Gronk’s comments about “baker will win the starting job” says so much. The nicest thing he could say about Trask was that he got to sit behind Brady for 2 years. Everyone harping about him not getting a chance. The people that have been around Trask the last 2 years know what they have in him. He’ll get his chance this offseason, and they are hedging their bets. Trask was a bad pick in the second round.

Thought his comments were almost exclusively about Mayfield, except for the bit about sitting behind Brady? And hardly controversial, he's choosing the veteran 1st round pick etc.

we should all hope that Heisman trophy winning, first pick Mayfield can be out Trask.  otherwise, its an even longer season ahead than most anticipate

Trask will play if things are shut down.

If we are at or near 500 then Baker will continue the start.

The only way I see him benched is if he turns it over a bunch

You have a head coach on the hot seat.  If Mayfield is not performing, they'll pull the plug on him in a heartbeat.  I'd say Mayfield has until the bye week.  If he is costing the Bucs games they won't hesitate to go with Trask.  They don't have anything invested in Mayfield.

As for the OC, he has no loyalty to Mayfield either.  He's trying to establish his offense.  If Mayfield can't do it, then give Trask a chance.  But even if Bowles was getting fired midseason, Canales isn't getting fired.  He's going to go with whoever he thinks can win games.  There's no reason to wait until some point when the Bucs are out of it.  At that point, who cares?

And finally, the last two games of the schedule are against division foes the Saints and Panthers.  That makes it more likely that there will still be a chance for the Bucs to be in the hunt in this mediocre division up until the end, and not mathematically out of it.

Mayfield is a veteran.  He is what he is.  He's not on an expensive long term contract.  If he's not performing, there's no reason to wait around and keep losing games and hoping for better.  It won't get better.  He's got four games to prove himself.

@catherder - it’s not happening. Trask is not and will not be the answer. If Baker doesn’t perform, there is a good chance they still end up going back to Baker because he will give the Bucs a better chance to win. Trask ain’t it.

I only want to see Trask out there if we are free falling or eliminated.

Baker is the better qb. He's the better talent.

And that doesn't mean I think Baker will play well... I just see Trask as some that doesn't have zip in the mid range. All of his arm strength is for lobbing 50/50 balls.

I think the coaching staff sees it the same way

You might see it that way, because you are willing to see the Bucs reset and rebuild if things go south.  I don't see how Bowles could see it the same way.  His job is on the line.  He's not going to be around for a rebuild.  If Mayfield sucks, and I'm not saying he will, Bowles isn't going to sit and watch his defense play hard while Mayfield tanks the offense.  It doesn't matter who the backup is, that guy is coming in.   He will have no patience for it.  I don't know why you think he will.

From 2016:  The Jets will start Geno Smith at quarterback on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens at MetLife Stadium.

At the NFL fall meetings in Houston on Wednesday, Jets owner Woody Johnson says it was coach Todd Bowles' decision and he is "behind the coach 100 percent."

The struggling Jets (1-5) have lost four straight games and Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown an NFL-leading 11 interceptions and just five touchdown passes during a brutal start.

listen here Kyle. You were drafted by the NFL. That is quite the accomplishment. More than millions of other Americans can say.

You were quite talented to do so but other than Roberto Aguayo you will be known as one of the worst Bucs draft picks of all time. Not your fault! You were just living your life and the Bucs front office was still drunk from the parade

Fact is nobody knew how many years Brady would play for the Bucs.  Most would have predicted that he would have retired after two years, which he actually did. Licht drafted Trask knowing that Brady had played one year out of his two year deal and probably had a year left.  The fact that it didn't turn out that way is not Licht's or Trask's fault. Just the way the cookie crumbled.

Licht drafted Trask knowing Brady would play for a repeat.

It's like a lighter version of what the Packers did with Rodgers.

You've got a championship team. Draft to win NOW.

Trask isn't even ready to play 3 years later.

@catherder - it is Licht’s fault that he drafted Trask at all. Especially in the 2nd round.

Licht didn't know Brady would be back for Year 3.  Nobody knew that, especially not after Year 1.   It made sense to draft a possible replacement in the case that Brady retired.  You can argue that Trask will never be a starting caliber QB.  If that turns out to be the case, then it was a bad pick because of the player, but not because of the position he played and the idea that he is sitting on the bench.  That's what QBs usually do.  We still have to find out about whether Trask can play in this league.  We'll find out a lot this offseason whether or not he beats out Mayfield.  Even if Mayfield beats him out you need a good backup QB in this league.  We were fortunate that in Brady's three years he was basically unscathed.  He beat the odds in that respect.
