If Lovie wants Ballard they could easily rework the contracts to make Lovie happy and make so the Chiefs couldnt use that excuse

Not going to happen.

but he needs a GM to "force" offensive players on him . .  . damn Lovie only wants to play with an 11 man roster!

@JasonPhilCole:#Bucs officially asked for permission to talk to #Chiefs personnel exec Chris Ballard. I'm led to believe it will be turned down. We'll see

I think it is stupid to give any NFL coach "final say" on management decisions.  Unless you think that the general manager position is essentially meaningless.  It's barely humanly possible to be an NFL head coach as far as time demands.  They all don't see their family's and **CENSORED** the way it is.  How the **CENSORED** is Lovie Smith supposed to stay up on all the rosters and practice squads of all the other NFL franchises to have "final say" on who we grab to replace our running back when he get's injured half way through the season?  Or watch every snap of hundreds of prospect's college career to have "final say" on who we take in the 6th round?  Anyone who entertains the notion that you get the best candidate for your general manager position when your head coach has "final say" is kidding themselves (or just really stupid I guess).  The guys that do well at general manager in the NFL put in the same crazy hours the coaches do because they do all that **CENSORED**.  Generally speaking they are people who want final say because they do all that **CENSORED**. Not to mention they are the best people to have the final say to begin with.  I think the boys found a way to take a perfectly good hire and fuck it all up.

I think what FRG and the original tweet are saying is the issue isn't whether Ballard wants the job w/o getting final say in Buc personnel matters; it's the KC organization's view that Ballard going to the Bucs would NOT be a promotion, therefore the KC owners/management may NOT want to let Ballard out of his existing KC contract. True?

Yeah I guess it could be a little problem because teams generally don't let executives out of their existing contracts unless another team gives them a promotion entailing final say.

I would rather we go after a guy who will be fine with the terms that come with the job. If final say is a big issue I dont want the guy.

Yes, of course, but that isn't the issue. The issue is that we might miss out on the best candidates out there because of Lovies "final say."If it is an issue like it's looking like it might, then we may have to settle on a guy.  Not what I really want happening when it comes to our new GM.

Exactly. The norm around the league is you only let a personnel guy out of his contract with you is if another team is going to give him final say. If you don't have final say, all other front office jobs are seen as fairly equal, so you'd just be letting go of someone you like and who does a good job for you just to be nice and help another team out without really letting your guy advance his career.

You keep using this "final say" phrase as if it's an established criteria for letting people take a promotion.  I'm curous where you are getting this because it sounds suspiciously like you are pulling it out of your ass.

Damn you guys are worried about EVERYTHING. calm down

We were worried about Raheem being inexperienced, and that came back to haunt us. We were worried about the players not buying into Schiano's methods, and not good at making adjustments in games, and that happened. Lovie was an awful evaluator of talent his 9 years in Chicago. What makes us think that anything has changed? This roster looks good now, and he will be able to have us winning games, but in 5 years this roster will just implode and look like crap. We won't have a #1 receiver because VJax would have declined/retired, and Lovie would have spent most of our picks on scrub offensive linemen that we end up cutting/trading. The one top pick at WR is going to be a mediocre at best player. Revis will be old too, and I doubt that we draft any All Pro defensive players like David or McCoy anytime soon.

also, awful evaluator of talent? Let's just go through some of his draft picks that panned out. Also I should mention that they spent ONE pick on OL in the top 4 rounds in NINE drafts, Mr. Gabe Carimi in the 1st round. He hardly drafted OL, so don't just lie about him spending a bunch of picks on OL that didn't pan out. They had C Olin Kreutz, one of the best centers to play the game his ENTIRE tenure in Chicago. Jamarcus Webb was easily the worst LT I've seen since Kenyatta Walker but Webb was a 5th rounder.2004 - DT Tommie Harris, DT Tank Johnson, DB Nathan Vasher2005 - RB Cedric Benson, DB Chris Harris2006 - DB Daniel Manning, WR Devin Hester2007 - TE Greg Olson2008 - RB Matt Forte, WR Earl Bennett, TE Kellen Davis2009 - DT Henry Melton, WR Johnny Knox2010 - DB Major Wright, DE Corey Wootton2011 - T Gabe Carimi, DB Chris Conte2012 - DE Shea McClellin, WR Alshon JefferyThat's an average of two starters per draft. I'd say that's pretty darn good.

That's not a very good draft record at all imo.  Bottom half over that span I would wager.  I looked over that span of drafts for them.  Whole lot of ugly.  But they had several of those seasons w/out a 1st and a couple w/out 1 and 2.  Hopefully we don't do too much of that shit.

There's a lot of awful players in that list that should not be  there if you're trying to make an argument in favour of his drafting record. Carimi got traded very early, and Conte is one of the worst safeties in the league. Benson was pretty much a bust for the Bears.

@caplannfl:#Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard will not be taking the #Buccaneers general manager job, per source.@caplannfl:Source said the Chiefs actually blocked him from taking the job, which does not include final say on personnel. So he remains with KC.

That sucks for Lovie to not get the guy he wanted.  Only 32 GM jobs out there I wonder how Chris Ballard feels about being told he can't have one.
