injury, I'm looking forward to who the Bucs draft today. That kid will have plenty of snaps to show his worth once the inevitable happens.
@bucman - By the way, just checked with AI - Chris Godwins drops were just below 6% over his 7 year NFL career.Egbuka? Dude rarely drops a ball, and when he drops the scouts think it is because he’s thinking through his route plan before securing the ball.hes not and he has by far the highest drop rate of the top WRs. 5% is brutal
Emeka’s hands are elite.
In fact, if you’re using drop-to-reception ratio than Tet (5.3%) is only slightly ahead of Egbuka (5.8%), while Luther Burden (7.3%) and Golden (10.4%), had far more drops on fewer receptions.
In that context, 5% doesn’t sound so brutal, to me?
On the bright side though, this pick should limit the wear and tear of Godwin/Evans this fall. Seems like neither WR are never fully healthy at the end of the year but reality is everyone is playing hurt. Hopefully we use the rookie early and on so we can get production of the pick and then able to roll out a fresh Evans/Godwin at the end.

Exactly. Folks are forgetting their age and the need to sit some plays for the betterment of the playoffs run.

I hate the egbuka pick. He’s a solid player, so it’s not a bad pick. I think there are talented players on defense we could have drafted.
nfl network just said that they believe both the Texans and rams were trying to trade up for egbuka.
I actually like the pick of Egbuka! In the present he provides the team and Baker insurance if Godwin is not 100% healthy to start the season - if Godwin is healthy - Egbuka provides the team a luxury - allowing them to place Evans and Godwin on a snap count to start the season so they are healthier down the stretch. And, he provides insurance should McMillan regress. Finally, the long term future looks good and insulates the team should Evans retire or leave after the season. And, if Godwin does not regain form. They have his clone already on the team.
Yeah, it’s a shock - everybody wants BPA, so long as we’re using our own player rankings.I hate the egbuka pick. He’s a solid player, so it’s not a bad pick. I think there are talented players on defense we could have drafted.

As has been pointed out by several poster’s, Egbuka was the BPA on Jason Licht’s board. And the context you posted that at least two offensively-minded NFL teams had him ranked similarly - means this was a significant pick. One of those teams runs a similar offense that ours is based on.
Grizzard has to be happy.
Who should we have taken instead? When I look at the rest of Round 1 I don't see guys who I really think the Bucs missed out on. Maybe a couple guys later on like Starks or Hairston. Campbell didn't go until the end of the round and EZ wasn't picked at all. If you look at the rest of the round I am not awestruck. I don't say to myself "OMG how could we pass on all those guys!" Guys still there in the 2nd round were obviously 2nd round talent not Pick 19 talent.
I'm just not blown away with the talent. Let's grab the UCLA LB imo.
The edge rushers in this draft are just projects

Easily Pearce or Campbell

This is why the whole BPA v Need discussion is a bit of a farce.
I'll agree with Campbell, but I think the Eagles can afford to wait patiently for him to heal up. They just won the Superbowl. The Bucs can't afford to draft a player who's first year could be a wash but a Superbowl winner has the leeway to deal with that.Who should we have taken instead?
