Pewter Report recently caught up with NFL Network and FOX Sports analyst Charles Davis who is covering the East-West Shrine Game this week in St. Petersburg, and asked him about Lovie Smith and Jeff Tedford. Davis said he is a big fan of both, but especially Tedford, who will coach the Bucs offense for Smith. https://www.pewterreport.com/index.php?option=com_k2&Itemid=20&view=item&layout=item&id=9578
Good read. I like what he said about Tedford's QBs and I agree. So many people that I have talked to keep pointing out how all (except Rogers) of Tedford's QBs were busts in the NFL. Well maybe they all sucked to begin with and Tedford just made them good enough to be 1st round picks. Once they got to the next level, they fell back to earth. When players get money and new coaches...there are so many factors. Did the players get lazy? How good were their coaches? Did the players struggle picking up their system? I definitely am willing to give Tedford a chance. Here's a look at Tedford's QBs that were high round picks and their offensive coaches:Joey Harrington had Steve Mariucci as his head coach who was an offensive guy but never made it back into the leauge and his OC in 2004-05 was Sherm Lewis. He then dealt with Ted Tolner, and Greg Olson. I'd argue none of these guys were ever offensive geniuses. Akili Smith had Bruce Coslet (1999-2002) and Dick LeBeau as HC. His OC was Ken Anderson in 1999 and 2000. He then got demoted to QBs coach through 2002. The new OC in 2001-2002 was Bob Bratkowski.Trent Dilfer had Sam Wyche with Turk Schonert as QB coach in 1994-1995. Mike Shula as OC in 1996-1999. He then went to Ravens with Matt Cavanaugh as OC in 2000 and had his best season and won a SB. He then went to Seattle with Mike Holmgren and was never a full time starter again.David Carr had Chris Palmer as his OC in Houston from 2002-2006. Chris Palmer has never found much success as an OC. Kyle Boeller had Matt Cavanaugh in 2003 and 2004 and then Jim Fassel through 2007.
