After the disaster with Raheem Morris and the disappointment of Greg Schiano, me thinks the Glazers wanted to stop the bleeding first and foremost. Lovie was the "safe" choice; fan-friendly to the Bucs fans, been to a Super Bowl as a HC, etc etc... Personally, I didn't see ANY "perfect" slam dunk choices out there...    I think Lovie is smart enough to see his offense in Chicago was mediocre, and hiring Tedford shows me he's trying something new (for him) and innovative. I LIKE the sign at least he's trying to be a bit more BOLD on offense.  ;D

Mediocre would have been a dramatic improvement for his offense in Chicago, it was awful, there's no other word for it.When only 1 other team had a worse offense over that 9 year period he was coach it's scary. As far as Tedford goes, hopefully it works but remember, this is a coach that hired Martz because of his history with the Greatest Show on Turf and that was a flop.I think the offensive failings were more down to Lovie's core beliefs than the coordinators/talent he had, those types of things can be very hard to go against.

"I think Lovie is smart enough to see his offense in Chicago was mediocre"Mediocre means average. In nine years, his offense reached average one time. The other eight years, it was well below that.

I don't say this JUST for the comic relief - as I could not stand Mike Shula's play calling - but Jeff Tedford is quite possibly the best Mike Shula impersonator on the planet...except Shula reversed the order and coached in the NFL prior to joining the college team that would later fire him.

As usual, White Tiger has no idea what he's talking about. SB Nation does have a Cal blog and I found it much more interesting (especially the comments in this article) then that one mid-fan hate. http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2014/1/1/5264846/bucs-to-hire-lovie-smith-tedford-oc It looks like the truth of the matter is Tedford was great when he could recruit decent QBs...apparently the QB well dried up in 2008 which led to his downfall at Cal. Give him a solid QB, his offense can do wonderful things. I guess that's with any coordinator. For the record, Glennon may be a good fit.

Heresay - I mostly know what I'm talking about - usually I just can't figure out what point you're trying to make. You don't like using stats (or...facts as I like to say).

umm...if I ban the name Aaron Rodgers...can you name a few, one, any of those "decent" QB's...that performed "wunnerful thingz"?'cuz the list I got says Kyle Boller, Trent Dilfer, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, and David Carr - ALL termed BUSTS in the NFL.and for those who like to read NON-propaganda news on Jeff Tedford (i.e., a balanced look at the knock on Tedfords system QB's - when he was NOT being considered for an NFL job...): http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft05/columns/story?id=2039797 Nice try though.

I don't know but it's hard to have that kind of turnover of staff & players on offense and it to suck so much every time for it to be anything other than the head guy dictating he wants something that ultimately results in such poor output. It won't have been his goal to hogtie the offensive side but that's what happened.I mean 1 or 3 coordinators, yeah it could be them, once you start hitting 3 or 4 the issue is generally higher on the totem pole.It was meant to be QB holding them back, they improved the quality of QB and the results still stank. They had multiple RBs go through that roster who performed well in Benson, Jones, Forte and the offense never got going. They tried getting wideouts multiple times and nothing changed. They drafted/signed so many line men during his tenure and it didn't work. They threw so much at the offense for so long and it never worked, there was 1 constant through it all, Lovie.

Can you name the number of National Championships that Jeff Tedford won with his system...even WITH Aaron Rodgers?

Not to put it mildly but Cal has so many limitations in recruiting that they likely won't win national titles. Unlike the overgrown Jucos of the SEC and any of the Florida state schools the kids have to be able to read to get in. What he accomplished in college is outstanding and since I can sit here and name about a dozen Cal plays who are in the NFL and good that isn't  a bad thing. Name another school who has names leap off the top of your mind. My concern is really around the lack of NFL experience and handling the complexity of defensive schemes.

I can understand the reservations regarding Tedford simply because he hasn't done anything at the pro level.  But this guy is a highly regarding offensive mind, much like Kelly was.  I think some of your criticisms are a little off base.  This guy has all of the qualifications to be an OC in the NFL.  Now it's up to him to prove it.FRG used Atlanta's Dirk Koetter as a guy who has a similar coaching background as Tedford that has succeeded in the NFL.  I'd argue Tedford has an even better resume than that.Nice to see you back, WT.
