I know most people assume that we are not going to be in play for this guy, especially because we paid Dashon Goldson last year, but for a few reasons I think he is a good fit. First and foremost, his Dad is on our coaching staff. Second the way that Goldson's contract is structured this is his last year of guaranteed money from the Bucs, and if the Bucs were to pay him a $3 million dollar roster bonus he would become a trade-able player because he would only have the $6 million dollars left from this years salary guaranteed on his contract. Everyone watched the Superbowl this year. We need that type of Safety and secondary play, and we may be very close to it. Goldson could improve this year if he cuts out the ill timed hits, and if he takes to the system. But why deal with the "ifs"? For $3 million more dollars, give Byrd Goldson's contract, pay Goldson's roster bonus, and trade Goldson out of here.

Looking at it more I'm off on the Guaranteed #'s. Yea, Goldson's contract is difficult to move at the moment, be it via trade or cutting.  In a perfect world it would be great to be able to make this move on Byrd, but with the other deficiencies on the team, I wouldnt expect much to happen along these lines.  Best bet is to hope Lovie/Frazier can work on Goldson.  I dont think its out of the realm of possibility to expect him to return to his SF playing form now that we have some NFL coaches.

Yup. There would be a night and day difference, but this is highly unlikely. I would be willing to say that Goldson has the wool pulled over the eyes of quite a few people in this organization, similar to the way Davin has for so long. There most likely are quite a few people who feel he is a good player simply based on the reputation that was built while he was with the 9ers, so that will also help to keep him around...unfortunately.

I think he is a much better player than Davin, but I see where you are going.  He didnt go to back to back pro bowls based on his contract/rep, like Davin.  Now, I am hoping that he gets back to the form he was playing at in SF.  That does mean he will still get some penalties and get burnt in coverage sometimes...but if he can play the way he did in SF, we will be fine on the back end.

I dont think he played all that great in SF, to be honest. They had consistent and constant pass rush during most of his time as a starter, and had 4 all pro players playing in front of him as well as great situational players and solid DBs playing along side him. Because of this, he wasn't counted on heavily to be a playmaker or a shut down type of guy. He was pretty much allowed to roam around freely, which resulted in a few of the big time hits he was known for. Also, the defense was good enough to mask quite a few of his errors. He was pretty much the same player in '13 that he has always been. The reasons why it looked like a major drop off is becuase he played for a defense that could not get much pressure and the DC was chopped full of ineptitude, his stubbornness regarding adapting to the current hittingpolicies of the NFL, and becuase he was counted on being a solid coverage safety...something that he never really was in SF.

I would be willing to bet that there are several people on the defensive staff/FO who hold Goldson in high regards(overrate him) because of the accolades/reputation that he acquired while in SF.

Even if we were able to trade Goldson, Byrd still doesn't make sense. The Bucs salary structure does not work, with already 2 players in the top 25, both of them non quarterbacks. Byrd would make it 3, all of them top 10 in non-QB cap hits. Bad economics.

We will surely find out this season.  I think he could return to SF form with something resembling decent coaching.

1. You are assuming Byrd gets a top 25 salary.2. If the structure does not work (according to you), then it doesnt matter what positions are getting paid if you have 2 in the top 25, QB or not.3. At the moment, the Bucs only have 1 in the top 25.Both the Lions and Cowboys have 2 in the top 25, with one of them being their QB. Seems to have worked well for them.

1. You are assuming Byrd gets a top 25 salary.

That's an absolute certainty.

Not really sure what you're trying to say here. Two players in the top 25 is reckless, but I can understand if one of them is a QB. Both being non QBs is dumb and is Dominik in a nutshell.

3. At the moment, the Bucs only have 1 in the top 25.

Revis is #17 and McCoy is #21 http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/nfl/cap-hit/

Both the Lions and Cowboys have 2 in the top 25, with one of them being their QB. Seems to have worked well for them.

Yea the Lions and Cowboys are the envy of the league.

No...on #1 you are guessing.  Is there a chance, yes.  Is it an "absolute certainty"? Not at all.  He would have to get paid more than $14.8 mil to even crack the list (as it stands today for 2014) and that is far from certain.#2.  I am saying you can have 2 of the top 25 and them not being QBs and still make it work.  I was showing that just because you have that does not equate to success.  #3.  At the moment we are still in the 2013 NFL fiscal year, so McCoy does not make the top 25 at the moment.  Revis is the only one there at the moment and a lot could happen between now and when the season starts.

By the way, Jackson is at #33 with quite a few guys in front of him who are getting released or will have their number chopped down. We would actually be pushing 4 in the top 25. All non QBs. Stop guys... Christmas in March is over. You had your taste of being the Redskins and it bombed like everyone with a brain knew it would.
