Breakout preseason for DL GholstonBy Roy Cummings | Tribune Staff Published: September 4, 2015 William GholstonMIAMI GARDENS — If there’s any such thing as a breakout preseason, Bucs DL William Gholston might be having it.A fourth-round pick of the Bucs in 2013, Gholston went into the preseason finale with the second-most tackles on the team (11), three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. The Bucs have long thought Gholston possesses the physical ability to be an impact player, and DT Gerald McCoy believes he’s proving it now that he’s just playing the game instead of thinking so much.“Eliminating thinking allows you to play fast, and that’s what he’s doing,” McCoy said. “He’s more relaxed out there. He’s not worried about making mistakes. He’s just going.“Our line coach (Joe Cullen) told him, ‘If you get off the ball, you’ll clean him up. Just get off the ball.’ And now that (Cullen) has his technique right, it’s working for Will.”End to endDT Henry Melton didn’t start the Bucs’ final preseason game against the Dolphins on Thursday, but he did start each of the previous two preseason games at left defensive end.Don’t be surprised if you continue to see Melton get work at left end come the start of the regular season. The Bucs have discussed the possibility of using Melton as a run-stopper at left end on first and second downs before moving him back inside to tackle for passing downs.“We know he has that capability, and we’ll see as we go,” Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said of the plan.“Nothing is conclusive at this point. We just wanted to be able to take a look at him out there and see how he moved around. He’s done it before and he’s done a good job there. He’s a very savvy guy who has real athletic ability and he understands the game well, so he’s given us another option.”HamstrungRookie WR Kenny Bell, who has been out for a week now with a sore hamstring, was hoping to play Thursday night. Smith was having nothing to do with that.“Kenny hurt his hamstring Friday,” head coach Lovie Smith said.“You don’t come back from hamstring injuries that quick. It’s good that he wants to do that and I’m sure that the pain is gone, but he’s not quite ready yet.”Roy Cummings
