http://www.thesidelineview.com/columns/draft/complete-scouting-guide-jameis-winstons-rose-bowl-performance It is hard to imagine any player as polarizing as former Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, but after spending the day watching the Rose Bowl and firmly planted to Twitter throughout the game, it’s safe to say FSU QB Jameis Winston is that and then some. Some were adamant Winston was the next coming of Dan Marino or Brett Favre. There were those convinced he’s a lock to be the next Ryan Leaf. But as the game wore on and the score got out of hand, Winston showed some emotional immaturity on the sideline, only adding more fuel to the maturity issue fire, NFL teams' main concern heading into the Draft. I’m assuming Winston will declare for the 2015 NFL Draft, but regardless of when he comes out, his off the field issues will magnify the dilemma an NFL team faces making JW5 the face of the franchise. That said, many degraded him during the game on New Year’s Day, but after looking at the film and charting every dropback, this loss was FAR from his fault. I stopped charting after the Ghost fumble as it was out of hand at that point. But, analyzing every dropback he made prior to that moment, I came out of this analysis highly impressed with a number of things. And, note how few times I wrote “bad” or some variation of it. Not many at all.I’ve lived my life by the mantra of “Put the flm on, bro” but why? Why? Well, film never lies and that was certainly the case for Winston. Here’s every dropback charted for your pleasure.First QuarterFirst DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: -41Pass: 3 step - took checkdownResult: COMP +2Notes: Smart, patient, correct throwDown and Distance: 2nd and 11Hash: MYardline: +30Pass: Zone Boot to right - scrambledResult: RUN +3Notes: Again, nothing there, right decision, tucked in and got a few yardsDown and Distance: 3rd and 7Hash: RYardline: +26Pass: 5 step - flushed after inside pressureResult: INC - Thrown away.Notes: Right decision, nothing there.Down and Distance: 2nd and 9Hash: MYardline: +12Pass: 5 stepResult: SACKEDNotes: Double hitched, not sure if he saw anythingDown and Distance: 3rd and 17Hash: MYardline: +19Pass: ScreenResult: COMP +8Notes: Executed well.Second DriveDown and Distance: 2nd and 9Hash: RYardline: -16Pass: Roll left, tunnel screen throwbackResult: COMP -3Notes: Tough play call - read perfectly by DucksDown and Distance: 3rd and 12Hash: RYardline: -13Pass: 5 step - dig route at the sticksResult: INC.Notes: Threw this one into a lot of green but it was the open throw, anticipated well and could’ve been caught. NFL receivers make that catch. THIS is a throw that I’ve seen most NFL rookie quarterbacks avoid even making this year.Third DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: -23Pass: 5 stepResult: INCNotes: Airmailed a dig route. First truly bad throw - had Greene open at 15 yards across the middle, made the right read - didn’t execute the throw. Had a linebacker at about eight yards that he tried to throw over to get it to Greene. But, the linebacker forced a high throw.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: MYardline: 50Pass: 5 step (layered route to left sideline)Result: COMP +20Notes: Most of his throws to this point were a little high. WR Travis Rudolph had to sky to make this catch for a first down. Great read of cover two trap - swing route consumed flat defender, while Rudolph ran corner route into the hole. Solid all the way around on this throw.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: +30Pass: Smoke screenResult: COMP +13Notes: Quick release, throw in perfect spot for WR to catch and run upfield.Second QuarterFourth DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: MYardline: -27Pass: Play actionResult: INCNotes: Made right decision and effective throw to TE, should’ve been PI on Oregon DB. Good decision, good throw, bad call or lack threre of.Down and Distance: 3rd and 4Hash: MYardline: -33Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +4Notes: Stick route to TE. Solid.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: -38Pass: Play actionResult: COMP +17Notes: Deep crosser on the money - strong throw.Down and Distance: 2nd and 9Hash: LYardline: +24Pass: Slip screenResult: INC.Notes: Sniffed out by DE No. 9, threw it away.Down and Distance: 3rd and 9Hash: LYardline: +24Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +16Notes: Seam route behind linebacker, in front of the safety. GREAT throw.Down and Distance: 1st and GoalHash: MYardline: +13Pass: Play action (scrambled to his right)Result: INCNotes: Threw into a gaggle of Ducks. Bad throw, bad decision, seemingly panicked leaving the pocket. Got a little heat but could’ve reset without having to sprint to his right. My inclination is that he wanted to run, got chased down and then decided to throw. After a handoff for a ten yard gain to the three yard line, he got a delay of game penalty. Not always on the quarterback, but at that spot on the field and on that down, he MUST be more aware.Down and Distance: 3rd and GoalHash: MYardline: +8Pass: 5 stepResult: INCNotes: Had TE on deep in route, should’ve been PI - TE No. 35 got yanked down by Oregon DB.Fifth DriveTwo Minute DrillDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: -29Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +5Notes: Angle/circle checkdown route to the RB, enough time to take five yards. Good decision.Down and Distance: 2nd and 5Hash: MYardline: -34Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +24Notes: Slid to his right, found RB up the sideline, hit him in stride for a big gain. Not the original route (RB on the swing route, ran up sideline when Jameis scrambled)Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: +42Pass: 3 stepResult: COMP +17Notes: Slant route on the money, on time.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: MYardline: +15Pass: 5 StepResult: SCRAMBLE, RUN +5Notes: Nothing there, took off.Sixth DriveSixteen seconds remainingDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: -49Pass: 3 stepResult: COMP +7Notes: 3 step “speed out” on the money.Down and Distance: 2nd and 3Hash: RYardline: +44Pass: 3 stepResult: COMP +6Notes: In gun, catch and throw for first down. Well done again.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: +37Pass: 3 stepResult: INCNotes: Smash seven concept (hitch/corner) v. cover two - should’ve been caught. Ball a tad high but highly catchable ball. Cost the Seminoles points before half as Rashad Greene should’ve latched on to set up closer field goal. Third QuarterFirst DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: -20Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +20Notes: Good read, good throw, well executed on the crosser to Rudolph. Beat cover two in the middle of the field.Down and Distance: 2nd and 9Hash: RYardline: -41Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +17Notes: Great pocket, plenty of time, excellent throw on deep in route to Greene. Again, he beat halves or quarters coverage.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: -42Pass: 5 stepResult: INCNotes: Looked weird. Seemed like he sort of slung the football - threw it with sidearm action. Almost like he dropped his arm slot for some reason. Bad throw into the dig route to Rudolph.Second DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: -35Pass: Zone Boot to leftResult: COMP +12Notes: Got heat and stuck a great throw to FB crossing the formation.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: -47Pass: Play actionResult: SACKEDNotes: OL blew the pass protection and let free rusher off the left side. Had RB to the left for a split second but ultra-difficult to get the ball out to him. If protection calls are on Jameis, this one’s on him, but I’d assume it’s on the OL.Down and Distance: 2nd and 21Hash: LYardline: -36Pass: 5 stepResult: INCNotes: Layered/flood concept again to the wide side of the field. Much longer throw on the corner route across the field. Couldn’t make the connection.Down and Distance: 3rd and 21Hash: LYardline: -36Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +24Notes: GREAT throw on third down. Hit Bobo Wilson up the sideline on switch route. Tremendous accuracy. Had to throw it away from the safety which forced Wilson into the sideline.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: +41Pass: Bubble ScreenResult: COMP +6Notes: He’s thrown a couple of screens and each time he’s essentially placed the ball into the arms of a receiver where each guy can catch and sprint up the field. Did it here on screen to Greene.Down and Distance: 3rd and 3Hash: MYardline: +33Pass: 3 stepResult: COMP +14Notes: Stick/flat combination - Greene wide open and Winston puts it on him for another first down. (Good read by Greene to settle up before S/LB can get to coverage)Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: LYardline: +19Pass: Zone boot leftResult: COMP, +19 TDNotes: Moving to his left, he throws a dart on the crossing route to Rudolph for a TD. Big time play.Third DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: -17Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +7Notes: Circle/angle route checkdown for seven yards. Solid start to the drive.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: RYardline: -30Pass: Play actionResult: COMP +5Notes: Checked down to the hitch out of trips. Taking what the defense gives him.Down and Distance: 2nd and 5Hash: LYardline: -35Pass: Zone read smoke screenResult: INCNotes: Led the WR just a bit too far upfield. Bad throw. Big play if they connect.Down and Distance: 3rd and 5Hash: LYardline: -35Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +12Notes: Circle/angle route checkdown again. Hits Dalvin Cook for the first down. Fumble by Cook.Fourth DriveDown and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: MYardline: -23Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +5Notes: Checkdown to RB.Down and Distance: 3rd and 4Hash: LYardline: -30Pass: 5 stepResult: COMP +17Notes: Circle/angle route checkdown to RB again. Another big gain.Down and Distance: 1st and 10Hash: MYardline: +35Pass: Play actionResult: INCNotes: Low and outside to WR on out route. Not a horrible throw, either his WR was going to catch it or no one would. No harm, no foul.Down and Distance: 2nd and 10Hash: MYardline: +35Pass: Zone read bubble screenResult: COMP +5Notes: Screen for five yard gain.Down and Distance: 3rd and 5Hash: RYardline: +30Pass: 5 stepResult: INCNotes: Shallow crosser, threw it away from rolled up corner and should’ve been caught. Ball placement was perfect. Got interior pressure, slid away from it, then got pressure from the edge. Pulled up and threw to an open space. This was actually really impressive to get it off and give his receiver a chance....and then we know how the next play went.Their Own Worst EnemyWhen I read a tweet that said NFL scouts were somewhat impressed with Winston after the game, I had to do this exercise. I thought he was better than most thought, but after examining each dropback, I more than agreed with the NFL personnel people. He made some impressive decisions and throws; some that were incomplete were even better than the ones that were caught. The Ducks didn’t heat him up much at all and forced him to throw into seven and eight man coverage the majority of the time. I’ve always said that I don’t think he handles pressure all that well and I’d have liked to see Oregon vary it up a bit more with five/six/seven man pressures. But, what they did worked, I suppose, and FSU was its own worst enemy, including Jameis’ Ghost fumble. We’ll have plenty of time to pick apart the young man as the draft approaches, but if you’d like to pick him apart for this performance, that’s not real smart.
