Kind of my thinking too, but the o-line is key to allowing Grizz to “get in his bag) over the bye. I think getting Goedeke back at close to 100%, and finding a legit RG (Barton?) are keys to any tweaks Grizz comes up with.Grizz has the advantage of continuity that Coen had to CREATE.
This is the only part that puzzled me a bit. I get same system continuity but that has to be balanced against film. Coen surprised many defenses. Credit to him but I anticipated Grizz would have tougher sledding because of no surprise but then the BENEFIT of "continuity" also vanished right? Because of injury? No irving and shuffled line over and over.
the line was largely intact mar year look at the snaps
great post though
What puzzles you? Coen came in after Canales and created a new system.
The whole point in keeping Grizz was keeping the same system that he was a part of in tact.
I'm not talking about injury continuity BUT the personnel is almost exactly the same and he added Egbuka. There's very few players learning a new system (again I'm ignoring the very obvious injuries he's dealt with).
It seems to me that Grizz abandoned the unique run game Coen created and went hyper vanilla. Could that be due to injuries? Sure... But again I'll beat this drum:
The job of an ELITE play caller is making the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
Grizz imo has benefit from improv Baker and all that improv likely led to his injuries... Double edge sword.
I expect Grizz to have an excellent second half and I will sing his praise when that happens.
well what I meant shows up in the stats, I think. My point was that part of last years amazing success was Coen surprising defenses. No film.
if you compare the increase in scoring and yards that Coen created when he took over from Canales, it's install more than the increase and the production with Jax. Because it's lower increase (new system for existing talent) over year prior and overall performance (scoring and yards) against the league I would say some of that Coen not surprising defenses as much.
I recognize talent plays a part but that's why I looked at both stats. Could definitely be wrong but if correct it would suggest Grizz shouldn't have the same kind of success without changing it up some (sequence, little twists etc)
I think learning to play-call through early, significant, injuries to the o-line and the same kind of implosion at WR & the starting RB - is like having one half of his brain tied behind his back - while achieving a 6-2 start - sounds pretty good. Some of that is due to Baker’s 1 & 2 minute scramble-drills saving our bacon, still it is impressive.
Once the parts are there, can he assemble them? Are we getting our horses back? If we do, who do we get back, and when? Roster is fairly deep, but how much will be available?
Do we keep all our horses when they get back?
Sure looks like this stew could come together, just not sure how long it will take? We have built some cushion with our wins, think we could lose the 3 big games remaining, but there’s always a surprise in there somewhere.
Lots of question marks. Can’t wait to see the answers.
I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't get Godwin, Bucky, or Goedeke back after the bye.
Tempering my expectations.

Im starting to think Luke isn’t coming back.
And, unfortunately, Godwin will most likely be a shell of his former self.
Need JMac, but doubt he’s ready until Dec.
If we don get Luke back, then Baker’s going to get pummeled, he won’t hold up. I can’t see Licht allowing that eventuality. If that’s the case (Luke not returning), a trade for a RT may be all we do. We only have a week to wait on that question.I wouldn't be shocked if we didn't get Godwin, Bucky, or Goedeke back after the bye.

Yes, Mek, JMAc, and Tez can get it done, with Godwin splitting underneath/cross/screens routes with Shep, and Otton & Culp could help as well. But with JMac likely not returning until December - Mek, Tez & Shep won’t scare the next 3 teams
And getting Bucky back would just level the entire offense up.

The fact they are so quiet scares me about them all

I don't see any team trading a good Tackle. OL depth isn't bad for everybody. They are very hard to find. Replacing Skule with Heck was a mistake.
I agree, the best we could hope for is a short term rental for a guy that may be past his prime, but still better than the options we have there until Luke can get back to the active roster. If we don get Luke back, then Baker’s going to get pummeled, he won’t hold up. Low trade impact but still has some insurance for Baker.
Heck v Skule is a classic dilemma
Replacing Skule with Heck was a mistake
Thought Skule wanted to leave because he wanted to compete for a starting job.
And getting Bucky back would just level the entire offense up.
Getting him back would obviously help.
But, let’s not pretend he was “lighting it up”.
He has the team’s worst EPA/Rush and total EPA for our RB’s. He faced a lower percentage of loaded boxes vs. White and has only had half the success rate/%, and a lower YPC.
Fire and I discussed it in the preseason, but it’s clear Grizz is/was useless regarding his usage.
Pacing to do over a 100+ more carries and nearly double the target vs. last year.
He’s not a bell cow back, but they’re treating him like one.
The difference Bucky will make IF he comes back is those 5-7 yard gains could become 15-25 yards games with his short yardage burst and shiftiness.
Ultimately we are seeing how impactful Coen was in the run game because Grizz has resorted back to Canales run style... And we don't have a dominant interior line like in years past.
It speaks to two things:
Always draft o-line depth
RBs need a play caller to match their skillset
Replacing Skule with Heck was a mistake
Thought Skule wanted to leave because he wanted to compete for a starting job.
That's correct. I understand not getting to resign Skule because of that, but replacing him with Heck was a mistake. He's 72nd out of 77 OT's overall.
Grizz's offense ...
with the 72nd of 77th OT ...
(and the revolving G next to him)
(And the RB2)
(And no Evans, CG, JMac)
most resembles the offense we put on the field against the 49ers in 2024?
I think that offense put up 20 points
And it had IRVING RUNNING FOR 5.6ypc

We can make all sorts of excuses for Grizz but he's not really capturing our strengths and masking those weaknesses well enough to call him anything more than a middle of the pack play caller.
That's just the reality.
For example what do you do when the line struggles and a team is aggressively blitzing?
We all know the answer... But are we doing it?
Now, likely no JMac. Waiting for CG and M1k3 to return in whatever capacity they’re able.
Good thing we drafted Mek & Tez - hate that we’re relying on rookies - hopefully their relatively light workload so far will extend the confines of the rookie wall.
Goedeke is now the biggest hope for stabilizing o-line. By the way, has anyone heard anything about Haggard?
