Great to see

"Glazer called Rice “the missing piece to make our defense one of the greatest of all time” and said that the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s selectors have committed an oversight by not putting Rice in Canton.

“From 1996 to 2005, he totaled a league-best 101.5 sacks over those eight years, more than Hall of Famers Michael Strahan and Jason Taylor,” Glazer said. “During that same stretch, his mark of eight seasons with double-digit sack totals is the seventh most in NFL history, and all six men ahead of him on that list are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Simeon’s credentials for induction into our Ring of Honor are unquestioned, but he’s equally qualified and deserving of an overdue call from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Notably, he’s the only retired player with 100 sacks over eight consecutive seasons who doesn’t own a Gold Jacket. It’s time to rectify that oversight.”

From the podium during the Ring of Honor announcement Rice mentioned something that is the perfect symbol of him as a player

"With a smirk, Rice remembered how the Bucs back then used the Florida heat to make opposing offenses wilt.

Rice recalled once an offensive line of an opponent was looking to find any crack in the Bucs, anything to offer a glimmer of hope. Hoping someone on the Bucs’ defense was getting run down, too. Instead, they saw Rice playing air guitar from across the line waiting for the snap — while those big uglies were sucking air"

I think he should be.

Think about JJ Watt...whether warranted or not, he is a first ballet hall of famer

JJ Watt - 151 Games, 114.5 sacks, 449 tackles, 27 forced fumbles

Simeon Rice - 174 Games, 122 sacks, 403 tackles, 28 forced fumbles

so Simeon had more games but no body talks about Simeon like they do JJ Watt

Rice has a SB ring and he was elite on two different teams.  Rice is overdue to go into the HoF.

i agree

just saying...Watt will be first ballot while Rice is waiting decades and their numbers aren't too far off

just seems some players are media darlings while others are not

A closer look at the two:

JJ Watt: 114.5 Sacks, 586 Tackles (449 solo/137 asst), 195 TFL, 27 FF, 17 FR, 2 Int, & 70 PD in 151 games. 5x Pro Bowl, 5x All-Pro, 3x AP Defensive Player of the Year

Simeon Rice: 122 Sacks, 483 Tackles (403 solo/80 asst), 93 TFL, 28 FF, 8 FR, 5 Int, & 43 PD in 174 games. 3x Pro Bowl, 1x All-Pro, AP Defensive Rookie of the Year

There is a pretty big difference in some of those numbers, especially when you consider Watt mostly played and moved around as an interior player (34 DE) and over a season's worth less of games. Watt was a much better overall player than Rice. On a per game basis, I think interceptions is the only place Rice is better - oddly enough.

I don't have any problem with Rice being elected to the HOF.  He was one helluva pass rusher. But he lacked in other areas of the game, which is why he hasn't been put in as of yet.

This is the thing, right? If you try to reconcile those two players by their stats, Rice is a HOFer. The problem . . and to be clear i think its an UNFORTUNATE problem . .  is that getting into the HOF is about so much more than stats.

During his career JJ Watt was a central character in the NFL storytelling. Deserved or not, his IMAGE was central to the NFL during his playing time. He was huge with sponsors. Dick's sporting goods. Wisconsin, white middle America hero. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR with multiple outlets etc etc.  Take nothing away from his on the field performance BUT he was also one hell of a performer OFF the field. The first choice often for post-game interviews etc etc

By comparison, Rice was a great player who was an odd bird. South-side Chicago kid with a quirky way about him, especially in front of a microphone. Not sure if he had any meaningful endorsement deals. And at least when was with the Bucs he was one of many and almost never the key postgame interview because there was Sapp and brooks and Lynch and . .

That should mean NOTHING, but it does

Think of that when you think of perpetually UNDER covered LVD . .
