Buccaneers Need to Make a Big Push for Bruce Carter by Jose Martinez Mar 9, 2015Bruce Carter tackling Arrelious Benn When NFL free agency officially starts on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have been pretty quiet so far, will look to spend some of their $25+ million in cap space. While it is expected for the Buccaneers to look at improving their offensive line and possibly acquiring a “top-tier” pass rusher and cornerback, let’s not forget that they will also need an inside linebacker. Preferably one that can gel perfectly into head coach Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 defense. With that in mind, outside linebacker Bruce Carter would switch over and be a great fit.•He’s youngAt only 27 years old, Carter would be another young player for the Buccaneers to build their linebacking corps around. Once the team (hopefully) locks up Lavonte David, Tampa will have two solid guys who can hold down the forte for years to come.•He’s a great asset in the Tampa 2 schemeLast season, Carter showed how valuable he can be in pass defense, snatching five interceptions. With the Tampa 2 dependent on a middle linebacker who can drop back into coverage, Carter’s sure-handedness could greatly help out in Lovie’s scheme with David and Lansanah more adept at getting tackles than picks.• He has the makings of the next Derrick BrooksDon’t shoot the messenger here. Over the last two seasons, Carter has had former Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin as his coach. He may already know the ins and outs of the Tampa 2, which further solidifies the D. Brooks comparisons.•He has some incredible speedCarter had a 4.39-second 40-yard dash time at North Carolina’s pro day. Need we say more?link
