Not sure if this was something raised at the time but holy crap, how does that actually happen in a coaching search?Offensive minded, lots of flare, uber-successful at a big school players coach to defensive minded, boring as bricks, mediocre success at a bad football school disciplinarianThe two couldn't have been more different and were the two people we pinned for the job two years ago. I just don't understand how that happens. To me it just goes to show how uninvolved the owners are, and how this team really has had no general direction in what seems like forever.I have been one of the few people not ready to call for Schiano's head and I think Mike Glennon could be a good player down the line but a large part of me wants to see New Orleans take it to us and send Greg back to some middle of the road college program and continue being mediocre there. I want something exciting, because this isn't that.

100% agree, it's like the glazer's looked for the complete opposite of Kelly after he declined. We go from almost hiring one of the best offensive minds in football to probably the worst, conservative coach in the league.

The Glazers don't like "defensive minded" coaches IMVHO.  They blew away McKay's suggestions of Lewis and went all in with Gruden.  They were close to landing Kelly but they had to settle for Dom's pick (another defensive coach).  Dominik's mentors went the defensive coach route (eg Angelo hired Lovie).

of course now we can second guess the decision but had Schiano went to another team and turned into a Jim Harbaugh from SF then you would be second guessing that too smh

It's not about the names or successes. It's about the fact that we picked two coaches who have nothing in common as far as scheme and attitude go. Just shows there wasn't a plan.

It's been said the Glazers put a lot of weight into the recommendation they got for Schiano from Bill Belichick. I recall in the year or so prior to the Kelly non-hire and subsequent hiring of Schiano, one of the biggest proponents for Kelly was Tony Dungy. You're not going to make any sort of unifying connection between the styles of Kelly and Schiano, so if I had to guess how the Glazers went from one to another, I'd say they reached out to people they respected for recommendations and one said Kelly and the other said Schiano.

oh i see what you mean.. they went from a free spirited loose guy  to a toes on the line type of guy. i like Schiano and all but he should let the offense run their game plan and for him to just worry about the D and forsee  the entire team

Good question, imo. Very different aside from being college hc's. Not to screw up the conversation, but Schiano himself said that around league Bucs were seen as a laughing stock. Our last hc search took a long time.  Maybe after losing Kelly we had few options.

Wonder what the draft would have looked like with Kelly?  Russel Wilson looks like he was tailor made to be in Chip's offense.  Would he have been a Buc?  Was coaching up Freeman the sticking point with ownership?  Lots of questions with answers we'll never know.

Sure wish Chip had taken the Bucs job offer. The structure of the offense and plays, should, by nature, get  receivers open.It makes for exciting football.Gruden had that excitement in his offense.Bucs are dull.  Runs in the middle---Check down passes mixed with a long throw down the sidelines. In the championship game in 2002,  we broke the Eagles with a crossing pattern and did well with crossing route against the Raiders.Been a long time since we have seen true  crossing patterns. So defenses play man and our long passes have less chance of success. And the poor QB, open to assault, because he has take time to look and see  who is open, rather than already know who will be open.Dull, plodding minds lead to dull offenses.

What was it Gruden said he wanted to do, learn Oregon's offense? By John Hunt, The Oregonian on April 09, 2009Former NFL coach Jon Gruden paid a visit to Eugene recently to spend some X's and O's time with new Oregon coach Chip Kelly. It turns out, there was more to it.According to this report, Kelly offered Gruden the position of offensive coordinator.Kelly confirmed that he did make the offer, which Gruden declined. According to a story in the Orlando Sentinel two months ago, Gruden said he wants to learn as much about the spread offense as possible and use it in a return to the NFL."

Interesting question but you forgot two things. 1. Schiano was a last minute selection. 2. Many coaches were interviewed here but none wanted to take the job for some odd reason.

Gruden had that excitement in his offense.

What excitement? Three yard crossing patterns the entire game? Gruden was exciting but his offenses were boring as hell. How soon we forget. Last year's offense under Schiano blew away any offense Gruden ever had with the Bucs in scoring and points. We were ranked 9th last year. When did Gruden ever sniff the top 10 with the Bucs? He had the advantage of the best defense in the NFL giving his offense superb field position the whole game. I'm not saying there's anything exciting about the current Bucs offense but to put the Bucs offense under Gruden on that kind of pedestal is ridiculous.

I listened to a podcast at some point in which NFLosophy was discussing the hiring of Schiano. If I remember correctly he said something like - Kelly had already backed out and the Glazers/Dom knew that others were close to saying no, so the Schiano hire was a bit of a knee jerk reaction. Also said he believes it was more of a Glazer hire than a Dom hire. My opinion is that this team does not need a college coach. There is a lot of NFL experienced coaches that are/will be out there. Hell, even if Rex gets fired id prefer him. He may be loud obnoxious and annoying, but the current coaching staff makes him look like a genius.
