We are not going to find a quality OC candidate who will come to this team knowing that Bowles is a lameduck HC and his QB is going to be Trask. We need wholesale changes going into post Brady era.

But knowing this team we will trot the same staff out there next year and expect different results.

Dan Campbell was able to find a guy like Ben Johnson when he was on the hot seat. Those creative guys are out there, you just have to find them.

With that said, I think Bowles has to go. But it’s not impossible to find a great OC, even when he’s on the hot seat.

Need to get rid of Bowles too. We all know why they won't is money. At least they got a super bowl with Brady in the first season at home. Now seems like it will return to dark times again but hopefully not. Would be nice to keep the winning train going here. That part has been exciting. We are lucky we have had the chance to see some great teams here when we are good. Not all teams have had that luxury.

Of course the whole staff needs to go.

Bruce wasn’t holding anyone’s hands this time around and now you see the results.

10-13 win team with Bruce still at the helm.

Instead, he gifted a talented squad to a pair of incompetent jackasses and this is what we get.

Byron will most likely get the boot in the next 24-48 hours…which is about 8-10 weeks too late.

Bowles will be retained. And, the incompetence will continue for one more season.

Personally, if I’m in charge, I can everyone on that coaching staff if Brady wants to give it one last shot.

Otherwise, keep every coach, trot out Trask, clear as much cap as possible, and be in contention for #1 overall pick in 2024. Could be an attractive option for an offensive-minded HC.

Brady gave it one last shot. If the 8-9 team is really a 10-13 win team (lol) then he is coming back.

Early in the season, Bowles came under some heat for clock management because HE was going to run out the clock late in a half and pinned back, especially after a failed run on 1st down. On second down Brady threw the ball long for a completion (could've easily been a pick).

At the PC Bowles acknowledged that he want to run out the clock, but that Brady had the go ahead to throw "if he saw something."

That Brady. The guy who had the power to overrule the head coach's plan IF HE SAW SOMETHING (even deep in our end)? That Brady somehow decided   . . as the team contemplated firing Leftwich, no less   ..  THAT BRADY decided to just "go quietly into that good night" and watched the coaches pull his 10-13 win team out from under him?

Alternatively, here's Brady telling Leftwich "No" and calling his own play

and allegedly taking control of the offense against the Panthers

and re-writing the game plasns?

HOW DO WE GET THAT TOM BRADY BACK?

This from PR might be the best explanation of the Bucs offense:

"Yet, some at the team’s AdventHealth Training Center believe the Bucs offense simply out-talented opposing defenses from 2020-21 and Leftwich, who was a finalist for the Jacksonville head coaching job this past offseason, was the beneficiary of that.

With the likes of 1,000-yard receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, a future Hall of Fame tight end Rob Gronkowski and an explosive and mercurial receiver with Hall of Fame credentials in Antonio Brown, the Bucs simply had more weapons than opposing defenses could cover. Throw in the best quarterback at making pre-snap reads and finding the ideal matchup before the ball is snapped and it was nearly impossible for defenses to shut down all four talented playmakers at once.

As a result, the Bucs had one of the most dangerous passing games in the league for nearly two years, with Brady throwing 83 touchdowns from 2020-21. But when Brown quit on the team late last year, Gronkowski and Pro Bowl left guard Ali Marpet retired, and Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen missed the regular season, Leftwich’s offense couldn’t simply out-talent the opposition.

Instead, the Bucs needed Leftwich to scheme Evans and Godwin, who was coming off a torn ACL from late in the 2021 season, open and get more creative with the play-calling. Both Bowles and Brady wanted the Bucs to run the ball more and be more balanced on offense after Brady led the league in pass attempts and completions in 2021 at age 44. None of that happened, and the Bucs struggled with predictable play-calling, which led to poor third down and red zone efficiency as a result."

@bucsbits - I understand what you’re saying here, but this offensive system was a mess. Besides Mahomes and a few other current superstar quarterbacks, who has success under center this year? Not many? No imagination. No route combinations working to get receivers open. No running game of any kind. A very porous offensive line. Yea, has Brady fallen back some with age… absolutely. But there weren’t many QBs succeeding in this offense this year.

Oh I agree.

I think that is basically what PR says.  That there was a marked drop in offensive talent and that exposed Leftwich because he wants able to create much offense without that talent.

I think the one thing that many here seem to discount though is that "Both Bowles and Brady wanted the Bucs to run the ball more and be more"

as I mentioned above, its not likely we saw Brady protesting or even changing things up EVEN THOUGH HE HAS A WELL-DPCOMENTED HISTORY OF DOING SO, even within this season.  I think they were all trying to work with what they had and it just was not effective because if you canto run you cant pull defenses out of the two deep shell AN D if you do its by running things like the two verticals that was the Jones TD. BUT, that two verticals was before maybe Brown and Gronk. Last night it was Brate (almost no threat) and Jones  . . who actually slowed down like it wasn't coming to him

Against the Panthers, Brady at goal t go actually called "alert" the change the play to a pass to the TE.  Otton didn't get separation. Incomplete. That was BRADY's call, but his teammate was not up to the task.

its a generalization, I will give you that, but its is generally true  the way to stop a defense from sitting back is to punish them for it, run and beat then with what they give you.  This is Kyle Shanahan talking about keeping defenses off balance and his first sentence is about the linebackers

""If he's not stopping the run because he's so worried about the receiver and quarterback, now you're getting four yards before that guy shows up," Shanahan said. "

NOT THE BUCS

If you watch the tv coverage from last night you will actually hear Aikman making the same general comments

I don't expect Bowles to be fired. I'm waiting for the official announcement of Leftwich's firing. I had read that Bowles was having a press conference at 3:30, but no live feed on buccaneers.com and so far no official news has gone out.

Or, you hit them with play action, which has been proven time and time again to be effective against 2 High looks. Mesh concepts, high/lo iso, etc.

We’ve seen Brady audible into them (with the right formation and personnel…which was rare to begin with).

We’ve seen Byron occasionally dial them up, with success, only to completely abandon it.

We’ve seen the effectiveness of sprinkling in no-huddle, only to go away from it…or simply never use it all.

Does having a strong running game help? Of course. Nobody is arguing that. It’s simply not the only way.

Problem is, we have an OC who doesn’t have a creative bone in his body. One who can’t grasp analytics (or even worse, ignores them).

He was outlandishly predictable in every facet. The same 3-4 route combos all year. The same plays out of the same formations. The sequencing of plays and the lack of rhyme or reason. The personnel that made no sense and didn’t play to the team’s strengths. Etc.

Decent OC’s could’ve gotten more out of this offense than Byron did this year.

Or, you hit them with play action,

The interception in the end zone was PA, I think lol

If my post suggested running was the only way that is a mistake and what I meant to account for by saying a generalization

the POINT is that IF a team is the WORST running team in the league and they have very few underneath weapons but good deep weapons like Evans then you do EXACTLY what the Cowboys did to the Bucs, rush four and sit back in a shell. If your team gets ahead like the Cowboys did (the Cowboys scored on 4 long drives right?) then the Bucs will basically abandon the run, which the Bucs do and DID last night.  Thats why Brady had so many attempts.

And this last part from you is why Bowles likely stays (even though the Bucs maybe should move on):

Last night the Cowboys drives include many things the Bucs do wrong like 1st down runs and penalties.  They overcame them because they are much better than the BUCS, including are supposedly strong defense. In fact, the STORY of last night was NOT our offensive play calling, it was our terrible defense.  Prescott has something like a 140 rating?
