Rough EXECUTION by the Bucs on both sides of the ball, but Grizz looked okay in live action.

In the 3rd quarter after  the Tez completion is overturned on 2nd an 8, Grizz had a 3rd and 8 and called a little interior screen to White.  Perfect timing on the call.  Unfortunately, White was tripped up from behind, but if that doesn't happen its likely a touchdown.

He also ran a quick sweep with Egbuka that was well-timed and worked out well.

I am sure there are other good ones and maybe some not so good, but seems like hes going to be okay?

Solid debut but I think he can do more once Wirfs is back in the lineup.

Should smooth out over time. Good to get a win while it gets sorted and injuries are a pain early in the season.

Hard to tell but I was not a fan of running it on 1st down over and over... Then a couple 2nd and 10 runs I couldn't stand.

We need our full line back because the run blocking was poopy

I loved the shuffling of personnel at receiver all game. Baker didn’t have as much time as he will when we get our line back to normal. Great pre snap movement and overall playcalling in my opinion. I still have bad PTSD from Byron the Buffoon Leftwhich playcalling.

One aspect that I think Coen was very responsible for was the creative run game, being his dad was from the wing T. I wanna see more development on that front. Remember Coen always made those LB's a step late with the threat of the jet sweep motion to create better spacing inside.

So yea I think we're forgetting some run game concepts and pacing of playcalling but grizz can always get better as the season goes on. Its only been one game

Btw that TD reverse with brian thomas the Jags ran today is almost unstoppable G/H counter bluff reverse where the H does a tornado motion/reverse pull. Same play with bucky irving we ran last year against the broncos got us around 15-20 yards. Love that play always an easy 10-20 yards from every team ive seen run it

(Only 1 game)

We also run a lot of deep middle y-cross with digs, thats what grizz likes but I think if we can keep and add some of those corner routes we like in 3rd down situations we ran last year, its been successful and I like Baker throwing outside moreso than inside its just an easier passing lane for a shorter qb and safer for our receivers than going across the middle.

I'll probably take a deeper look later since i was going in and out of redzone

Shaky start for Grizz. We definitely didn’t have the same flow we had most games last year. Too many runs on first down that left us in 2nd and 8, 9, or 10. It was his first real game calling plays and I’m sure it’ll get better. Coen’s Jags looked pretty good yesterday.

@mic - you’re exactly right. Coen’s running game scheme was beautiful. He kept defenses off-balance. I did like the trap to Egbuka yesterday, that came from Coen’s plays. Last year our running success came from creativity and getting the passing game going. We don’t have an offensive line that we can just pound the ball behind. We have to set it up.

It would definitely be interesting  to see if this was more play calling or just line struggling? Several people posted similar thoughts about 1st down play calling. The Coen signature move was early scoring. The Bucs led the league (I think) in 1st Qtr scoring, so at a minimum we were off that pace, but was that more run/pass mixture on 1st down or the reshuffle of the line?

Without looking, it seemed like Grizz's first down run/pass was roughly the same as Coen's on game 1.  Could be wrong. I think we only had two field goals in Coen's game 1 first quarter, so maybe not as far off as it seemed  The big thing that stood out (to me) was the late shuffle of the line, but maybe it was alsosome predictability on 1st down.

Saw it and thought the same thing. Coen was really creative in the run game. Haven't seen that from the new guy yet, but this dude has never called plays before. Ever.

Like I said in the gameday thread, I don't think Grizzard was especially great. But the QB probably has 300 passing yards if Mayfield consistently makes the throws. He make some great plays here and there, gutting out the W, but didn't have a particularly good day. Also, the OL changes would be difficult for any OC to look good in.

I'm still sitting in the cautiously optimistic boat with the new OC, but he definitely has room to improve.

Pretty interesting when you look.

First half of game 1 of 2024 Coen is 10 runs to 4 pass on 1st down.  Grizz is 7 passes to 6 runs on 1st down. BUT the Bucs went 3 and out twice under Grizz to start the game where was Coen got field goals, one on a 51 yard drive. So, I think you would say they execute better during Coen's 1st game.  (Home v away divisional opponent etc)

The other thing that stands out a bit is that Grizz's first down runs yesterday were often successful. I only looked at the beginning, but they start with pass on 1st down, 1st series and its a FAIL. Second series 1st down is a run and it is a FAIL. So the first two series are bad and a wash in terms of P v R.  So, again, maybe more execution there. Hard to say.

Third series 1st down is a pass an it is a FAIL. They have a big run on 2nd to help get a 1st down and then on that second 1st down of the 3rd series they run for 9 (Success). The next 1st down where they they run they get 7 (success). The next first down they run for 11, but its called back for holding (Fail, but on line).

So, too lazy to keep going, but i think some of their early struggles may have been on the three man shuffled line as opposed to play calling, at least as compared to Coen).

It was OK. I def thought we were getting a Leftwich type call of a game after not picking up a single first until the end of 1Q. But, he was able to right the ship and call a decent game.

Just my take but looking back at the first two drives Mayfield is playing pretty poorly.  He misses a throw for a first down on the first drive and then on the second drive he hold the ball twice when he has underneath options.

We are down 7 and on the second drive he's throwing form his EZ so maybe being very cautious.  Not sure.
