We can only tag one guy, at this point it may make more sense to tag Shaq Barrett than to tag Winston. Tagging Winston raises the salary expectation to a level I don't think he's worth. Shaq is likely to get 'franchise tender' money on the open market and I don't think Winston would. So I think you tag Shaq and try to sign Winston straight up (assuming you want to extend him). Tagging Shaq would also give us a chance to try to get some trade compensation for him if he's seen to be super valuable and we don't want to commit that money to him we can tag him and trade him rather than wait for a future 3rd round comp (assuming Licht doesn't screw it up). Franchise tendered players can be traded for less than the 2 1st compensation that goes along with the tag.

This brings up a strange scenario for Winston where he will get a shot at the open market and may not even want to come back. If we haven't extended him yet, then there is no reason for him to sign before the tampering period when he can see what other teams thinks he's worth. He may see bigger $$ elsewhere or just the hope to get to a better team/organization.

I just see more value to the organization to use the tag on Shaq, either to keep as a long term solution at Edge or to trade for picks. Tagging Winston only raises his salary floor and if he's not extended long term, kicks the can down the road a year and the organization lives in limbo a little longer.
