Not to put it mildly but Cal has so many limitations in recruiting that they likely won't win national titles. Unlike the overgrown Jucos of the SEC and any of the Florida state schools the kids have to be able to read to get in. What he accomplished in college is outstanding and since I can sit here and name about a dozen Cal plays who are in the NFL and good that isn't a bad thing. Name another school who has names leap off the top of your mind.
Don't Oregon and Cal play in the same conference, recruit the same guys? What Kelly pulled off in Oregon is amazing - what Tedford did at Cal makes me wonder why either of the two parties kept putting up with medicrity?
My concern is really around the lack of NFL experience and handling the complexity of defensive schemes.
The offense is supposed to be complex, and took college QB's 2-1/2 years to master - to put a finer point on your concer: we will either have a guy one year removed from learning a stripped down NFL offense, or selecting another rookie QB who likely won't have a lot of experience reading complex defenses - while having to learn what is being reported as a very complex offense - which kinda indicates to me that by the time our QQB masters the new offense, we'll be looking at year two of their development...and not a lot of success. ...and i'm thinking that's not why the Glazers went with Lovie Smith...
White tiger - can you name any qbs that chip Kelly groomed who did great things at the nfl level?
Can you name the number of National Championships that Jeff Tedford won with his system...even WITH Aaron Rodgers?
Sure, the same number as Chip Kelly.
OK Biggsy - to satisffy your need for accuracy (in other peoples posts): How many National Championship games did Jeff tedford SNIFF?One of these things is not like the other...Cal's bowl games under Tedford:2003 - Insight Bowl2004 - Holiday2005 - Las Vegas2006 - Holiday2007 - Armed Forces2008 - Emerald2009 - Poinsettia2011 - HolidayOregon's bowl games under Kelly:2010 - Rose Bowl2011 - BCS National Championship2012 - Rose Bowl2013 - Fiesta Bowl
This is an argument that not only borders on stupidity but sneaks across the border and takes up residence. Using this "logic" Les Miles would be a great NFL coach because he has win NFL titles and been to a lot of BCS games.

Cal has much higher academic standards than Oregon. Cal is pulling from a subset of the possible recruits for Oregon. Plus, they actually expect people to go to class something that Oregon doesn't really do either. Tedford's plays will be fine in terms of routes and combos. What kills college coaches is the line play and protections that have to be put in. I am more concerned about that than anything else. I hope that a veteran like Sparano can help with that and also that Lovie has been working with Tedford for awhile now basically prepping him for how NFL defenses work.

I can understand the reservations regarding Tedford simply because he hasn't done anything at the pro level. But this guy is a highly regarding offensive mind, much like Kelly was. I think some of your criticisms are a little off base. This guy has all of the qualifications to be an OC in the NFL. Now it's up to him to prove it.FRG used Atlanta's Dirk Koetter as a guy who has a similar coaching background as Tedford that has succeeded in the NFL. I'd argue Tedford has an even better resume than that.Nice to see you back, WT.
Thanks Biggs - I simply was underwhelmed with the Tedford selection - there were better candidates for OC with NFL experience. Despite what I heard from our head coach that he's had an epiphany (of sorts) regarding offensive philosophy - yet the DC does have NFL experience, while the offense has the confidence you get from a mediocre college coach. The entire coachinng change went from opportunity to ordeal - even though the DC has NFL experience, he too is an example of "settling"..it appears (to me) that Lovie wanted a specific someone (Marinelli), but the owners didn't have the horse-power or commitment to get the man their brand new head coach said he needed - so he's already begun settling.. The owners are also forcing me to decide to settle - while I don't have to settle - as I can always drift back to running 9 routes in the dark....and wish the owners good luck selling mediocrity without even a discount on ticket pricing for their incompetence - but I love my Bucs...so, I'm angry and frustrated, once again AFTER they hired the new head coach...The more this plays out - the more it looks like desperation by the owners.

"according to a source, the Buccaneers haven't reached out to the Cowboys seeking permission to interview Marinelli about becoming the defensive coordinator. Settling ? Have you been paying attention at all this offseason ?
Settling ??? who was your dream team ? Last year it was they took to long, now to quickSeveral teams wanted Lovie and his crew. IMHO Great job
I was against the last "Bold" move to hire a mediocre college coach.I'd like to think that being a fan of the Buccaneer franchise since 1979 has allowed me enough misery to be able to spot mediocrity, early. So, yeah, I'm familiar with it. Unfortunately, I may be one of only a few in Tampa that do NOT consider it an improvement to go from awful, to mediocre.
No offense but you are being a d0uche bag right now.

No offense, but you need to put down the kool aid.

So you think that because we didn't sign Marinelli - Lovie didn't want him? If Lovie wanted him and the owners didn't reach out, it would seem to send an interesting message, wouldn't you think? If you're in bad shape - and you don't know football well enough to fix the problems - you don't hire the coach first. However, if you've demonstrated an historical level of incompetence when conducting coaching searches: i.e., iring Dungy without actually having your target coach - Parcells - under contract. Racing to be turned down by Ralph Freidgen, then Steve Marriucci, before finally trading/buying Jon Gruden...then firing Gruden to hire your own position coach to replace him, but never giving that coach any access to talent in free agency, and allowing that position coach to hire an OC and DC so bad that one was fired BEFORE his first game and the other was fired before the END of the first season - and your fire him to hire a coach no one heard of of, nor cared about, and was only on the radar of Penn State...So pardon me if I'm raining on your parade - but this smells a lot like the last 4 coaching decisions.
Not kool aid drinking at all. Your "settling" argument is ridiculously wrong as I already showed. Lovie's coordinators were on board before he even signed with us and those are the guys he got. But you are ignoring this because it doesn't fit your narrativeYou are just being negative for the sake of being negative. Quit your whining.

Recruiting? Oregon? Amazing?.....does the name Phil Knight ring a bell? Think he might have a tad bit to do with it?
Hey, let's not get hasty...I am no Chip Kelly fan...but if you don't think Cal has benefactors that pay the tab....

Northwestern and Vandy have similar reputations for academics first - neither of them held onto great coaches for 10 years. Each time a coach did well at one of those schools - their coach was poached - they're like farm clubs. They pull up the graduation rates and GPA for the conference, every few years they manage to hire a great coach who assembles just enough talent to threaten the conference power teams.Stanford is also considered to be one of those places.Stanford played in the Rose Bowl this year and that's after most their coaching staff left for the NFL, Vandy's coach James Franklin is about to snag a better deal, Baylor's coach is checking out another school - and even places like Bowling Green and Utah have to replace their coaches every couple of years. How is it this gem of a coach lasted for 10 years, in one spot, and dwelt in relative obscurity?Sorry, I'm not buying it.
