As we all know, turnovers have been a killer for us this season. Turnovers are bad for a number of reasons. They take the ball out of the hands of the offense, the defense stays on the field longer, and it usually gives the opposing offense a shorter field to work with resulting in points or results in points before the defense even has a chance to get on the field. I went ahead and looked at some turnover statistics and compared them with the rest of the league. Here's what I found below:- We're 2nd in the NFL with the most turnovers given away with 10 and rank 2nd in most points scored against as a result of our own turnovers with 48. - Like I said above, 48 of the 117 points we have given up this year have came off turnovers. That is OVER 40% of the points we have given up. - The defense actually ranks in the top half of the league with 6 turnovers forced, as well as points scored off of turnovers with 22. What does this tell me? This confirms my thought that the defense has not been as bad as many people around think and they have played well enough to win in 3 of the 4 games this season. I know with a rookie QB who is known as a gunslinger this is expected and it is going to be hard to avoid the turnovers, but let's hope that Winston can get smarter with the football soon and Koetter can design some easier and safer reads for him so he isn't forcing it too much.Oh yea, and for anyone interested in these numbers, you can check them out at the following links: http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/team-net-turnover-points-statistics/2015/ http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/team-turnover-differential-statistics/2015/
