I think it comes down to 2 scenarios:Draft to replace Penn nowDraft to replace Penn in a year or 2's timeIf we are drafting to replace Penn now then Robinson, if we are keeping Penn for a year or longer then Matthews as we can make use of him as a G until Penn goes.
But let's say it's Joseph and not Nicks that is out. You gonna put him at RG and hope eventually he's your LT?
Or do you make Matthews your RT and move Dotson to RG? Or do we go double Oline and get a G in the second round? If we don't get rid of Penn immediately you'd want to get some use from Matthews until we do, if he's the great technician that folks think he is he should flourish in any task he's asked to do, but he maybe better off being the reserve tackle for a year and getting some playing time under his belt before becoming a starter.
I'd like that option.
I'd prefer Greg Robinson over Jake Matthews but Robinson will go at #6 to St. Louis when Atlanta trades for the #2 to get Clowney. They need to address LT in free agency and take the best player available at #7 . . .I'm hoping that it's Khalil Mack.

Yes I think that's very possible. I also see the Rams taking Lee later to put opposite Austin. So Austin, three QBs, Clowney and Robinson. Makes Mack a no-brainer.
I meant Watkins before. 7
id be happy with either or even lewan. they all look to be solid players.the shefter comment was interesting. probably looking into it too much but didnt larry allen spend most of his career at guard?
Mathews wasn't on par athletically with Robinson and Lewan but he was still much better than anticipated. He definitely showed he can play left tackle. Just because he's not a freak like the other two doesn't mean he's not a good athlete. I think Lewan put himself in the conversation for the top 10 though. The knock on him was athleticism and he put that to bed.

i thought he was a guard as well...........................
Allen was a freak who played guard but he also kicked out when needed to LOT. I don't think they were talking about positionally reminding them of Allen just that Allen and Robinson are both freakish mixes of size, speed and strength,
Matthews is a lock. I feel Taylor Lewan is the other franchise LT. Robinson IMO has some flaws in his technique and has had a penchant for holding. Some say that can be coached up. Michigan has a long history of producing quality OL for the NFL. Lets not select another Kenyatta Walker when you can draft a Steve Hutchinson or a Jeff Backus type player.

to say he has a penchant for holding is an understatement. ive never seen a team get away with more holding than Auburn did last seasongo watch him in the National Title game. Mario Edwards gave him all kinds of trouble in that game and blew his ass up several times. Robinson got away with several blatant holds when he got beat bad. hes a great physical talent but i think hes gotten overrated in the recent months. hes first round talent but hes got a lot of things he needs to work onHigher Upside - Greg RobinsonHigher Floor - Jake MatthewsSafer Pick - Jake MatthewsHigher Bust potential - Greg RobinsonBetter Technique - Jake MatthewsMore Power - Greg Robinsonits all about what you want. do you want a guy you can develop or do you want a good day 1 starter
I was very high on Lewan last year and thought if he came out he would be up there with the top LTs in the draft. Not sure what happened to him in 2013, but if it werent for Clowney's severe lack of production this year, that spotlight would have been on Lewan.
I'd rather have Robinson... I'm just picturing him in our screen game, charging down field and destroying everything in his path.
Mathews is definitely a safer pick. OL men usually need to be pretty smart and Robinson doesn't come across as the brightest bulb. But his upside is definitely higher.
