Giants Will Allow Justin Tuck to Test Free Agency Sebastian Cosentino - Feb 22nd, 2014 at 4:41 pm Tuck_Zps471F3Ad7.JpgDec 29, 2013; East Rutherford, NJNew York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck (91) is helped off the field after an injury during the third quarter of a game against the Washington Redskins at MetLife Stadium. Tuck would return and the Giants defeated the Redskins 20-6. Brad Penner-USA TODAY SportsJustin Tuck is coming off a team high 11 sacks in 2013, but General Manager Jerry Reese was not too emphatic on keeping the defensive end during a press conference held Saturday morning. “Justin is going to go to the market and see what’s out there for him,” Reese told reporters. “I had talks with all those [prospective free agents]. Free agency means free agency. It means you go out and get as much as you can. “I’m all for players getting as much as they can. Justin deserves to see what the market is. We’d love to have him back. We’ll see where it goes.” Considering that more than half of his sack total came in two games against Washington and another two sacks came against the Chargers — who had one of the worst offensive lines in the league last season — Reese does not seem to think that his 11 sack season was that impressive. The last time Tuck recorded more than 5 sacks in one season was in 2010 when he accumulated 11.5, but 2010 seems like a distant memory here in 2014. Tuck’s agent self proclaimed here that ”Justin is by far the most complete d-end in the class,” Yeah, OKAY… “He obviously had an incredible season last year with every stat he had with the tackles, tackles for loss, the hurries and the sacks. They were up there with the upper-echelon defensive linemen.” Tuck’s agent seems to be under the impression that the veteran is a hell of a lot better than he actually is at this stage of his career, and he is going to want Tuck to be paid like it. This is something the Giants just simply cannot afford, even with $16 million in cap space. http://gmenhq.com/2014/02/22/justin-tuck-to-test-free-agency/

I'd like to get Tuck, but I don't think he's going to sign early. Like Abraham did last season, I think he's going to want too much and languish in FA for awhile and then sign somewhere April or May for a reasonable contract. I would love for that somewhere to be here.

Agree nitey.  I want Tuck even more then Hardy.  Don't want to pay either what they are probably worth though.  Justin gives a team so much flexibility.  He can play either end position in a 4-3 as well as slide inside on rush downs.  Not speculating he can do all those things, he's proven it against NFL offensive linemen.  If you sign Justin Tuck you really can go bpa when addressing the rest of your free agency and/or draft along the line.

Out of Bennett, Hardy, Tuck and Allen who do you feel has the most potential to take the money and mail it in?

I think Hardy is going to cost too much, same with Bennett. Not that we couldn't afford either, but Lecht just doesn't seem like the type of GM that's going to purchase from the top of the FA market too often. Like a lot of people here, I think he'll look for one or possibly two DE in the more affordable category. I think our targets will be Allen, Tuck, possibly Peppers, maybe Orakpo, maybe Lamarr Houston. Of those, I think Allen will be our preference, but whether Allen wants to come here is anyone's guess. But I think we have a good chance. If we pickup Allen, I think that diminishes our need for a edge rusher in the 1st round. However, if we end up with Tuck, I still think a edge rusher at #7 is still a possibility.

Actually, I don't think any of those 4 would do that. But age could catch up to Allen and Tuck and Tuck has always been a spotty edge rusher. I think Hardy WILL be a double digit sacker end next season and I'm leaning toward saying the same of Allen, with Bennett and Tuck - I see them more as 6 to 9 sack guys that play the run well and get pressures more than sacks.

Tuck, like Bennett, is a DE but does most of his pass rush damage as a DT.  Neither really brings edge rush we want.

I think that first sentence is more true for Tuck then Bennett.  Still though, I have a lingering feeling that Clayborn is a better RE then LE and finding an every down LE would be optimal for our current roster (if we're signing an older veteran end).  Now, I'll take a stud pass rushing RE (because I don't think Adrian will ever be a game changer rushing the QB from the right side) for sure.  So if we're going to draft an end, draft the best one you can get side be damned.

I read somewhere this morning, the Raiders are going to tag Lamar Houston.
