How did Sully's offense break all time Buccaneer franchise records last year, but now it's all Sully and his offense sucks? I mean, we were the #1 offense in the league last year for 5 or 6 weeks straight and finished 9th overall. How does that happen with garbage can Freeman at the helm, and now we can't get a 1st down in the 2nd half of most games? I won't pretend to know the answer, but I doubt it is as simple as Sully sucks.

Why do people keep talking about those records as if they were some amazing feat?  You weren't even a Freepologist. Those records are unimpressive.

I agree, but it was enough to be the #1 offense in the NFL for awhile and end the season as the #9 offense. So it was good.....and now we are dead last a year later. Historically bad in the 2nd half. So that seems pretty crazy to me.

Every team has major injuries. The Vikings just lost Adrian Peterson for the year and have to choose between Cassel, Ponder, or Freeman as their quarterback...and they just went into Philly and beat the Eagles. Before that they took the Ravens down to the end and lost by a FG. Before that they beat the Bears. Before that they tied the Packers. Don't use injury as an excuse. We still have our #1 WR, James and Rainey have been more productive than Martin was, and Wright's arrival has made up for losing Mike Will.

Very true JD, but the problem is that although we still have good pieces on O they are being horribly misused. Case in point was last Sunday, absolute garbage by most of the O until they went no huddle and then all of a sudden everything clicked. Then they went away from it and got zippo then came back to it and got another TD. The problem is that our opponents know exactly what our game plan is and smother the long developing plays, all of a sudden we go for quick strikes and our team moves the ball. If the brain trust coaching our team could recognise that their scheme sucks and change accordingly we'd have a better O, as it is until this bunch of chimps are fired we won't know what to really expect from the O as it's designed to frustrate everyone.

It's not an excuse , it's a fact .  When you lose your best players you aren't as good. You can find a few examples of teams having good games with injuries , we've had some also , but over the long haul you are going to struggle more and have a more difficult time of it. Unless your coaches do a really great job getting creative to compensate....oh wait .... I think we just figured it out....( sorry , buddy , I know you desperately want to find a way to pin this all on Glennon )

Every team in the NFL has a better offense. So either the Bucs have the worst injuries in the NFL, the players all suck, or the coaches suck.

Uh no. I said I don't think it's all Sully. I think it's probably mostly Schiano, never mentioned Glennon or blamed him.....but you just did. Like I said.....I don't really know. I just don't think it is as simple as "Sully Sucks"

FRG,The point is it's clearly both. If your coaches are sub par they aren't going to be smart enough to find ways of overcoming losing two of their biggest playmakers on offense. Our only gameplanning answer has been to run up the middle every 1st and 2nd down and set up lots of 3rd and unmanageables.

So, we're allowed to count "almost wins" as a good stat now?  Then I think we are 7 and 7, not 4 and 10.And Wright's arrival has "made up for" MWill?I get it, you're not even trying to pretend you're being serious about this any longer, right?

It wasn't as good as the "#9" total yards offense last year, nor is it as bad as the #32 total yards offense this year. Football Outsiders had it ranked 14th last year, and it's 24th this year. The passing game was ranked 18th, and the run game was 10th. Now it's 22nd in passing, but dropped all the way to 23rd in the run game. Some of that is injuries to players like Martin and Nicks, some of it is the collapse of the OL's play. But the passing game was streaky last year because it relies on getting big chunks of yards, not on methodically moving down the field. It worked at times to great effect because Martin was someone teams worried about and because Freeman wasn't afraid to throw the deep 50-50s to Williams and V-Jax. And it's still streaky this year, though in some ways worse, because a) Glennon is a rookie, often making rookie mistakes; b) we haven't consistently been able to scare teams with our running game, and as a result end up with lots of 3rd and horrific; c) we haven't done enough to change the offense to truly suit Glennon's skillset (early on it seemed like we did, but I don't feel like it's been the same in recent weeks). I'm not a Sullivan fan. While I think Schiano's philosophy is at work here,  I also think the play-calling has simply stunk at times. And that's mostly him.

Interesting post. Stats and context . . . . although the "Martin was someone teams worried about" comment is sure to get you in Dutch with the "running has nothing to do with passing game" crowd  .. . ;)

I'm sympathetic toward that group, Vin (I think they are more right than wrong) - but I also don't think there's much doubt that Martin was a worry for opposing Coordinators.

I think the biggest difference in the offense between this year and last year is that Glennon doesn't take as many chances on the 50-50 jump balls as Freeman did.  VJ is not a separation guy; he creates his own separation by having a big body and ridiculous catch radius.  Glennon, IMO, is too hesitant to throw it up and let him make a play when he's covered one-on-one.
