Mayfield makes some throws and this game may not have been as close as it should have been.  Hard for a play caller to stay head of the down and distances with missed completions. But yeah maybe Grizzard might tweak it more and play call more short passes on first down to get Mayfield in synch.

The difference between last years first game with Coen and this years first game with grizz, can’t be answered by total number of run or pass plays called on first down for both game. Coen got to call a lot of first down run plays in the 4th quarter last year, because we had a nice lead and had put up 30+ points. Conversely, Grizz was having to call more pass plays and play from behind later in yesterday’s game. Bottom line, Coen started off much quicker. First drives are scripted and Coen was a master. I hope to see that get better with Grizz.

amen!

Too many variables for any one thing to be declared the deciding factor (eg Mayfield was much better first half of Game 1 2024 then Game 1 2025, but it was also at home etc). And definitely agree that Coen's scripted starts were a huge part of the Bucs success. Thats one reason the Grizz comparison is so interesting

This week we saw a little more spicy play calling from Grizzard.  Partly because of the Texans elite defense, partly because of the makeshift OL but I like what I am seeing from Grizzard.  He is improving week to week and working and adjusting his scheme with the players on hand.

I don't agree. His play calling was god awful for 2.5 quarters and got bailed out by hard runs from White and Bucky.

Nothing intermediate. It was Lefty-esk. Behind the line or 25+ yards down field.

First two drives were of course good. Last drive Baker saved his ass on 4th and 10.

There's nothing that chaps my ass more than everyone streaking deep with no layers underneath.

He needs to learn and he will l.

Nothing intermediate.

Will definitely watch this again but at least live it looked a bit like we didn't have receivers capable of getting free. Evans struggled against press, relatively speaking. Egbuka got hurt and seemed slowed up for a while. Orton doesn't seem to have enough pace, generally.

But you may be right that the play calling was the issue.

yepp, there is definitely lack of intermediate throws

still, I’d wait for the OL to be complete, then our running game will open the field. of course, next injury is always around the corner but there is, at least in theory, that amazing option of godwin coming back and everyone else being healthy … and that sounds damn good!

Baker missed 2 or 3 gimme check downs too so it's not all Grizz when Baker is forcing into doubles deep.

It'll be 3+ weeks before we are full strength

Even then, Godwin will most likely be on a snap count (unless you're specifically referring to the O-Line).

Specifically the o-line but with Mauch out for season it's different now.

I'm starting to think we just wait on Godwin until week 5.

I say we wait on him, Wirfs, and Goedeke until right before the bye.
