I just don't see the clear upgrade over Glennon worth spending that high a pick on. If he falls in the 1st and we trade back up for him, I'm fine with that, but for the exact reason that we hopefully won't be drafting this high again soon we need to come away with a star.
Carr gets an inordinate amount of hate because he had a bad bowl game and his last name. People overrated any single game, see Jamarcus Russell, and assign him traits from his brother. He has all the skills you need. He needs to clean up his footwork but I think you can say that about every QB this year and almost all of them in any year. Colleges are awful at footwork.
Dal,How would you compare/grade him against Garrapolo?
Similar players to be. Size and build are the same. Both are athletic but not super crazy guys like a Kaepernick. I'd compare them more to a Rodgers level player in terms of mobility. Garropolo has a faster release, Carr has better velocity. I like ball placement and accuracy from both guys. I've seen whole games of Carr and have only seen highlight of Jimmy G so it is hard to say since I could cut up highlights to make anyone look good. I think they are similar in a lot of ways.
With all that, would you use 7 on Carr...or make a trade (if possible) and trade down for more picks and grab Garrapolo in the second half of round 1?Thanks for the info
I want to see both at the senior bowl week and how they do. Both guys had terrific first days but it will be the sum of the their efforts over the week. The game is usually trash from the QB point of view as very few guys look good there. The simple fact is if you grade a player as a franchise QB then all of this where to take him is irrelevant, that is the most valuable asset you have so yes you take them at seven.

I believe both guys are playing on the South team, so they will be throwing to the same receivers during practice. It should be easier to compare the two with them being on the same team.
I love how everyone says not at 7!, Chris Ponder went top 10 for crying out loud lol, if a team views someone as their guy they are going to take him. Carr already is a top 20 pick, if he has a good week and combine he is definitely going top 10. Teams want to see him throw more than what Fresno St. limited him to. He is athletic and has a cannon of an arm and has a quick release. He does fit Tedfords offense and if you ask me is not the same as Glennon at all. Word from yesterdays practice is he was easily the best qb prospect out of his group including Jimmy G. If Tedford wants him I have no problem with it and trust this regime with finding their guy over any decision the last regime made.
This is an excerpt from a site I read (and subscribe to) about Carr... I cannot say I disagree... Does this sound like he'll succeed in a Tedford offense?"...It's a rather nuanced thing scouting Derek Carr. At first glance, you see a confident, polished QB. Watch enough tape, and you'll throw-up if you see another no-read, quick pass bubble screen to a WR. Fresno State runs a savvy, fast-tempo run & shoot--and Carr runs it well. What they aren't doing well is traditionally dropping back and picking strong defenses apart. Time and time again, when Carr is forced to go over the middle, or work against tight coverage, I would see him erratic and ineffective. Where he is at his best is pre-designed, quick-release bubble screens to WRs with blockers setting up in front of the receiver--extended hand-offs to his WRs. There is no meticulous reading of the defense--just a lot quick passes, and letting the WR do a lot of the statisitcal work. Carr's skills are NFL-worthy to a degree--quick-release, strong enough arm, smart/quick decision maker when the play is pre-designed. However, you cannot get by on that in the NFL long-term. You can limp along with it for a while, but eventually you will have to challenge the middle--and I do not see evidence of Carr being able to do that with success at the NFL level...."

And that was a great pick.
I don't see his release being that much faster than Glennon's either.Again. IMO if the Bucs really like Carr or Garoppolo I say trade to the end of the 1st to get them locked in for the next 5 years and give them some time to develop, but top 20 you are just passing on too many playmakers.
Jason Campbell would be a good fit for someone who gets by in the NFL long-term...
I have to agree BB...Trade back into the mid 20's... pick up a couple extra picks. Get Garoppolo or get a WR or DE at 7. Play the cards as they come...
My point has nothing to do with Ponder being good, the point is if a team wants someone they can care less what some fans are saying on a message board.
How can we get Garoppolo or WR or DE at 7 if we traded back into the mid-20s?
Re-read my post.Trade back into the mid 20's pick up a couple extra picks - Get JG.... OR get a WR/DE at 7 and play the cards.(Sorry wasn't real clear.)
oh, sorry. Seemed like you were saying to do both. My mistake. I say it is Watkins at 7 or trade back multiple times. There are SO many 2nd round prospects that I am in love with. Aaron Donald, Zach Martin, Brandin Cooks, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, Garroppolo, Cyril Richardson (despite being owned)...
Yo man. This crazy talk be exactly how bad teams stay bad. They be reaching for needs in the draft and we cant afford to that here man. If we want to trade back for Carr then maybe we can have this conversation but saying we should take him at 7 is stupid man. And consider the source man. The Marky Mark Report said we should sign Freeman and Dominick to contract extensions before last season began. I agree that Jimmy G would be better pick than Carr at 7.
