Signing Baker to a 3 or 4 year deal and using a draft pick on a QB within the first four rounds this year makes no sense
we have some more pressing holes to fill
you give 2024 to Baker. If he regresses, then yeah let’s consider 2025 draft pick
QB is the most important position on the field. If the value is there, I'd have no problem with the franchise taking a QB. I know there are those amongst us that have all the confidence in the world that Baker Mayfield is a QB to move forward with long-term, but that may not be the case. Having a Plan B isn't the worst thing in the world.

The other thing to consider is the 2025 QB class looks EXTREMELY weak.

Agree 1,000%. Get Baker signed and draft/FA the missing pieces around him. And resign the other vets we must sign.

so likely that means a first round pick?
in that case, it makes no sense to sign Baker to a 3-4 year deal. Might as well go with the first round rookie and it doesnt appear the Bucs are confident they will get a viable solution at pick 26 as youd be risking alot that late in the offseason.
we could always use a 2nd or 3rd on a QB but what has that got us in the past - Trask, Glennon, and Simms; with 2 of the 3 getting playing time and not the answer. Only a few still holding out hope for Trask.
in 2024, assuming Bucs re-sign their top guys, the first 4 rounds should be allocated in no particular order -edge, secondary, interior offensive line, line backer.
The SR article I referenced is actually the same debate playing out here. SR argues that drafting Trask was the right strategy just maybe wrong player.

the problem is that there was no qualified players in that range. Davis Mills was likely the best option. He got playing time with Texans and wasn’t bad. But he wasn’t great and they drafted stroud shortly there after. But yeah Mills was likely the right pick there but still we wouldn’t have seen what we had in him until this year anyway and if they were going to bring in Baker, he’d lose out to him as well.
Kellen mond didn’t impress with Vikings and he is on his second team as well
Trask has proven to be a great team player but not being able to beat out Gabbert was eye opening. It really wasn’t fair to him that the thought process was he’d replace the GOAT. That’s lofty goals for him and he was doomed to fail. The guy was the 64th overall pick.
the draft pick should have been used to support the rest of the team particularly that the Bucs have been slobbering about Baker mayfield since 2019 with Arians and Bowles; almost like they were itching to replace Brady with a veteran anyway
so likely that means a first round pick?
Possibly, yes.
in that case, it makes no sense to sign Baker to a 3-4 year deal.
When you consider the guaranteed money, it will likely be a 2-year deal in reality. It's not the worst thing in the world for a QB to sit and learn. Honestly, this is something Mayfield probably would have benefited from.
Pigeonholing yourself to either drafting a certain position or not drafting a certain position tends to lead to bad picks. Take the BPA and move on.

If Trask plays to expectations we never get Mayfield because according to Licht the plan was for Trask to basically lead us through 1-2 cap problem years

Not that it would happen, but let's say Daniels fell all the way to #26.
What would you do?
This assumes we've re-upped Mahomes...err...Mayfield to a 3-4 year deal.

If he was the highest graded player on my board at the time, I would take him.

oh yes if that would make it interesting if Daniels dropped.
completely agree not to pigeon hole ourselves but if it’s Bo nix or penix there I’m passing
As a practical matter, NFL team rarely have the luxury of just taking the BPA. They are almost always drafting with some leverage to their need.
In his article, SR gives a few examples of teams who have succeeded with the strategy. Chiefs, Packers etc.

lolz
In what universe does Daniel’s fall to #26?
Think someone takes a chance on Pennix - just less sure of him.
While I agree with the idea of drafting a QB, I don’t think we go that way at #26 (Edge/CB/JPJ), and also don’t think a decent one will fall to us in 2nd round.
It’s a deep draft at WR - which gives better value than a developmental QB in the 2nd round. Just don’t see the Bucs spending that kind of draft capital on QB till later.
